  • Join me at my deep woods debris shelter for a solo overnight! If you've ever wanted to try camping alone in the woods, stay with me to experience what it's like, how to handle the dark, how to react to your mind wanting to go down the rabbit hole, and my philosophy on what it takes to camp alone in the woods. In the morning, I finish up with an epic breakfast while the daylight returns.

That is the reason that I carry one when alone, camping. I, too, was raised with guns. As you said, humans are the animals to beware of. And being alone in the woods is a place where you need to be able to defend yourself on the off chance some nut (or pushy drunk) shows up. Having dogs along serves about the same purpose.

I dunno, baboons in South Africa can be pretty evil. Cougars and mountain lions want to eat you. And polar bears just think you’re walking hamburger. So while that’s 85% accurate it’s not quite true that animals just want your food. Some animals do want to mess you up

I was 19 yrs old when I slept alone in a rickety shelter which leaked on me in the night. It was May 3rd, with sleet and snow falling. I heard a noise at night, scratching near my shelter. I was scared stiff, and kept huddled in my sleeping bag, hoping it didn't eat me in the night. I imagined huge claws that would tear me apart if I left the shelter. Come morning, as soon as I saw faint dawn light, I went outside and started a fire for tea and warm up. As the fire burned, I heard that scratching noise again, but when I looked over my nervous shoulder, there it was! A squirrel was digging in the leaves. Talk about glad I was alone, so no one could laugh at me but myself. Very pleasant discussion on your part. You're the elder woman of the bushcraft tribe. You have wisdom, humour and pleasant teaching. Good job!

I have a tip for you and the shelter: clear heavy plastic sheeting, instead of a canvas tarp to cover the entrance. It creates a green house effect inside the shelter keeping it warm with the fire, and allows you to see the fire (comforting) and the front area of your camp. Though it blocks out the wind, it allows light and heat from the fire to warm your shelter. You won't be blowing frost anymore going to bed, I promise you. It can actually get hot inside.

    - We -
    We stand alone
    On shores of stone
    To greet the morning sky,
    We splash in waves
    On rainy days
    As watchers wonder why;
    We smile at air
    When no one's there
And slow dance just for fun,
    We share our feats
    In Twitter tweets
    To the evening sun;
    By dark of night
    And candlelight
    We rest our souls awhile,
    Though weary we
    And windswept be
The dawn will see us smile.

When I was like 12 years old me and my dad were members of a sportsman club, and they had an ox roast. When me and my dad arrived I was looking for the ox and where it was to be cooked. I then asked about where the ox roast will be taking place. He then told me, that I am standing on it. I was like saying what? It turned out they made hot coals in a hole dug out by a back hoe and, wrapped packs of the ox like bricks and buried it. I was amazed! Later they undug it, and we ate. The taste was amazing! It may be fun to see you do the same thing but on a small scale.

Good for you for carrying when you're alone in the woods. One little piece of advice - if you're going to carry that firearm, put it in a holster and keep it on you, loaded, with the safety on. And take time in the range to learn to draw, take the safety off, and shoot accurately. Sometimes things develop too quickly to have the time to look for where you put the gun - you need to have it to hand. I hope you never need it - and I'm glad you have it! Stay safe, friend.

On the firearm, I'm totally with you. To those who question it, I tell them, it's not the odds (of an incident), it's the stakes. I wear my seatbelt in the car for the same reason. Not expecting to have an accident, it's the stakes if I do. Personally, I carry at all times where it's legal. I'd get the permit; then you have more options. You can carry open or concealed. I use The Wilderness SafePacker holster when I'm backpacking or day hiking. I sling it over head and shoulder, then put on the backpack. That way it's always attached to my body when I put the pack down. Love your channel and all the stories and tips! You and BushRadical are the best! OMG I'd go camping with you in a heartbeat! I've been going backpacking and camping solo for three decades, and I've never let being female stop me. Like you, I've had more concern about the humans I run into than the wildlife. When a black bear walked into camp while I was making dinner because it's May and he's STARVING, I put the fire between us and made lots of noise and yelled at him like some badger he'd better not mess with! "You can't have my dinner, dude! That's a good way to get yourself shot!" He gave it up and moved on, though I'll admit I was glad of the truck at hand that night on that trip, and I slept in the back under the canopy. But I've carried bear spray for all these years and have yet to need it (knock on wood!) Love the video!

She’s awesome - I went alone and the anxiety levels were through the roof !! I drove and camped different spots for about a week but I never really relaxed, I probably wasn’t bored enough. Of course I was trying to work into a system that worked for me for camping, so my mind was too busy, probably needed another week to really enjoy it. A few things I learned 1. Dont wait until I’m tired to make up my bed- bad idea to get busy again when I really needed to switch off and get sleep. 2. Should have hydrated all day up until a few hours before bed. Nothing worse than dehydration when you’re exhausted but start drinking at that point, and half hour later you need to leave the sleeping bag to start bathroom trips. More exhausting. Then I slept in because of it all, and woke up in a hot tent cuz the sun was up for a few hours. Uh !! 3.) having an insulated air mattress kept me from a cold rocky uneven ground, it’s weird how that one rock is always under a hip when trying to sleep 4.Nothing is more normalizing than to feel clean like a shower . I have a. collapsible bucket, filled, let the sun warm it all day, then put in my hand shower / pump ... ahh

One thing to help keep your mind calm during a solo camp out is to know the sounds of the forest. Hearing the mellow call of the barred owl is enjoyable, but if you don't know the other sounds they are capable of it can put a person into near panic. Once you realize what you are hearing then the fear subsides, and you can then enjoy the experience. I think one of the most blood curdling sounds I've heard so far is that of a screeching barn owl. But again, once you know what it is, everything is cool. I also like to bring along my harmonica or my recorder. Both are very compact yet provide hours of musical enjoyment. Great video Brooke, you make us feel like we're out there with you. Thanks. Oh and hey, did Dave let you borrow his sweater? :)

I am a big scaredy cat afraid of everything and I'm not kidding on. I would not even sleep in the back yard in a tent. Brooke, you always amaze me with the things you do. Great stories and tips. I am not able to sleep on the ground like I use to and hubby and I are in one of those disgusting travel trailers (with a very quiet generator) that you hate and we LOVE it! Getting older for me is about comfort and letting go of the risks. I have had a long, interesting adventurous life and let that go for comfort and relaxation. No matter how we enjoy the great outdoors, it's really a beautiful thing to get out there and be in awe of Gods creation. BTW, our generator is so quiet that we always get people coming up to us asking what it is. It's a Yamaha 3000 generator and one of the best things we have purchased. Take care gurl. :0)

Thank you for your inspiration. Haven't been in the wilderness in years, but I always went solo. Sometimes just for a few days, sometimes for weeks. Always had an excellent time. Your words of advice, especially about the mind trip of being alone, are very important. Somehow when you're faced with the immediacy of surviving the night or surviving the trek, many things become less important, and you gain a perspective that only being alone in the wilderness can give you. Take care.

I am a European and am against carrying a gun when there is no apparent reason for the gun to be used.
But when a person, let alone a woman, wants to do a solo night out camping in the woods, I am expecting her to have a gun with her. I can't disagree with your need to protect yourself and I am very happy you are taking measures to ensure your safety. Your videos help me relax so much when I am stressed and I never got offended by your gun :D
Plus, having one that once belonged to your father, makes this so much more beautiful and meaningful.

Brooke, what an informative and well made video! You gave such wonderful advice. I've been solo camping for a few years now, and I'm still not totally comfortable out there at night. Everything you said about fire, shelter, and light rang true to me. And especially about not letting the strange sounds get to you. I don't have enough woods time yet to know all the night noises and the critters that make them. Gonna keep at it though, cuz like you said, awaking safe in the morning and watching the woods come alive is the big payoff. Thanks.

Thanks for the great video inspiring us to get out there alone with ease and the confidence that being prepared brings us. I like your thoughts about running through worst case scenarios and resolving them in your mind.
That must have been horrifying to hear something running toward your tent and such a relief to find out it was your dog! I once pitched my tent on a deer trail. I didn’t know it because I set up camp in the dark. In the middle of the night I heard something running toward my tent and I was barely breathing when I saw the shadow of a deer jumping right over my tent!
This solo overnighter must have been easy peasy compared to your time on Vancouver and Mongolia. Don’t think I could ever do that! I loved watching this video and found it especially inspiring to see how comfortable you are alone in the woods overnight.

Solo camping is interesting. I have camping buddies but I've done solo nearly or more. Sometimes the vibe is weird. I've driven sixty miles and just didn't feel right about it and have turned around and driven back. I have buddies who have done the same thing. There can be varying degrees of that feeling. I've had to choke down apprehension right at sundown and then enjoyed the whole thing. Most times it's just all fun.
I hate packing for any kind of trip and I've thought, why not just stay home and relax. About five mile out of town the sensation of freedom sweeps over me and I just go, YES, I'm outa here. You know it's going to be a great campout. We have snow in the hills tomorrow, I'm thinking about it....

Hello from Oklahoma! I've spent quite a few nights in the woods alone. One thing I try to take with me is something to write on. A lot of times I will come up with ideas while I'm sitting there by myself. Its good to write them down. Also, I take a knife or knives to carve with. There is an old saying my grandpa said to me long ago, "Control your mind or it will Control you." The fry bread looked pretty tasty. Enjoyed the video! Thanks! I binge watch cold weather, winter camping. It helps my depression and anxiety Soo much. It's something I REALLY want to do after watching for Soo MANY years.
We camped all the time as a family. Then I camped with my two Best friends in my 20s on overnights at the river.
    But Ive never Solo camped.
Humans is what I'm afraid of.
Biggest predator here in Oklahoma would be a bobcats in my region. I don't even own camping gear, but maybe go to garage sales and find stuff. I really wanna go this fall when it's cold. I think it will be Soo good for my mental health.

Really enjoyed this video, with so much great insight about camping alone. I liked hearing that alone story too, and the one about being out in nature as a kid, how that kind of shaped your future love of being outside. I have similar stories, of just being so inspired by the sounds of nature, the frogs in a bog, a meteor shower, the smells of the seasons, a long 26 mile hike I did in Maine when I was 12 was life changing experience for me. That fry bread, crrrrunch, looks really good.

Yes it is awesome! To get away alone from society in general once in a while. Being a yak packer myself.
I haven't been out in close to 2 yrs. Due to work then ran into back problems.
Just went out before x-mas and as soon as I hit that water and drifted a couple hundred feet to get to the other side of the river.
Flanked by the wilderness on both sides of me, brought a instant smile to my face. I said out loud.. this is just great!
      Automatically relieving stress.
Hearing the call of the wild and taking in what ever mother nature gives ya!
Been out twice within a month and doing another outing Sat.
Get out there Sidney and enjoy what you haven't done in a long time.
