Hi Harvey. Sorry to see your dads saw spit a piston but I guarantee he is looking down knowing his son is going to rebuild it into something very special. Have a great day everyone. Getting 4-8 inches of snow here in Maine today so I’ll be plowing tonight. Have a great day.
The memories of my Dad came flooding back watching this , gave me a knot in my throat big as a hickory stump . New sub here , can't wait to see the build .👍❤️👍
Upstate NY I'm in Rochester today the 16th rotten weather today, heading back to CT tomorrow hopefully good training. I cooked a 55 rancher 6 years ago felt terrible about it, my first power saw. Raw gas by accident grabbed the wrong can. Thanks for putting together this video.
I have an old 034 super that I have had about 23 years and I bought it used. Love that old saw and i use it to cut about 4-5 cord a year for my own use. when I first had it I cut 2 or 3 times that but have a better stove and insulation now. Just a great saw for me in central NY. Thanks for your fine video. I have picked up a bunch from Buckin's too.
Funny when you were out in that really pretty country with a really nice vintage machine, I was slugging it in the mud. WASN'T planning to do a video of that muddy time, did get a few. But maybe a contrast might be fun. Nice sunny up there......2ft of mud here. Cool saw..BTW
HaHa! That was the only dry place I could find! Deep mud here too! I have a strange mix of old and older saws! Would you believe I never ported any of my own saws untill I built that Stars and Stripes saw old Dave! It’s a 99cc 066 mag! I also am building a 372xp with case fed reeds using reeds from a kx80! Got to do a mod on the gas tank for room for the reeds! A saw with a hard hit! Hmmm!
Ironhorse...nice video of an old saw. Those Stihl's are work horses. Speaking of old saws; I have a Remington SL7 95CC saw (1970's vintage). I would like to keep this one running in the woods as well. I'm in search of either a clutch assembly or a pair of clutch shoes. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks... and keep the videos coming.
Beautiful blue skies. Running that saw brings back a lot of good memories. Them and that saw are something great to cherish. Im sure you ll fix that saw. Worth more than gold.
I had an 041 farm boss ! It was in great shape and low hour! It was a low end grunt runner and had to get rid of it because I was in a pinch ! Wish I had the ole girl back
I Harvey my first saw was a mini Mac McCulloch 1972 love that saw cut a lot of firewood with it my father and I back then had some acreage outside Belfast New York spent a lot of time there weekends. Still cutting firewood but with the 0 56 stihl but in northern Idaho now retired now love restoring old chainsaws as a hobby.
I just rebuilt an 041 farm boss as my first saw and I have to say I’m extremely impressed. I’ve ran a lot of new stihls and this old girl isn’t too far behind them.
Like you said Harvey, this will be a good thing in the end. When you're done with your dad's saw it'll be a workhorse again. My dad's first and only firewood saw was a 041. Between the two of us we cut with that saw for thirty years
I have a .045 super and a .056 super. Both have a Gazillion hours on them. Both still run fine. At least a lot better than I. Made my living running those stihls and have a real soft in my heart for them. They are a whole lot heavier than they use to be. I ran 25 to 1 oil mixture and cleaned air filters religiously. Have a great day and good luck with that .045.
I been learning from bucking Billy to growing up without a dad I learned the hard way most my life guys like bucking Billy and you are teaching me skills I'd never know thanks friend
I bought an old Stihl 045AV here in Bulgaria for less than 90 USD. At first I thought it was a non runner. The exhaust was rusty like a 20 years of sitting on shelf. But after some points cleaning and after I glued the fuel tank she appeared to be a real monster of power!
When I go to buy a saw, and the guy says it was my dad's, or even Grandpa. I like to ask em why not just keep the saw, pit it up on a shelf where you can see it. It'll bring back memories everytime you look at it. I've had a few guys say you know, that's a great idea. And most of the others, I have great stories that came with them. Love the ol Stihl 🧡 I expect it'll be up and cutting soon enough!! Have a great day Harvey!!!
Around about 1980 I went to visit my logger neighbour and he showed me his 045 Stihl; loved it so much I bought a 056 Super. Loved it. Great memories Harvey, God Bless
That’s was kinda sad to see, it was cutting good. Well you’ll make it right and I’m sure your Dad is looking down smiling. Nice Harvey, now bring the ole gal back to life. Awesome to see Thanks for that 👍✊
Mr. Harvey next time you ask me to hold the camera tell me standing next to you that's why I don't get sawdust in my eyes again actually it's not sawdust those are wood chips and it runs it's nice to see Dad off the shelf and going through some wood makes you almost done think about the olden days right listen to Pops somewhere else listen to his stall well that was kicking your butt at 17 have a good day sir as always love one another and everybody has a healthy happy life I'm a Michigan boy love you all good day be kind...
Old 45 was cutting better than some new saws my friends run. Sorry the top let loose but at least you have parts saved to rebuild it. Cant wait to hear it cutting again.
Me Ironhorse I know your dad would be pleased to see you using his saw and knowing that it means something to you love the axe and had a friend who worked at kelly axe in Charleston Wv for years have a great day look forward to next video
I started out buckin with an 045 for dad when I was 11 and half. I remember that thing feeling like it weighed 100 pounds at the end of the day back then.
Well it wasn't going to blow its self up at least you got him going and now you can fix him up proper and do your dad proud and you got some wood in before the weather comes in and no one got hurt so it was a good day.
Just found and subed looks like the right place for older saws,I have a old Homelite super xl that runs like a dream ,its a heavy thing and cuts everything you throw at it .
Good video Harvey. If that were me and trust me I don't know near what you do buddy, I would have made the fuel mix a tad richer and maybe fattened up the high side a bit to protect that old girl. Can't wait to see the rebuild. God Bless you and yours.
That's a good way to stay positive well we cook the piston blew it up will rebuild it some people would be pissed off throw it in the creek I think it's funny🤣remember 2 strokes are made to rebuild they last a long time but not forever👍👍
wished you had of drug ole $60 with you...that's my old saw I want to see cutting....sent many a truck load of saw logs with mine...built a couple of barns...and sold bunches for some extra cash...enjoyed the video though...Oh yeah, when I was 15 I bought me a brand new RM370 and wore it out...loved watching you ride yours....Good Day...
Having tricks to our old saws are half the fun 👍👍👌 IMHO,those model stilhs were and still are the smoothest handling chainsaws money can buy. But like I always say I have yet to meet a chainsaw I didn't like though. I enjoy runnin'the ol 031 also ,great vid.thanks for posting
It was beautiful day there . I'm hoping you'll don't get the amount of snow there calling for. I thought your dad s saw was running pretty good right up till it stopped .😏😏😏👍👍👍👍👍👍
Oh Boy....The last 2 minutes of any 2 stroke are always the best!👍 I trashed my favorite 041 on 100degree day in August cutting storm damage. It was 2 hot for fooling with wood and I knew it! The biggest gripe I heard about these AV saws was electronics going bad. Is there a cheaper alternative for replacement that works well? Thanks for videos,Ironhorse!
@@cshaffer2904 the ignition coil from an 036 or 044 bolts right up. Delete any points and condensor stuff and set it up just like you would a late model 026 saw
I've got my grandpa's Husqvarna 480 all original, fell my first tree with it 30 some years ago and I still break it out and make a few cuts with it every once and a while. I probably should find a top end for it. 😉
Harvey she REALLY WAS CUTTING LIKE BUTTER MY FRIEND...👍❤️🙏☮️✌️you’re Dad is probably laughing right now lol didn’t know the man but if he was anything like you he was a great man..👍👍👍
Man I feel for ya Harv. My first saw is a old 70e, left to me by an old horse guy that I use to hang around with. When that saw came apart, I felt pretty bad that day. It was good motivation to get that saw going again🙄. Thanks for the video.
Love it Harvey, I e got an 041 Farm Boss I want resurrect, I need to find a good piston cylinder set for starters, not many around, there are aftermarket ones, might have to go that route.
Love seeing the old saw keep history alive...sorry it takes a rebuild great way to make something meaningful and showing a good response to it

To bad it blew up on you Harvey. The good news is that we will get to see the resurrection of the 045. Be good my friend

I'm old enough to remember when loggers were using them they were very reliable & durable those 045s .

Hot knife in butter. Till it quit. Rebuild it and you will have a great saw. Even better it was your Dads saw and you used as a kid. Awesome!!

That surprised me when she let go. She seemed to be running pretty nice right up till then

Number#1 rule in woodcutting - always have 2 saws with you when you go to cut wood. Sometimes three!

Nice memories! That was eating some wood! Will make a nice build!
It sucks that the saw gave out, but you're right, now you get a chance to do it up right. I'm sure that saw has done a ton of work in it's day!
So interesting to see what happens with a blown piston! Thanks for sharing! Love dads tools!
Wonderful idea, nothing like dads old iron Harvey!
Looking forward to seeing the old Stihl back in action. Sorry that happened. Neat old axe.
Wood chips a flying, I'm a crying. Happiness is a sharp saw. Get her fixed, Iron Horse

Greeting from greece. I love all vintage saws have a nice day sir.
I'm always down for a STIHL build! No matter the age.
I would of hung that axe upside down too, because of the profile🤔
Seems like everything runs its best just before they let go. It was throwing chunks.
