I'm not much for leaving comments and maybe this is an older video by now (2020) However this is by far the easiest to follow smoke/fire tutorial for Blender after searching a dozen or so. You've definitely earned a subscribe from me and I look forward to watching some more of your tutorials!
Best fire tutorial I have seen! I was very surprised that you were able to achieve the flame variation and height without touching vorticity or temp difference. Very helpful!!! Thank you for posting!
On the topic of quick settings. While great for quick set ups, knowing how to link it all up yourself inform you later on how to edit a quick set up with confidence. Always good to understand how the sausage is made :D
Very helpful! Will definitely be coming to you for more Blender tutorials! Just a comment on those Smoke Flame values: The Speed is under the 'Reaction' tab; this is defining the speed of the combustion which is essentially the amount of time it takes the flame's fuel to burn through completely. Because the smoke simulation particles are rising like real embers, making the fuel take LONGER to burn by having a SLOWER reaction makes the fuel continue to burn HIGHER into its ascent towards the top of the domain =)
Great, thank you. Not only do you explain how to do the subject, but take care to explain lots of other details about blender as you go which is perfect for beginners like me. For some reason my smoke is very pale and transparent, even though it is set to black and I think I've turned up all the settings as per your tutorial. (Edit: I worked it out, had to crank up the multiply node to 50, a bit higher than in tutorial)
I love your tutorials. I'm 3 years into regular Blender use (after adopting it from maybe 15 - 20 years of C4D) and you still teach stuff in an accessible way. So now a request. I'm working on my first ever scene where, despite being a static render, requires motion blur. More to the point, I have the camera tracking the moving object, and so the motion blur is to everything else. At the moment I'm working on a "suck it and see" approach, but it would be nice to know how and why to set up motion blur in Cycles - pleeeeeeze.
If some of you are having problems(like having the domain show up instead of the fire when rendered), Just make sure u name the attribute correctly... all lowercase :)
hey buddy, thanx for your hard work. You're by far my favorite tutorial maker out there! Got a quick question: Where do you get all your info? Blender is so vast and complicated... Do you visit forums? Which ones? You read manuals? Thanks for an answer!
Something that would be really cool to see would be some tutorials on hair/ fur and clothing; clothing especially. There are almost no tutorials on clothing that can be animated and dynamic.
Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a tutorial on cloth simulation in this series, but not specifically clothes. In my older Blender 2.6 tutorial series I actually have a tutorial on clothing. ... What I recommend is pinning most of the clothing (so it's parented to the character and not simulated), but allowing certain points of the clothing that would naturally move/drape/flow only to be simulated, like the sleeves of t-shirts, but not the shoulders.
Is it possible in blender to make two flow object "creating" fire at two different times but in the same domain ? Fo example im trying to make a tree, falling on an other one and then the second tree will burn but a few moment after the first one ! Please help !
Thanks! Best fire sim tutorial I have seen on youtube. Appreciate the clear and concise information. But do you bake with CPU or GPU? I wasn't quite clear on that?
You are correct. I checked my GPU meter software that came with my 1070 card and it showed little GPU activity when baking......just CPU activity regardless of whether I have CUDA activated or not. Cuda just works for the rendering portion, not the bake.
Hell, that is so very well explained all together! Even a newbie with just interface handling knowledge can follow!!! (One question though: did you ever get a speeding ticket for fast talking??? ;-) Eddie Murphy in his best years is slow motion compared to you! :-D ... ) Thank you very, very much!
so many parameters left guessing about... also where did you derive the "density" "flames" and "color" attribute names from for the attribute nodes? without knowing where they were derived from, or how, we're left guessing again.
BornCG that would be fantastic! It seems every time I get the occasion to incorporate fire and smoke into something, I spend a day or two just experimenting with the parameters just to try to figure out what does what. Sometimes I could have adjusted a parameter to its extremes and its median values and don't even see any visible change. Sometimes I wonder if some parameters are just factors for parent or child parameters. And then it also gets strange trying to figure out why it seems like some parameters appear to be essentially replicated between the domain object and the flow object. I think a parameter by parameter explanation would be great, and if there is some sort of paradigm of concept that would make it all make sense it would really be nice to see it laid out, instead of having to reverse-engineer every new feature that appears in blender.
I'm going to have to give up on my project. I'm trying to make flaming text (Yes, I'm setting the text to mesh and yes I'm on cycles render) but every single time I set the domain it turns pitch black instead of just having black outlines.
Have you tried starting from scratch in a different file? If you get it to work there, you can file - append the fire simulation objects over to your project file with their materials.
hello :D First i want thank you for your great videos! I hade one Problem: there is no change when i put the cloud texture on the Smoke Flow Advanced settings (22:40). I follow you step by step and couldn't found the problem. Did you have a idea?
+Jo Bisch good question! I'm really not sure. Let's say you wanted to make a person carrying a torch. I'm not sure if you'd just make a huge domain and then just rely on adaptive domain, or if you'd animate the domain, or parent the domain to the person's hand. Worth testing...
I think I'm gonna test, but there is an option in the domain panel (in the physics) you can check "adaptative domain" and a second domain will be created, which will be automatically animated to fit the current physics simulation.
The point of the adaptive domain is so that you don't animate your domain size. No matter how big your domain is blender will simulate only inside the adaptive domain so there is no need for you to animate the size. Fot the movement from my tests with adaptive domain the simulation reacts to the movement and without it does not. So if you want to animate a person carrying a torch do it with adaptive domain and move the domain around with the torch.
I dont now why, bt every time i use the color ramp node Blender gets stuck and is no usable until i delete it. and im useing Belnder 2.78a like you. So please help me!
No joy on this, and another issue (the "denoising") switch, which would be so nice to have. Afraid I need to upgrade my old (32 bit, no graphics card) computer. But thank you.
I've made tutorials on: basic modelling, the bevel tool to make the keys rounded, materials to make slightly glossy light/dark materials, the text tool (for letters on keys), the Boolean Modifier (to cut slightly larger holes out for the keys in a rectangular plain), Lighting, Depth-of-field blur, auto camera switching, animation, and rendering a movie file. It's up you to put the pieces together my friend. In the words of Rob Schneider, "YOU CAN DO IT!" :D
The flame and smoke might appear quite transparent in the PNG. Have you tried overlaying your pong on top of black in an image editor or compositor to check?

Thanks! :) .. I forgot to cover vorticity, but it's rotation. It's in two spots, and I believe one has more effect than the other.
Congrats man! Watched 75 videos in your series! Awesome never got bored or lost interest! Keep going!!
Thanks! :)

got as far as the Hi-res and adaptive domain, and the adaptive box doesn't show, nor does my fire :-/

Yup, that's in this tutorial. :)
Are you suggesting I have to watch the video before commenting? :) I do apologize just wanted to help.
pllz create car modeling with blueprints
is it possible to use same method to make candle light?
Yup. You might also put a lamp object in the fire to make it project more light too, instead of washing out the colour of the fire.
thank you
I tried once but I couldnt make the fire looks like curved like a candle fire... If you succeed, tell me
i also tried but it didnt work well so i leaved it and asked my friend to do it for me he is still trying when he completes i will inform you
I dont now why, bt every time i use the color ramp node Blender gets stuck and is no usable until i delete it. and im useing Belnder 2.78a like you. So please help me!
I suggest updating to 2.79b. I have had issues with 2.78 on slower school lab computers recently.
Alright. Thank you! I'm gonna test it right away
My first smoke and fire render in Blender but totally failed. Nothing showed up in my scene after clicking render.
do it again never give up. my fire are so good.
My Blender 2.79 reliably crashes if I try to select the circle after turning on "smoke" for the domain. Anything I can do?
Have you tried 2.79b? There were some bugs in a couple of versions. 2.79b should be stable though.
Thanks, I did that. Haven't tried everything out yet.
No joy on this, and another issue (the "denoising") switch, which would be so nice to have. Afraid I need to upgrade my old (32 bit, no graphics card) computer. But thank you.
Hmm, so color changing only happens when rendering. I see.
How to move it to unity ?!

anyone able to render the flame as image to RGBA .png file? all i get is empty frame
