I don't know what Transport Minister Bouchard, and Prime Minister Mulroney were thinking when they slashed service in western Canada, they should left everything alone.
I have that video on both vhs and dvd.
I love seeing all the vintage fleets Including the steam heated ones!
46:03 - 46:31 is always my fave part!
God this is the most 1990 thing I have ever seen. Thank you for putting this together, original creator. Very enjoyable.
Wow that VIA light power at 12:02 is almost coming off the rails!! I love it!
So funny- I just brought mine in from the shed to finally transfer it, then thought (!) about searching youtube first- I hadn't seen it yet. Will settle in here, thanks.
Did The Canadian's dining car stay in Sudbury after the split into 2 sections, one Toronto on Montreal, or did the Montreal section keep the diner but no Park car?
This is very heartbreaking that via passenger service has been reduced 😥😢
Trains are a wonderful magnificent mahine, love the via trains.
45:14 Now I know why the Raised Letter K5LAs today sound so bad. These GO Transit K5LAs I know were corked but this little snippet here is all I need to know. Micro Precision may just need to de-cork them a bit.
That isn't how the Corker or Doubletag K5LAs is supposed to sound. These horns were specially tuned by Robert Swanson, and the featured unit in this video was likely fouled. Here are some better examples of Go Transit K5LAs.

And here is one of those 1977 "raised-letter" sounding K5LAs:

Now that this includes snow, I’m watching to the end
I had no idea so many RDC's were in use by VIA. Interesting to see them and also the all blue livery VIA trains. Here in the west the consists were usually mixed stainless steel and ex-CN blue with the gold stripe, which in my opinion, spoiled the streamlined look of the train.
Where would a 6-car RDC train be going on the Lakeshore West line?
I miss seeing those via blue and yellow stripe cars!
i dont feel old watching these videos cuz they trains havent changed much from the outside hhahah
Great Railroad classics Canada!
Would you have any footage of Peterborough or Havelock? At around this time?
18:30 LRC locomotive looking incongruous towing considerably taller 1950s coaches and a Steam Generator Unit (built with corrugated ends like a boxcar).
46:10 Quite unusual to see borrowed VIA LRC and SGU heading the ONR Northland! Did it visit Timmins?
Substantial video, pure Canadiana. I'm curious to know where the 'multi-Budd Car'(4) train runs to and from? In this video it's seen along the east/west Lakeshore line.
Some trains west of Toronto were RDC, Kitchener / Stratford / London. In that case if it's on the Lakeshore then it's deadheading from Union to the maintenance centre.
@@haweater1555 NICE!
14:05 The train of 6 RDCs is possibly the consist of 2 trains together that had arrived in the morning and now deadheading to TMC. Either London, or Niagara Falls or Peterborough trains.
@@haweater1555 Sweet. Thank you for that. I can now recall riding an 'all' RDC Budd car train (with my wonderful Aunt whom recently passed away at 100) from Toronto to London roundabout 1972.
1:17 thats fast for a power move!
I'm loving the budd rail cars and old fB9 locomotives in the original via blue , yellow & black colours 👌
I own 8 of Mr.Barnes’ videos. Can proudly say it was my childhood as I would spend hours watching them. This one I never owned but I do have the Feather River Canyon and CN6060/ CPR 2860 5 day doubleheader videos.
57:39 - Hi mom.
26:02 - what train was this??? 😮
Do you mean where is it going or what is the type of equipment. Via used to operate Rail Diesel Cars to Niagara Falls and west to London and Sarnia if I recall.
Rest is peace paul barns!!
56:38
I remember the union station announcement chime.
Gotta love the lrc horn!!!!
Via’s last days?
Bad title. This wasn't VIA's final days--they're still in business--but the final days for SOME trains due to budget cutbacks, notably the Canadian.
While a bit misleading, this was the original title of the program specifically for those 7 days prior to the Jan 1990 cutbacks.
By all rights we should call it the Bouchard Axe.
But really VIA is now nearly invisible on the passenger transport outside the corridor.
Via Rail still runs passengers ervice though??
Yes, the title is clickbait
@@Xander-m1w Title is of the original program tape, visible at 3:47
Yes, and the public TV special "Last Train Across Canada" is also a misnomer.
ongoing proof of Ontario being the west's daftest
But it wasn't the final 7 days.
Were you always like this or
@@VIARailMaddy I don't know what you mean--what do you mean? I was stating a fact.
While a bit misleading, this was the original title of the program. It's specifically referencing the last 7 days prior to the Jan 1990 cutbacks.
