My grandparents were the first black family on their block in 1960 in Windsor Hills. Our family still owns the house. I used to take walks with my grandmother and she showed me where Ray Charles, Tina Turner, etc lived. In Baldwin Vista, where I grew up, we had a few people, too. ;) You did a great job with this. It's sad how much things are changing. Thank you for putting it together.
Happy you did this documentary to preserve our history. I've personally lived in Baldwin Hills/Baldwin Village all my life. Over 28 years now and I still live there till this day. Ive been seeing all the gentrification take place now currently. The neighborhood is definitely mixed. I've been seeing asian and whites moving in literally. The neighborhood has definitely changed for the better but I want my black people to continue to benefit. So, don't selll your houses and if you do sell it, go ahead and sell it to an African American person, and buy lots of property in that area too! Thank you for a job well done on this video.
The problem with other people saying "get over it" in regards to non-blacks moving into the neighborhood is that I don't think they are fully aware of the problems blacks have faced when attempting to buy nice houses in nice neighborhoods elsewhere even if they had enough money. (Discrimination by realtors.) Because of this bad history and the non-blacks trying to keep blacks out of "their" nice neighborhoods (and trying to keep them in various slums all over the US), it shouldn't take a genius to understand why someone would recommend selling houses exclusively to other black people. Because even in 2022 it is well-documented that many Americans still can't grasp the concept of black people's civil rights and such...
I’m Jewish and I’m going to be buying up all the houses in ladera heights! We’re transforming this neighborhood to an upper class white/Jewish neighborhood. We’re going to relocate the blacks to Inglewood and Compton and Long Beach.

White flight is occurring in the Bay and LA again. With the pandemic people have no reason to be in cities when they can work from home. I live in San Francisco and my neighborhood lost 1500 people in the last month.
Segregation was the best thing to ever happen to us.... If we would've remained segregated and autonomous, we wouldn't have to worry about gentrification and whites Asians Hispanics moving to our hoods.
WTF are you talking about? Nothing good comes from segregation, except more racism. Which is apparent from your comment. FYI you got it backwards. In 1942, when my family bought their newly built home in Windsor Hills, it was predominately white. As more blacks moved in, there was never any racial tension. My Grandfather developed life long friendships with the neighbors. There was a mutual respect back then that does not exist in that neighborhood today, 3 generations later. Neighbors would outright say, when you gonna sell? They'd find any little thing wrong in order to report us. Left the trash can on the street one day longer than permitted. My car cover has a tear along the side, actually got a letter from the county ordering me to buy a new one or get fined. The list goes on and on. So yeah! tell me again how racist I am? How many racist white people you know that live their whole life in an area where no whites live? I'll wait!
There are many nice "Black" areas of LA I was a service worker for years there and I did fine when ever I had a call there in Baldwin Hills. I would not work in certain areas because I had trouble collecting or I was worried about having my truck stolen or my tools.
@@chrisreynolds6391 they tried to sale it to white folks and thet just dont want it. La does not have the same housing crises as the bay area not going to work.
Tina Turner brought me here. Her home was very beautiful I had to learn more of this mid century black Beverly Hills and her 1 million dollar asking price. It all comes down to you live where you can afford. I could not afford her old neighborhood.
I don't understand why people are getting so mad at that their neighborhood is not a 100% black anymore I grew up spending my summer's in Inglewood right on the Ladera Heights and Inglewood border at my grandfather's house which I now live in because my grandfather gave me the house after he passed it is nice to pay the property taxes from 1948 I am glad that property values are going up I'm glad that the area is getting cleaned up I don't understand why you want to keep properties prices down so the area stays ghetto
All black means ghetto? Diversity means not ghetto? The property value is going up only because non blacks are moving in, and they respect non black homeowners more than black ones. That’s the problem. The association with black ppl and ghetto.
@@ErasingToxicity_89 Well said Hey, other races respect you more than you're own.And that's why the areas are not all black, we get jealous of our own people very quickly.
This is a really good look at the history of Baldwin Hills and all this area but why on gods or do you have to put in the background gangster rap just glorifying drugs violence I mean black people need to move past that seriously
Probably not. My family lived in the same house for 3 generations since 1942. My mom Graduated from Dorsey High. You are right. We are not welcome there. Even though we were there long before any of the surrounding neighbors. They never liked the fact that we were there. A long history of harassment and racist behavior towards us.
This is such a racist video, i am an hispanic guy who has asian, black, white and arab friends and i wouldn't mind living right next to a black neighbor as long as he is friendly, we need to end with the racism in the US and mostly in the most diverse state in the US (California).
Daniel R, you would need to understand a little bit of American history as to why neighborhoods such as the "Black Beverly Hills" materialized in the first place. Across the nation and prior to desegregation, blacks, no matter their educational or income level, were forced to reside in overcrowded slums, ghettos, hoods etc. Once the professional/educated class of blacks were able to purchase homes in nice neighborhoods (all overwhelmingly white at the time) white flight occurred in most cases, opening up room but no one but blacks to move in, as it was undesirable to whites by that time. Overtime, as all of the original black children of the doctors, lawyers, entertainers, etc that grew up in the area and overtime, it sort of lost that " most sought after neighborhood for the upwardly mobile blacks" and that left mostly our elderly and lower income brothers and sisters and that led to a general decline of that area of Black AND Hispanic neighborhoods across the country. Same thing is happening where I live in Dallas. Although its not really black neighborhoods, but high% Hispanic neighborhoods, like the Bishop arts district, Elmwood, Vicery place, Jefferson Blvd. Most high income predominantly white neighborhoods in the city are very expensive, leaving many whites not able to afford those prices either. Therefore, they have to look in more affordable areas over the more expensive west side, like Bel air, Malibu, Brentwood, etc. Last thing, I think another reason this area has experienced black flight is due simply to the fact that most rich black professionals/entertainers live in all other wealthy neighborhoods throughout LA and some have even left the state of CA, where they can get more bang for their buck. All it takes is more wealthy blacks to repopulate those areas like they did in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Ahshfbwbwjcn AJ we. Eh There’s literally been studies proving its harder to get a loan if you’re a POC www.google.com/amp/s/www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/01/10/blacks-and-hispanics-face-extra-challenges-in-getting-home-loans/%3famp=1
Ellise Walton yeah it’s harder if you have a bad credit history. Any black person with a 700+ credit score will be able to get a loan.

I love both of these documentaries, and your style of documentary... but you are missing a perspective. My seventy-three-year-old white mother has lived in Ladera Heights almost her entire life, and I grew up there as well. Being the only white kid in an affluent black neighborhood is definitely a perspective very few have had. If I you do a part 3, I would definitely be honored to be interviewed.
Thanks for watching, Chris! I’m glad you enjoyed the film and your experience is definitely something to think about. It would be awesome to interview you. You can send us an email at: theafterlifefilms@gmail.com
What I also see is that more black peoples needs to get the into urban development to be a part of the building and decisions that affect the neighborhoods.
The state of Maryland has the most affluent Black neighborhoods in the country, not the Baldwin Hills area.
You guys love to argue about this but being from SC I would take either one lol
I did live in Maryland,I loved it but I need that LA weather 😏
Yup! Woodmore for example
@David...Yes, the Prince George's county:

Actually, you all would be wrong. The top three "richest Black communiites" in the U.S. are View Park, Windsor Hills, and Ladera Heights. See here.............

Nice video...we should be allowed to have our own"neighborhoods" without the pressure of being driven out ! all other groups have their own towns etc. Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Bombay....where's our TOWN ?
I assume you're white?
The first word that came to mind was : Revenge! 😅 Great documentary. 💯 I went looking up these neighborhoods when someone from another post brought "Windsor Hills 'up. And they spoke on how mostly wealthy BP lived there.
It’s sad because a lot of African Americans are selling there homes for Ms to Caucasian and moving to riverside and Palmdale and the valley and stuff
Why is that sad? Why do you hate white people so much?
Ahshfbwbwjcn AJ we. Eh because we blacks been through hell in this damn country and the only way for us to be successful and survival is have each other’s backs. Stop trying to destroy us with your integration tactics.

Just focus on African Americans who are not in the entertainment industry.
All in CALIFORNIA. Black lawyers, Black doctors live there, beautiful homes.
I would love to live in a wealthy, predominantly black neighborhood.
You watch to much television ! What planet do you live on ?
White flight is occurring in the Bay and LA again. With the pandemic people have no reason to be in cities when they can work from home. I live in San Francisco and my neighborhood lost 1500 people in the last month.
We live in Windsor Hills 🙋🏽♂️ #blackbeverlyhills
Who cares
I'll wait!
Autonomous... Never will happen without the white man.
I love ladera heights ❤
There are many nice "Black" areas of LA I was a service worker for years there and I did fine when ever I had a call there in Baldwin Hills. I would not work in certain areas because I had trouble collecting or I was worried about having my truck stolen or my tools.
Beautiful area, sad that the people who actually love the area,Afro-Americans they get pushed out. So unfair.
This is why we got black Beverly Hills took from us from not keeping it a secret and posting it on things like this
Well its 2019 and the area is still not gentrified. The Crenshaw line is way behind schedule.
It's too close to the Inglewood oil field. White folks don't want to live there.
@@chrisreynolds6391 they tried to sale it to white folks and thet just dont want it. La does not have the same housing crises as the bay area not going to work.
No need for gentrification
Fuck gentrification
Not now they are buying it up now...my aunt has lived in Inglewood since the early 80s and never had white neighbors on either side until 2020
I live in view Park
Planet Hollywood went Planet Third World.
Tina Turner brought me here. Her home was very beautiful I had to learn more of this mid century black Beverly Hills and her 1 million dollar asking price. It all comes down to you live where you can afford. I could not afford her old neighborhood.
Inglewood is next big bucks for home owners
Hollywood use to be the hood in the 1930s
big d and it's still is . look up gangs in Hollywood

Funny the first 2 minutes of the video is considered the ghetto aka the jungles
Yeah, the jungle was the first area built in Baldwin Hills, and the apartments were considered "upper class" back then.
True it was the Baldwin village part
@Alex To Go Which "the blacks" do you speak of?
Alex To go you’re a moron
@@DjTIMEJD did you not read my original comment? The gang bangers. The "bloods" or whatever their called.
I painted some of those houses and always wondered why are there so many black ppl around here..? Now I know.
Sound pretty racist of you to have that thought. You assume all black folk are poor? True definition of unconscious bias.
Im laughing,but i aint laughing..( chuckles a bit )
@@ErasingToxicity_89 facts put that clown in his place

1:10 you need to travel more. Neighborhoods in Nigeria and Ghana and Gambia have far more wealth!!!!
This is a really good look at the history of Baldwin Hills and all this area but why on gods or do you have to put in the background gangster rap just glorifying drugs violence I mean black people need to move past that seriously
I was just thinking about buying a house in Windsor Hills. I'm not black, judging by these comments sounds like I'm not welcome here.
The 2020 Census will tell the story. I’ll be surprised if these areas are collectively even 70% Black still.
What’s your point?
Ahshfbwbwjcn AJ we. Eh Can you read?
LeimertDreamer is it problematic that it’s less than 70% black?

This is such a racist video, i am an hispanic guy who has asian, black, white and arab friends and i wouldn't mind living right next to a black neighbor as long as he is friendly, we need to end with the racism in the US and mostly in the most diverse state in the US (California).

How is this video racist? You’re a weirdo.
@@TheCm900 Right! Its people who name off what racial backgrounds they claim as friends that be the ones who is racist.
Why is it other races push for diversity in black communities but not other communities. Why does this feels like a set up.
Look like Obama pass by and everything went down to shit
