Funny you say black sabbath feels at the beginning, because that riff is like a call back to As I Am, which starts off with a similar sounding riff inspired by and referencing black sabbath, the band and song, since it was DTs first all metal styled album
I didn't know that! What I did know was that the song was a f u to one of the guitarists for Queensryche for acting like Petrucci didn't know how to play, so that's where some of the lyrics come in. "Lost in a sea of mediocrity, slow down. You cannot touch the way I play, or tell me what to say." Also my favorite Dream Theater lyric, "I've been trying to justify you. In the end I will just defy you."
What you think is Pretucci doubleing the guitar could be Jordan playing the same riff in a keyboard. Jordan and Pretucci do that alot in Dream Theater songs. The Parasomnia album is the first to be recorded at the expanded D.T.H.Q. Dream Theater bought the space next to the original studio space. Can't wait until February ehen the new album cones out
I have to disagree with Portnoy on them removing Hell's Kitchen from I think Burning My Soul. It absolutely is much better as an instrumental song AND being a prelude to Lines In The Sand. And by them I mean the record label. They decided to take it off of the end of Burning My Soul and give it it's own thing and I agree.
If the rest of the album is like this, then it could end up being my favorite album from Dream Theater. All of this song is great, and yet it seems like it's taking them no effort to do it. And yes, I'm still here. 🙂
Yes, their influences have always been evidently & proudly displayed on their long sleeves, but to me, the “call backs” on this track of their triumphant return of the classic “Dream Theater” lineup are, quite frankly, DREAM THEATER, and I can hardly wait to hear the rest of this new chapter of their legendary story. Welcome back Dream Theater, and welcome home, Mike Portnoy! 🤘🏼❤️🔥
I played this song to my kids in the car and they said it sounded creepy. Bearing in mind I listen to some pretty aggressive death and black metal and they came out with that then but haven’t before. Amazing how kids intuition picks up on all that!
Hey, Geebz. Love watching your reviews. I've requested many of the artists that you've discovered. Other songs by Dream Theater you might enjoy are Constant Motion & Space Dye Vest. Would love to see your reaction to those 2 songs.
Hey Man, I was just scrolling through my youtube when i came across your content (which i think is fantastic) and went down a giant rabbit hole of watching some of your older radiohead videos. I was wondering if you had listened to much wilco? they have some really cool arrangements which i think you might like! keep up the great content
I'm still here! Dream Theater have been re-releasing the same album for the past 20yrs. I'd recommend listening to anything from the 90s, especially Awake.
"Why isn't the bass 2db louder!?" I first asked this question over 15 years ago... still suffering from lack of Myung in the mix after all these years. DT13 and The Astonishing had the best bass tone they ever achieved and now we're back to low volume days.
Had a hard time hearing you over the music. Anyway, this has everything I want from a DT song, the time signature changes, mind-blowing shredding, a beautiful melodic guitar solo, a catchy chorus. Great stuff.
Hello, I understand your channel is primarily based around reacting towards metal music, I was wondering if you could look over a band called, the Number twelve looks like you, specifically Civeta Dei, it would be interesting to see what your opinions are! Thanks!
I'm still here! Cautiously excited about his album, after I found View an incredibly disappointing one. Hopefully not all songs on this album will have the vocals kinda slapped on as an afterthought. Even this song, as much as I like it, kinda feels like the vocals weren't put that much effort into.
If anyone wants to discover a great band that no one knows about, check out lift the veil by black sheep shepherds. Awesome Indie band that just started releasing music this year
Apparently Courtney is actually rapping on some of this. It’s really hard to tell. Would certainly appreciate more of a Spiritbox influence in the song, but appreciate the genre crossover.
I'm going to be honest, I haven't really listened to Dream Theater since the late 00s. I feel like once you've heard 4-5 DT songs you've heard them all. Normally I like bands that stay consistent between albums but DT is the exception. Prog by nature is not boring, but they try their best to stick to a formula. I've also never liked the vocalist. Sorry for the negative, just think they are super overrated as composers (obviously they are masterful musicians)
You are completely wrong. Every album sounds different except for Distance Over Time and A View From The Top Of The World. Those are the only two that seem to follow the same formula. The Astonishing can't sound more different if it tried.
@@davidramirezrodriguez3373 i don't question the influence and some kind of dedication/admiration/similarities in some melodic sequences of their songs. but overall it's entirely different styles and music, so much that for me it's "comparing apples and oranges". the DT playbook always had this bombast and music-overloaded show-off sections Rush barely had any interest in doing. they knew how to "less is more". DT barely went that route.
@@metalhos Nah, you're being critical when it's not needed. They have sections that sound like Rush and that's all he said. He was not saying the entire song is Rush like. It is not the same as comparing apples to oranges. Apples to oranges would be to compare Dream Theater to Taylor Swift. Two completely different things. Rush is prog and Dream Theater is prog metal or whatever, but still prog. It would be like comparing a granny smith to a different type of apple. Same fruit, different taste.
@@scorpiusbalthazar4327 it was rather meant to be a general sentiment (the comparison) than directly addressed towards Geebz reaction but i understand that it looks a bit awkward now. anyhow, i don't want to nitpick either but you could as well call "prog" the fruits when the category music is "food". all a question of perspective ;)
"Beautifully inhuman." Love it! 🤟

I didn’t call Black Sabbath in all my listens but as soon as Geebz said it I couldn’t stop hearing it!
I hear Rush in the beginning, good song!
That ending guitar solo just brings me right back to In the Presence Of Enemies
0:13 Dude this is the only reaction video I've been waiting for since the first day it came out haha!
Not always the first, but always the best ✅
Dream Theater = metal Jedi.. killer tune! Thanks for the reaction!
Ah yes, that was the word I was looking for!
Thank you for mentioning the bass tone!!
"There's a lot of callbacks to Rush in this" and then the Alex Lifeson-esque solo starts right after 😄

They also like having Myung doing the same thing with Petrucci. I think that's why it can be hard to hear him because he's matching the guitar.
Nailed the Rush vibe. Been watching you for years and lurking. You’re awesome dude
I like this new format of talking over, very cool! So glad Portnoy's back, baby, yeah!
I'm still here... great review. I'm very excited for this album!
Yes I'm still here 🖤
For a legendary and often overlooked DT journey, do Hells Kitchen and Lines in the Sand (together)

It only gets better my friend! You're in for a ride and a treat.
So glad you did this one! I’ve been eagerly waiting to see what you thought of it.

Always present for a DT reaction. Greetings to Hawaii.
Thank you Geebz

First I didn't like it but this song really grew on me. The instrumental sections are excellent and chorus is good.
I'm still here! Dream Theater have been re-releasing the same album for the past 20yrs. I'd recommend listening to anything from the 90s, especially Awake.
Geebz, please check out Dream Theater's Octavarium. It's an incredible song.

1 and a half month to see them live

Great
Dream Theater is very talented carbon-based life-forms
@1:09 the drum fill he does reminds me of 'In the Air Tonight' by Phil Collins.

I've gotten lots of Megadeth vibes from this
check out: The Acid Lakes of Ganymede by Parius!
I'm still here 🤙
Still here
I've missed Mikes organic drumming cause Mangini felt more like a drum machine
I'm still here.

Check out Nugget Nemesis.
I didn’t like the delay on that guitar solo.
Listened to this when it came out. Killer instrumental, but I just can’t do the vocals.
Still here!
You haven't done opeth....s3❤
Overhyped.Just ok song

Cause Myung have the worst bass sound thats why they keeping him lower always!
No soul

please don't compare this band to Rush. dream theater have the skills and the variety in the menue but not the unique taste.
......???..... Why dude, why the need, the urge to tell others what not to do, there is no dt without rush, there will be always callbacks to the paps
