I don't think I have ever seen Alan hate someone vocal voice as he hates James LaBrie's vocal. I think his vocal is what makes DT unique as no other vocalist has a voice like his. Alan probably needs to listen to them more to get used to his vocal, because it is so unique.
The whole problem with critics of James LaBrie's vocals is that they cannot give OBJECTIVE reasons WHY they don't like his vocals, so the value of such critics is immediately multiplied by zero.
Dream Theater has made instrumental versions of some of their albums. A UA-camr has actually took the vocals out of all their studio albums with no artifacts. The deluxe release of Parasomnia will have an instrumental version of the album
If you don't like Dream Thater, just don't listen to their music, MP, JP and JM are the founders, but DT's success is closely related to the fantastic voice of James LaBrie, no matter who it hurts...
But let's not get their original twisted. The founders were JP and JM. Then they found MP. Too many people wanna pretend it's the Mike show with his backing band Dream Theater.
I remember being somewhat flummoxed myself with James' vocals when I first started getting into DT. The first time I listened to them was on the Live at Budokan DVD. I still hadn't really developed an ear for Progressive Metal, so I was doubly confused on most songs. I remember only being able to listen to select tracks like In the Name of God, where the vocals match the music way more and I was so into the musicality that I could brush off the ineffable feeling of the vocals. As someone else suggested (and you also pointed out at ~10:01), it's not that he's in any technical way wrong. It's just not what you expect to hear next to the music, so it takes getting used to. I am betting that if you get into more of their discography you won't be able to imagine a better singer than James LaBrie for the band.

I get that some people don't like LeBrie, I really do understand. But that reaction reminds me of that episode of South Park where Cartmen feeds Scott Tennerman his parent's remains in the chili, and then Radiohead shows up and disses on Scott for being a whiney bitch.
I am not a fan of his vocals but they are no terrible. Just some imformation, in 1994 he had food poisoning and that affected his vocals. With time he adapted to a style that fits him. I prefer studio version for the vocals but there some performances that are really cool live like Budokan or Score. I don't like "Pull me Under", it's too repetitive. Also, I don't like their earlier albums but my suggestion would be the albums that go from Metropolis pt 2 to Blacks Clouds. I don't know if you will give them more chances but the musicianship alone is worth the time. Also. Liquid Tension Experiment that is guitar, keyboard and drums with another bassist and it's all instrumental. And Petrucci solo albums. There's a lot from them
Labrie is an extremely competent vocalist, and I would never argue otherwise. But when you take 4 of the very best, most creative musicians in the world and put them with a competent guy, the total doesn't equal the sum of the parts.
His cansdian accent is what does it. It was the reason i was slow to get into them; now i like his voice. For the record there are alot of bad voices out there if we want to be super critical. Bruce dickinson is not much better still love Madien.
Not even sure why I still watch this channel. Eric is super chill, and has a great attitude, but seems like Alan thinks he's the be-all end-all of music critics. I started watching because you liked BABYMETAL, but anymore, it's just a know-it-all grouch fest...IMO
At least let Eric enjoy his review..it's almost like ruining the song for him because you can't stand someone's vocals. You have to look at the song in a whole and this is one of their best songs on ther discography. Hope you can open up in the future and just give them more of a chance.
Good on you for sticking to your opinion and not trying to please the crowds, I respect that. But I do feel like you're going in with your mind already made-up about the song/band rather than giving it a real shot. Piece of advice, don't judge a whole band based on 1 or 2 songs when they have a discography of 100s of songs. I've slept on a lot of good music because of that mentality
