Would love to get my hands on one of these CLF basses too, sounds amazing

Bout time you got a “better fender”. Also I heard once the little nipple was Leo giving the finger to fender for suing him on using a similar headstock to fender on early g&ls.
P bass on steroids? That is what I call my Musicman Sabre especially switching to the neck pickup. When I was in high school, I was able to borrow a G&L bass for a gig. I absolutely loved it. That was before the internet and I never could find one locally. I found the MM and knew it was made by Leo so grabbed it. But listening to you that’s definitely piqued my interest in a G&L. Great tones!

6:59 just realized they smoothed out the headstock...I always hated it too but it's not going to stop me from getting a vintage G&L Rampage or three on the tenor side - gotta get my Cantrell on.
8:20 in my dim memories, I remember the few G&L basses I've touched feeling a lot nicer than pretty much every P bass I'd touched at that point - you've noticed the bonus that it's also fun to run. I am a passive leaning guy myself and let the sig chain and my tone/vol to the rest of the talking. So the separate treble/bass controls actually sort of moved G&L a couple dozen slots up the list in order of opportunistic acquisition.
@@LowEndLobster my favorite G&L's are the Kiloton and the M-2500. Such beefy tone monsters. I'm kind of having the buyers remorse on my recent Sterling Sting Ray 35 CA purchase...kind of. 😆

Great add to your Lobster Museum of Low Frequency Exhibition. Still keeping my fingers crossed that a Serek bass will show up some day. No wait ...that would make this a bass porn channel.
Wow!! What I meant to say was WOW!!! This is one cooool bass ! I've always liked G&L and have owned several. They're built solid as granite and always sound fantastic. Because of your review I think I'm going to have to cop one. Every setting on the pickup selector switch was Phenomenal ! And every style; slap, fingerstyle, and I even heard a few really nice chords in there ( I'd Like to hear those more often because your're great at it ) I imagine playing every genre on this bass : Jazz of all kinds, Classic rock, Country-and-western, Motown and Stax soul, Gospel, The standards ala Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, ZZ Top, Joe Sample, Aerosmith, McCoy Tyner, Stanley Turrentine', etc, etc..... @@LowEndLobster totally agree, how does it compare to a fender! Love the content. I really like how you review a great mix of basses and I like the honesty.
Great Leo Fender vintage Sound, G&L was and is the better Choice for Quality Sound and craftsmanship. I heard the instrument as 4str. Bass in a Funk band some 40 years ago , but could not afford it as a student. It's on my to have list now!
My brother had one of these basses, I used to watch him play when he was in high school and saw him literally blow up an amp, that thing was mighty lol
I've seen some of the EBMM vids talking about how the old stingrays used to overload amps. Makes me think that instead of changing the bass, we've just made better amps ;P.
The kiloton pickup is 1 coil closer to the bridge compared to a stingray. The stingray would be perceived as having the more appropriate slap tone (by a hair imo) but the Kilo can pull off the finger style /Jaco sound very well. I've tested the Kilo 5 with my amp rigs and holy smokes! It's a monster for sure. If anything, the Kilo is more akin to the Sterling.
@@LowEndLobster i got to check out a tribute kiloton for a few minutes in a store. It was certainly okay for the major difference in price, but nothing near as nice as my US made L-100, JB2, and L1K basses. I really want to try a US Kiloton.
Lobster: your influence spreads wide and far. I saw Bully's video today and....ready for this?....grew a lobster hand!! I bet it came from touching the box, like a virus, the mutation took ahold. Thank God we hit that "like" button and that saved poor Bully! Lmao. Kidding aside, this G&L is really beautiful. One day I will add it to my collection, along with a Music Man Stingray. Keep on pinching! Take care, Patrick.
@@LowEndLobster I think the reason why it sounds like a MM/P-bass hybrid is because the pickup is in the middle instead of close to the bridge like most MM bass pickups are.
Is that headstock a new design? I personally never liked the nipple either, but this headstock seems pretty nice! Also I'm a new sub and I really like your content, keep it up my man :D
I've used original era L1000 it has basically p-bass tone but at the same time there is a MM stingray tone...really nice and interesting bass...Thanks Leo
Yo Lobsta!!! It’s me again - that Brooklyn A-hole living in Virginia... So I am definitely a G&L fanboy - slightly more so than an EBMM fanboy. I have a 1996 L2500 (1st year production version with original 4+1 headstock, my first 5-string) which I have purchased brand new - I actually traded a 1994 Stingray Fretless plus $250 for it in Spring of ‘97. It is an L2500 Custom model, which was around for only one or two years featuring an Alder body with book matched Ash top. Mine has a wonderful 4-piece Flame Maple neck. I’ve never seen another G&L like it. It came wired from the factory with Parallel and Series with Coil Tap (which is actually OMG), but not straight Series like the current models. I later added straight Series wiring, but don’t really like it - way too much nasal midrange. Anyway, the point of my ramblings is to bring to light what this OMG thing is... If you’re familiar with how a 4-lead humbucker is wired in Series (you should be after looking at the Sterling Ray24 Classic pickup), if you take those Red and White wires that are tapped off and touch them to ground, you cancel out that coil and have Split coil (basically Single Coil). Now OMG takes that same principle and adds a .1uF capacitor in between those leads and ground. The capacitor allows for high frequency cut off, just like a passive tone set up, while keeping the low end of that coil. So what you have is the bottom end of a Series-wired humbucker and the sweet top end of a Single Coil. You may experience some SC noise in OMG mode. I may just get rid of Series on my L2500 and just do Single Coil along with Parallel and OMG. In my opinion, the L1000 (and L2X) neck pickup in OMG will do the absolute best P-bass tone without being a P-bass. If I am correct, on the L1000, with the switch Up is Parallel, Middle is Split (single) Coil, down is OMG.
Forgot to mention...I actually like the current G&L headstock with the “can opener” point in it. I find it funny how Fender sued G&L for the old headstock, while the new headstock with pointy thing looks much more like a Fender headstock. In my opinion, the old headstock looks unrefined and sort of bland...as if it had a sock over the real one...The headstock on my ‘96 is huge and belligerent - I love it!
Best sounding bass l ever owned was a G&L l hated the way it looked but it made my bad playing sound better, no string buzz I'm playing chords with just beautiful, I was having some money problems and I sold it to my friend and told him I was going to buy it back and before I could get it back yet already sold it one of the biggest mistakes of my life
Thanks Erik! I'm playing through an Orange Crush 50 BXT (not my main amp but I use it for all videos) with the goal of delivering a true and unaltered example of what the bass would sound like through an everyday amp rig.
Would love to see a video comparing a G&L Tribute L2000 or Kiloton and a Ray34HH? Just curious how the fit and finish and overall build quality compare? The Ray34 and L2000 tribute are both in that same price range, just curious what's the best bang for your buck!
Thanks Michael! Hehe that is funny. It's interesting to see where we all start and progress as individuals with our particular tastes in instruments. Honestly, I used to be a HUGE J-bass guy when I first started. Wasn't a fan of Stingrays, P-basses, or really anything else. Now, I only have like one "traditional" J and like 20 Stingrays ahaha.
Well Lobster , I bought the Ray 34 , seems to be a better pickup and preamp then the Ray 4 or Ray 24. . My G&L 2000 is active surprised that your L1000 is not.
@@michaelblaney4461 Awesome! Indeed, the Ray34 (especially on sale) is a tremendous value compared to the Ray24 - which IMO occupies a really weird spot. Yeah the circuit on the L1000 is a weird one, basically a separate bass and treble cut, like two separate tone knobs. Then he went active with the 2000. I need to do more research into the G&L history.
Thanks! Yeah, these L1000's are BEASTLY. I just shot the full review yesterday. They're very special instruments and the electronics are super innovative even by today's standards. A two band passive EQ (cut only) with no battery!

Thank you! I think most 4 stringers hover around 18-19mm spacing. That's where I'm comfy personally. I think the Ibanez BTB 4 string used to have 20mm spacing too (and 35" scale).
After watching your 2 or 3 vids spotlighting the L-1000.....I just ordered one about an hour ago (in Blueburst).....way more bass than I was going to get, originally....but hey...if you do it, and do it right, maybe you'll only have to do it once.....right? ;-)

Nice review, and I agree about the bottle opener headstocks> yuck. I owned an original , ser# 0003...and I bought one of these which i quickly returned.; the frets were HUGE and not like the originals.
There's no split coil mode. You've got parallel, single coil and OMG (basically series but with 0.1μf capacitor across one of the pickup coils, drastically cutting the high frequencies).

Dude thank you so much for the info! Would love to see some pics of your L2500!
@@LowEndLobster I’ll send you an IM on the ‘gram...(is IM still a thing? Or is it DM now...? Is there a difference or just the copy-written name?)
@@dupajas4671 I don't know ahahaha, send away my friend! I'll be there :D
smart move bass is awesome
Thanks stotts!
Just got one in Blue with maple fretboard... 8lbs 10 oz! Hurray for me!!
Congrats! Something must be in the air. I just filmed the full review :)
I follow them on fb, all of their basses are sooo beautiful
I love the sparkle finishes :O
Mazal tov on trying your first G&L! Great basses. The headstock looks a bit oversized to me. I really like the bridges on these things.
Thanks Sam! I dig the bridges too. Going to be checking out some Tributes at some point :)
@@LowEndLobster The Tributes are awesome, almost too close in quality to the USA versions.
Thanks for another great review! So this is a mix of P-Bass and Stingray with respect to the pickup position?
Hey Holger! It's definitely more on the P side in terms of pickup placement
I wish I had three hands so I could give three thumbs up!
Thanks Mike :)
Best sounding bass l ever owned was a G&L l hated the way it looked but it made my bad playing sound better, no string buzz I'm playing chords with just beautiful, I was having some money problems and I sold it to my friend and told him I was going to buy it back and before I could get it back yet already sold it one of the biggest mistakes of my life
This was Leo's best. A blend of single coil Pbass, split coil Pbass And a Stingray. All in one Bass.
I always like your accent when you say "let's check it out".
:D
Loving this bass, and can’t wait for the full review. The colour and grain remind me of my custom ‘Telenbacker’. What wood is it?
Thanks Rev! Body is swamp ash I believe.
Love the tone/ sound your getting with the l1000, what are you running it through, thanx for the cool vid
Thanks Erik! I'm playing through an Orange Crush 50 BXT (not my main amp but I use it for all videos) with the goal of delivering a true and unaltered example of what the bass would sound like through an everyday amp rig.
Excellent review,😊 Liverpool UK
Thank you Paul!
Nice tone 💪💙
Thank you Ej!
That's gorgeous,Lobby,at times it gets that MM sound?
Thank you Floyd! Not so much, more of a P-bass but "more".
Nice bass 👍
Thanks :D
Would love to see a video comparing a G&L Tribute L2000 or Kiloton and a Ray34HH? Just curious how the fit and finish and overall build quality compare? The Ray34 and L2000 tribute are both in that same price range, just curious what's the best bang for your buck!
Matt, EXCELLENT IDEA! The L2k vs the 34HH would be a great comparison! Thank you for the suggestion!
Its Funny Lobster , I've have G&L for years , never had a music man . Today I'm looking at probably going to buy a Sterling Ray 34 .
I had one in Blue with Maple neck back in 1982 great bass, i Traded a Rickenbacker 4001 for it
Nice! Wonder what it would sound like with flats?
That's a great question... Some flats just came in today ;)
I thought I wanted a jazz.. but this thing makes one of those look like a freakin toy haha wow incredible.
Thanks! Yeah, these L1000's are BEASTLY. I just shot the full review yesterday. They're very special instruments and the electronics are super innovative even by today's standards. A two band passive EQ (cut only) with no battery!
Nice video and great bass. P on steroids 😃? I quite like it.
Grazi Gianluigi! Ciao :)
Hey Lobster, great videos, great channel. Lovely cat 😄
That’s a cool one!!
Thanks dude!
This is the only G&L that I would like to own . Well unless they bring back the El Toro!🙏🏾
Thanks LaTonya! I LOVE the El Toro, wish they'd do a reissue.
I adore my US JB2. I’ve owned a handful of Fender J basses from different eras,
really appreciate the jb2’s smaller body, and great sound.
This thing is a beauty!
Thank you Thiago!
I had an original L-1000 back in 1986. It was a great bass.
Nice! I'm excited for this bass not only to deep dive into it, but also look at the similarities and evolution of Leo's designs with my Sabre and Stingray classics.
@@LowEndLobster you should have a great time. I sure wish that G&L had given the Kiloton the electronics at the L-1000.
this bass is handsome, i dont know if thats a weird way of looking at it.
Thanks Ricardo! Nah handsome is appropriate, thank you!
@@LowEndLobster my mim pbass is cool but theres something about it i dont like, i cant put my finger on it. Been looking at possibke upgrades but i think im just gonna end up selling it and getting something else. These g&l models are def in my radar now!
@@ricardobass4831 if you can afford the u.s. made version go for it. It is about as good as a handmade instrument can be at that price point.
But even the Indonesian made Tributes are great basses.... Perhaps even too nice for their price point.
@@longdongbongchong there are some random USA pbass models on reverb for under 1k, check it out
Looks very nice. What really interests me, are there basses with a large distance between the strings and with a lot of space for slapping?
Thank you! I think most 4 stringers hover around 18-19mm spacing. That's where I'm comfy personally. I think the Ibanez BTB 4 string used to have 20mm spacing too (and 35" scale).
I’m interested in it’s pickup. Thanks! 😎
After watching your 2 or 3 vids spotlighting the L-1000.....I just ordered one about an hour ago (in Blueburst).....way more bass than I was going to get, originally....but hey...if you do it, and do it right, maybe you'll only have to do it once.....right? ;-)
Congrats!
nice bass, liked
Thanks Gustavo :)
Wow, you totally hurt my feelings with your G&L headstock slam. 😂😂😂
I gotta keep it real ;P
You should definitely try the Kiloton!
Looking into snagging some Tributes- Kiloton and Fallout :)
@@LowEndLobster Fallout isn't available as Tribute version, AFAIK
I like it..it's like a P ray....I also like the glossy fretboard ..... and the burp riff @ 9:24🤣🤣🤣
Could you do a review of the Yamaha TRBX304? I have one, and I have only been playing for a year and a half but I really like mine. PS- The natural finish is great on that G&L.
Thanks Froge! Yes, I'll be checking some Yammys at some point :)
nice bsss. l fancy the fools gold colour.
Thanks Nigel! I too dig that, I just wish they came with maple boards. A personal pet peeve of mine is RW boards without color matched headstocks.
@@LowEndLobster i was thinking of getting one as a change from the usual fenders. You are a class player by the way. How the heck did you learn to play like that?
G&L uses treble and bass roll off.
Indeed! You put it much more eloquently than I did ;P
Nice review, and I agree about the bottle opener headstocks> yuck. I owned an original , ser# 0003...and I bought one of these which i quickly returned.; the frets were HUGE and not like the originals.
Thanks Doug! You know I hadn't really taken that close of a look, but you're right- the frets are YUGE 0_0.
There's no split coil mode. You've got parallel, single coil and OMG (basically series but with 0.1μf capacitor across one of the pickup coils, drastically cutting the high frequencies).
Thank you! Yeah I was trying to dig for the actual configs, I'll note this in the description and will be sure to have the right info for the full review :). I was a bit excited unboxing this ;P
@@LowEndLobster no problemo. Your L1000 is beautiful, I'm looking forward to the full review. I wanted to add one to my stable, now that they've come with the old school headstock and the metal control plate. It's a perfect adition for P and Stingray fans.
how would you describe the tone ? is it more like musicman ?
More P-bass than Music Man tone wise, but it has sprinkles of Stingray in there for sure.
Alas,a G&L in the armory. What thinkest thou??
I dig! I'm intrigued by the tone circuit and want to explore it more!
Damnit, now I want one.
;P
wooooo yeahh
OH YEAAAHHH!
