- Tower Escape Part 1 - this is the first TRUE reverse tower defense game I've ever seen. It's really creative and a lot of fun! My favorite part of PvP tower defense is rushing, so it's nice to have a game that's entirely that... though I also wish it were PvP.

This actually exists, it's a pretty obscure minigame on plants vs zombies console edition (PS3 at least has it) it's very interesting!

There actually is a game where you just control a single bloon which you can upgrade in between rounds, so you start as a red bloon and can upgrade to MOAB class. Idr what it's called but Dangerously Funny made a video on that last week
you either die a monkey or live long enough to see yourself become a Bloon

I remember in the og PvZ they had a mode like this and it was always my favorite, love this game so far :)
Hot take: I zombi is the best mode in all of PVZ and it not being in 2 is a disgrace. It's so fun!

from what i can tell, the key to success in this game is staging all your high hp units to come out first and sequentially relieve each other by incrementing speed as you go on. The goal is to have as many units as possible go through each tower at the same time, minimizing the time you're exposed to dps - having two distinct groups just doubles the total amount of damage you take
you don't gain much by having your first unit have all the speed and hp because by the time he's blasted off through the level, bringing exactly one item with him, all your squishy units have to take the full impact because there's nobody to draw aggro
not to backseat or anything but it seems like optimizing your stats to cause as much stacking of your units as possible is more important to maximizing survival numbers than just getting your unit numbers as high as possible, although that is also certainly necessary
Some "towers" do AoE damage, which punishes stacked groups.
Yeah true and also putting a unit that heavily specializes in being near other units in front of everything else definitely isn’t the play.
The idea behind this game is really interesting. I love when people take a standard game formula (tower defense) and just flip it on its head. City building game? How about instead we make a city destruction game instead! It allows for such a different game, that still seems familiar.
Wait, isn't the reverse of that being a citizen in city sims game but you have to survive the chaos of that is the 'player'?

@@parmflace that's true, I didn't even think of that one haha. That's another reason this works so well, because you can take many different aspects of a game and then change it up. For tower defense you could also make a game where you're one single character in a group of others and you manually control that one character, could even be an fps game or something. Like the Bloons fps game, you play as one of the monkeys in an fps environment. It's all really fresh but still built off of a proven game concept

He recently started a patreon and if I remember correctly the reason was mostly so he could pay his editors more. Ever since then the editing on all of the videos has been top tier.

Also having to be online is one more problem
I've played a somewhat similar game (non roguelite) a couple of years ago and I found the concept to be very intriguing
It always bummed me out that there are barely any other "tower attack" games, so I'm glad this game exists
Villainous! I'm 100% sure that's the game you played
I have no proof, as there are a bunch of reverse-tower defense, but Villainous is the one that I enjoyed the most and immediately comes to mind
The video title just makes me think of the old flash game Anti-TD where you'd send machines of increasing cost and differing stats to get past the computer who would place towers periodically to try and stop you

This looks like a really fun game and right up your alley, I’d love to see more of it. Also, it could be the fact that it’s 2 AM right now but Dan absolutely killed it on this video. YOOO! Tower Escape!!! I took part in the jam when this was first made! I knew it had success, I was following its development since then, but I never expect Aliensrock to play it! I love it when small jam games manage to become this much of a success

I swear I've seen this before a couple years ago. Maybe I saw the alpha. But definitely saw almost exactly this where you sent an army of monsters to dodge the normal towers on a path. Or I dreamt this in a fever. But still fun style.
Enjoyed this quite a bit, would love to see more. Also, props to the editor, they usually do a good job but they did a great job this time.

That remembered me of a game called Empire of sand, it was a kingdom rush like tower defense game where you went 1v1 against an opponent and could send troops which could also be upgraded in order to penetrate the opponents defense

I've watched so many gameplays of this game lately, I'm almost buying it 😅
One similar idea I've had is one where the enemies can counterattack your towers, so it's not just set it up and they'll always do something, the towers take damage and need to be repaired or replaced, you have to keep enemy ranges in mind when placing towers, you can have a literal glass cannon tower that's got a lot of power and range but low HP so keep it away from enemies.
this game actually looks pretty good. would be better if there was multiplayer versus, like you mentioned, but I could still see a short series on this one

There was a flash game that I used to play called Villainous, which plays a lot like this but with an entirely different theme and they do the whole level design and upgrade system instead of being a rouge lite.

there was a reverse tower defense that I used to play a very long time ago on Kongregate, which was similar to this. Ive long forgotten the name of it though

Loved the video. I think it'd be easier to follow if you used 2x speed instead of 3x. as it was I couldn't keep track of basically anything in the run. still a fun game that I hope to see more of!
