Alpine Linux is built around musl libc and busybox. This makes it smaller and more resource efficient than traditional GNU/Linux distributions. A container requires no more than 8 MB and a minimal installation to disk requires around 130 MB of storage. Not only do you get a fully-fledged Linux environment but a large selection of packages from the repository.
Binary packages are thinned out and split, giving you even more control over what you install, which in turn keeps your environment as small and efficient as possible.

1:98 This is the iso for installing from internet (like debian's netinst). I preffer the 'extended' iso, which gives way to do a setup without internet connection.

IN-ter-estin..yeah first time playing around with Alpine install on KVM. Missing some icons but it's working. Alpine's size & speed really has potential. Wonder if there's a media player project someplace?

Damn I missed this, a full year ago. Screen resolution is small for my taste. Glad to see this below radar distro is being looked at. Not used to using openrc. Looking at devaun linux. Using virtual box to play with to navigate or explore it. Definitely going to explore alternative distros. Alpine on the list as well.
Lived about 3 month on Alpine, overall great experience.
Used it with dwm, firefox worked, java (and minecraft worked) I've also decided to go with plan9port and switch from dwm to rio.
Can't say it was easy and interface of bot dwm and rio are just a little not my cup of tea, but it worked, and did so well.
The deciding part of switching from it was that uni required to run some windows app and I tried to use plain qemu (because virt-manager was not built for it) but it didn't quite work out for me, so I had to change distro.
Now they seems to have a GNOME desktop version test and that's great news, as much as GNOME is javascript bloat, it looks quite cool IMO.
Of course not without a few hiccups with wifi, I resorted to use NetworkManager and it was buggy and didn't want to connect to my weird uni wifi.

Lutris itself would work on Alpine because it is a Python 3 application, however WINE wouldn't work sadly...
nor does Steam and for one simple reason - no multilib.
Not sure if it is limitation of musl or supporting it isn't in scope of the project, but it doesn't work.
Perhaps both steam and wine both can run on a 32bit version of alpine, however most people probably don't want to use that (but it can run on a 64bit system)
@@zyan983 umm, i think wine is 64bit version only, and you theoretically can run 64 bit apps on it, but most windows programs require both 32bit and 64 bit

thanks for the quick tut, however, when I do apk add alpine-desktop, it says unsatisfiable constraints. alpine-desktop (missing): required by: world[alpine-desktop].
Any suggestions? Searched the web already!

For example,
$ apk search vim
Then add the apk by,
$ apk add vim

Everything went as planned except for the fact that i cannot see any thumbnails or icons. The Desktop icons, icons inside the file manager or any icons for that matter. What can i do to fix that?
sorry if this is dumb, im really a linux noob, but this worked perfectly up to when you say to run "apk add alpine-desktop", I dont have any package called "alpine-desktop", and therfore I cant add it obviously lol. what do you think the problem might be

type wlan0 if you see it
then you should see the name of your wifi

Install dbus and update dbus with openrc run level
