Honestly? This episode made me hate that this is the final season. Burnham communicating orders to Reyner through references to Kellurun stories and fables is absolutely genius and it only makes me realize after the fact how robbed we were of more of that in future seasons.

My favorite parts of this episode is the Saru and T'Rina scenes, especially when Saru give T'Rina flowers, and when they hug, I giggled in both those scenes. And don't worry, they won't killed Saru, his wedding with T'Rina will be the ending at the final episode.

I think it's bothering me that the Starfleet characters haven't seemed to consider whether they are actually ready for the technology. Could any society really claim to be ready to play god? The very fact that they are fighting over it with the Breen and Moll proves the galaxy isn't ready. Honestly, even if they do have to team up at the end.

The Breen want to use it for conquest, the Federation, while tempted by the possibilities, seems to me like they just want to lock it away so no one can touch it at all. The Federation’s worthiness has been mostly been analyzed through Michael herself and her personal worthiness symbolically standing in for the rest of the Federation, at least that’s how I see it

14:45 this has been kinda my issue with Moll the entire season. I like her for the most part but she’s CONSTANTLY the “aggressive doesn’t need anybody girlboss villain” and she feels like this archetype just being itself and refusing to step out of itself, which is annoying when L’ak has been right there most of the time being so much deeper than this character who is just resent and love channeled through anger that feels exactly like her resentment

Good call on the time dilation that should've happened near the black holes. My biggest beef is that the Breen are just "Klingon light" and nothing more. The weird conversations that happen when they're under a time constraint seems to happen A LOT. The only thing I did like was Discovery crashing into the Breen ship like a kid playing with Star Trek toys. That's always satisfying.

One of the unintentional messages I loved about this episode was that having to hide who you are from everybody else is literally a security risk. If the Breen were able to take off their helmets, none of the tactics the Discovery crew implemented would have worked.

I loved the heist vibes in this episode - everything from the detailed run-down of the plan, down to the plan all going awry at the last second.
I hated the flanderization of the Breen here, turning them into Imperial stormtroopers, more an object for comedic relief than anything. That they allow Moll, 30something alien woman acting like a sullen teenager, to order them around does nothing to help either.
I know that the B plot was intimating that Saru would face down against a different primarch who had a much larger fleet, but I have a very, very difficult time believing that an enemy introduced in the 11th hour (or 10th episode, as it were) will mean anything with only ten minutes of screen time.

I really hope they don't require all the species to work together in order to get the progenitor tech, because that would directly contradict all the tests before that which were designed to single out a *person* who was worthy... The whole Moll and Lok storyline has been annoying . The season was constantly finding ways to inject these characters into the story and most of the time it has been incredibly cliche. With Lok being the "chosen one" who of course will solve everything with the Breen once he gets resurrected. 🙄

"Time dilation" doesn't set in until you're far enough in the gravity well that spacetime is affected to a significant degree. Discovery was at the edge of th accretion disk, that's not close enough
I put the " there because gravity _always_ dilate time. In fact, gravity itself can be described as a movement due to differentials in spacetime warping(don't worry about it)
Your feet are younger than your head because they're closer to the gravity well. But the effect is very, very slight. To have the effect commonly referred as time dilation, you have to go very fast or very close to the dark star, close to the event horizon

very sad we only got one more episode of discovery. I was never a star trek fan until i watched the first episode of season 1 of disco. If it wasn't for discovery, i would have never watched Yoyager, DS9, TNG, or consider myself a Trekkie. Out of all the characters, Zora is going to be the one that will always come to mind where i wish we got to see more development, plus i was hoping we would get some answers to the short trek calypso. IT would have been nice if PAramount greenlit a movie to end discovery the right way and give a chance to answer any story lines left open. Now that i have watched 3 other star trek series i can admit the Crossfield Class Design is my fav starship design.

I feel like the whole point of them getting stuck in the black holes was supposed to be to delay them just enough for the Breen to come and grab the artifact before they could but they then, for some reason, ended up shooting it so badly that it just seemed like they were idiots chatting for 5 minutes when they all knew they were on a time crunch. Besides that I did enjoy the whole heist mission and this was a decent set up episode for the finale.

  • @susansokoloski2233

Time sliws down upon entering the event horizon, which they did not do. The gravitational effects of black holes expands beyond the event horizon, hence oribiting objects, solar systems and binary black holes...the same as binary stars. It is exactly how solar systems form. As for this situation, the ship was damaged and being affected by the gravitational pull of one of the binary black holes. The movement towards the LaGrange point (which is actually a region) makes perfect sense, astro physically speaking. So, you overthought the actual physics there.
    Great review, as always! 👏👏👏🖖

I don't have a lot of off-handed thoughts about this episode (which I did watch back-to-back with the finale before watching this review - definitely have a lot more thoughts about the finale), but most of them are summed up in the non-spoiler intro. It was a fine enough episode, but far from great, mostly just there to move a few pieces into place for the finale.
I do agree about the contrived aspect of the opening action beat (though I don't remember particular times being given before that, so maybe the physics issue is just an unspoken aspect of what happened next), and the turn leading into the meat of this episode was definitely eye-rolling. The mission did underwhelm a bit for me, but hit a lot of the standard beats/tropes for that type of story. I did like the Book/Burnham conversation - I often have issues of "why are you talking about this on the mission/right now" in some shows (Disco has definitely had this problem) but that often stems from it distracting from/preventing them from doing the thing they need to focus on, whereas it didn't seem to do so this time (after all, they had to walk to a place and could eye things while there, anyway), so I didn't mind. Rayner has been solid this season, gets a couple decent beats in this, especially at the very end. Moll character-wise has suffered since L'ak's death, feels like the writers can't figure out who/what they want her to be, doesn't quite align with the character they had written the rest of the season (I get she's supposed to be the grief-stricken widow driven to do anything to bring back her lost love, but she's really shifted, feels like certain things that would've angered her/made her more distrusting of the Federation and Disco crew earlier in the season were re-written and not reflected here).
Final random thoughts: oh, so did Owo & Detmer just get dropped from the show in a toss-away 2-line exchange earlier in the season? That angers me probably more than it should, really highlights how this show just never really cared about a lot of these side characters, even as it tries to claim the Disco crew (especially bridge crew+Stamets+Adira+Culber) are a tight family.

In defense of Moll: for me, Moll is a refreshingly strong and unusual antagonist in that she is deeply, desperately motivated by LOVE for L'ak. Where have we seen this outside of Shakespeare? Why should she listen to Rayner or Michael about some "deal" with an organization she does not trust? Discovery has been woefully bad at writing villains--Osyraa? Tarka? urgh. Moll is not "moustache-twirling" and she does not do what we want her to do. Finally, a fascinating antagonist who is played in a beautifully understated way by Eve Harlow.

  • @sonicsean34

The problem with the season is there is no real difference between a version where it’s only 3 key items vs 5 beyond 5 takes up more episode time.
Almost none of the tests have been more than an inconvenience and we haven’t learnt much about the progenitors to build up the story (kinda feels like nothing has happened this year after the first couple eps)
Heck barely anything happens this week and we coulda found the portal on a planet at the start and have it suck in Moll and Michael and jump-start to where next week will start and have more time for the actual main story
Also, the whole artefact is kinda confused. Ostensibly it sounded like it was made by the C24th scientists to contain the progenitor knowledge but also seemed to be far more advanced than what those 5 ppl would have had access to in that time period. It's like the writers hadn't fully settled on whether the space object was proven tech or if the tech was only inside Federation tech when they filmed it

not to nitpick the show too much, but we need to talk about Burnham's hair. She has these glorious braids that are like 3 feet long. When she's in the breen disguise, her braids disappear, until the scene where she takes the helmet off, when they are suddenly hanging out the back of the helmet before she turns her helmet off.
as soon as it was mentioned that Michael was going to be infiltrating the breen ship, i started wondering about her hair. was she gonna have it all shoved up in her helmet? was she gonna cut it and then re-grow it using technology? turns out it just disappeared until the scene where she takes the helmet off.
does she have a hair cloak? i would accept that explaination, cause itd be a cool little piece of star trek tech

I was just recommended a 5-year-old video from Steve Shives where he talked about how DISCO was still canon, and he brought up the Kelvin Timeline. That got me thinking...
We have the Prime Timeline, the Mirror Universe, and the Kelvin Timeline. Wouldn't the Mirror Universe have its own version of the Kelvin Timeline? If so, how would it differ from the three other "Universes" that we're familiar with (in your opinion)?
Are the people in the Mirror Kelvin Universe still be horny bisexuals? Would there still be a Klingon/Cardassian Alliance? If everyone in the Mirror Kelvin Universe is a horny bisexual, what would that say about Kirk and Will Riker (and their sexuality)? If Riker is a horny bisexual, would he still have married Troi and had Thad and Kestra? What would happen to Geordi's kids? How would things be different in the Mirror Kelvin Universe compared to the three different universes we know?

Look, Jessie, if you start to acknowledge time dilation in Star Trek, it is a SLIPPERY slope to madness. At the speeds our Starfleet heroes travel, there should be life-ruining skips forward in time happening every DAY! Every time they visit Earth, all of their friends and family should be LONG dead! Running the Federation with any sort of efficiency would be logistically crazymaking to the point of NIGHTMARE! Every day, I get down on my KNEES and thank the Progenitors that Star Trek doesn't give a single flying freak about time dilation.
And black holes? Fuggeddaboutit. You put me on a spaceship, I'm not going within ten light years of one. But Starfleet recently? Ever since that first image of a black hole came out back in 2019 and it captured all our imaginations? They're SWIMMIN' in the damn things! Pike practically dipped the Enterprise in one like a fry in ketchup to escape the Gorn that one time! And I say LET 'EM! They'll get what's coming to 'em in the end!

In theory, they could counteract any temporal effects from the black holes using their warp field - but if we're going to see two black holes, and we're going to establish that they're not using their warp drive (for whatever reason) then what's the point if not to give us the time dilation? I don't know why they bothered adding primordial black holes, since they didn't end up mattering. I was expecting the titular lagrange point to be spot "frozen in time" or something, where the sixth scientist (presumably the human Easter egg) was frozen at the moment of their "death" 800 years ago. But NOPE, the black holes were just set dressing. It was a heist episode instead. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s quite well documented now that Doug Jones was busy promoting a movie and working on a movie during most of the shooting for this season, and that very few people on the creative team knew that they were shooting the finale when they were shooting the finale. We know no one is actually going to be truly happy by the fact that this is the last two episodes and Doug Jones was not in the show. Nobody knew at the time that it was the end. So can we please just move on and evaluate the episode itself?

Viewers have every right to ask where Saru is. The showrunners are such complete amateurs that they failed to ensure that one of their series leads was locked into a contract in which the actor prioritizes his commitment to a long running series. Either contractually tie him down, bring in a replacement or end the character's arc. Twenty producers named in the opening credits and not one of them has a clue. The last episode will feel like a mercy kill.

The Progenitors don't come from The Chase, they come from The Paradise Syndrome, the one where Kirk (Kirak!) spends a few months living in Big Bear and marries a Native American while Spock tries to stop an asteroid. Discovery validates the fan speculation that The Chase aliens are the Progenitors discussed in that TOS episode.
I sadly have to agree with te haters on this one -- this is a waste of a penultimate episode. The character development is marginal (a pinch for Adira and for Raynor and Tilly) with most effort spent on action and heist story that does only exactly what you already inow it has to do for the season arc to chonk forward mechanically. This season has had a few really solid episodes like the unstuck-in-time Face the Strange, the tower racing Whistlespeak, and the library quest Labyrinths, but for the most part its spent time on extremely mechanical mcguffin steps and diverted much of its character development to single-season villains that don't substantively impact the broader Trek status quo. Discovery deserves better in general, and certainly deserved a better final season -- I wish they were getting their appropriate "last two" seasons. I'm happy for those who are enjoying the season; I've never been a fan of the Indy films either, or the broader style, really.
Prediction: the climax will be them receiving a dragon ball wish, using it to revive La'k, he will take over the Breen Confederacy and then make peace with the Federation. Cue wedding (unless Saru is killed buying them time).

Character development..but you know different generations have different pacing. Some are always short sighted. Can't wait for the past fan generation to die off like TOS fans faded with their hate for TNG, TNG fans with their hate for DS9, and so on. You know as it happens with Doctor Who, BSG...etc.
So I give your hate about 2 to 3 years to be relevant and then Discovery too will be revered by it's generation.

In my humble opinion as a young viewer, Discovery has been an empty carriage making a lot of noise with very little content inside. the episodes and characters are just means to an end, the discovery itself became a mere plot device just carrying people and cargo faster than anyone. Overall it's a mess and for me, it's not memorable at all.

This was such a nothing episode for me tbh.
Except for a couple of character beats, just like with the other mechanistic episodes, this was by-the-numbers stormtrooper disguise etc etc. Then the back half felt dead af as you could tell they were stalling about leaping-into the portal for the next episode. A couple other episodes felt like they were just shuffling the pieces into place, but they didn't stall for the back half so obviously.
Really feels like a wasted opportunity for the final season.
I also didn't like how they lampshaded the first officer guy not sitting in the chair. Especially because Burnham asked him why he didn't do it in an earlier episode, but mainly because we'd seen him nervously hovering-around the chair for the whole season. We should've just had him sit in it at the end without the lampshading at the start imo. That feels like it's underestimating the viewership.

I didn't love the infiltration storyline. All of the characters seemed ill-equiped to navigate Breen society. When everyone wears suits and helmets, there must be some subtle ways to identify rank and position within that society, that was all glossed over. (yes, Burnham did change her suit to appear as a member of the science faction, but again, I'd think that would be more obvious to people who's identities are ties to their suits). I also didn't buy Adira telling the shield console Breen "there's a problem with your console, go away...That's an order". If some random engineer tried that on the bridge of Discovery, it would be noticed and questioned. Same goes for Burnham and what she was trying to do in the shuttle bay. Also, while it was cute to have Book hitting on the male Breen, does he know enough about their society to know that isn't a social no-no? I'm sure not every society even in the 31st century is ok with same sex romance. I get that some of it was played for laughs, but the tone seemed off considering the stakes.

Don’t really care for this season tbh. There are some good highs but the lows are pretty striking. It’s really hard to explain but it just doesn’t feel cohesive and some of the relationships with the crew that aren’t the main players seems so forced…it feels like the showrunners were like “SEE Michael has a bond with the crew and the crew love each other…you know…the crew member… sure you can’t even remember their names but you’re supposed to care for them TOO!!!” Like this show would have greatly benefited if they had episodes that didn’t always revolve around Burnam and I like Burnam a good deal.

You know? I've been watching Discovery since it first aired and let me tell you that the last problem of the show are the "wokness" critics from the haters. The show simply lacks of consistent writing and many of the episodes are just a bunch of things happening only to keep the "mystery" going untill the last episode and if you watch the recap of the previous episodes in the season finale you basically know everything you need. For me this series has been a big letdown and it's a shame because many concepts and characters are interesting but they decided to do nothing about them.

@@DoctorMysterio15 I couldn't disagree more, I am not defending Discovery as perfect but if you think any Star Trek series was consistently good this early into it's run.... well maybe DS9 hits those numbers but honestly DS9 still gets overhyped a little bit, it definitely has huge misses in its early seasons.
Discovery *proved* Star Trek was still relevant and provided the capacity for fans to push writers constrained by the typical tv show industry pressures into making stories that run closer to the original star trek vibe. Discovery also proved though that Star Trek doesn't need to be handled delicately as an object of nostalgia, it is still very much alive and evolving. You *have* to respect Discovery for that as a Star Trek fan even if you don't like that.
Personally though, I love Discovery for all it's faults. I also love it has a black woman for a captain, same with Lower Decks.

@@tylerbrown9797 As sympathetic and charming as the traits of the show are, I'm a little tired of the "big epic arc" that ends up drawing attention and screen time for proper development of the characters and the universe they are living in. So far all the "challenges" have been solved like minor inconviniences. That is when the clues don't drop on their hands like that android collector with all the data they needed. That was an early red flag and for me this season is just as good as the arc of the burn was (and we know how poorly that was received).
And yes, at least this show stopped treating the franchise like a fragile relic, but with all we got in the end, Disco would be much better as it's own show separated from the franchise. Don't get me wrong, it's still better than Picard, but it seems that only SNW and LD got it right so far.

I’ve always given Discovery the opportunity to turn stuff around, however the show continues to disappoint at every turn, hopefully the budget and resources given its cancellation go to towards a better Trek project.

You’re bothered by the time wasted in the conversation they have about the tech thing not being what they expected yet you’re totally fine with the multiple other times everything comes to a halt for a whispery heart to heart. Culber interrupts Stamets while he’s calculating how to get the away teams onto the Breen ship. Then they slow down everything to have a chat with Adira on the way to the shuttle. Then Suru and the Vulcan president (I’ll never remember her name, sorry) have a long conversation when he should be leaving to intercept the other Breen ship. Then Book and Burnham stop everything to hash out their relationship. And every 5 minutes every character has to stop and praise Adira for some smart thinking.
