    Growing in excess heat is possible. I live in part of Australia that reaches 50°c/125°f in summer. I grow heat sensitive plants in the same patch and cover with shade cloth once the temperature hits 95f. On the upside, I grow food all year round. I can grow tomatoes from September through May/June

    Great video. I had success watering a half hour from elevated sprinklers at about 8 feet high at sundown and at sunrise every other day and some times once on the day off depending on the looks of them. I had red lettuce and cabbage (

    Kudos Roman. great job. I did lettuce and arugula this summer, kept it on area of more shade it worked. Had the aphid problem on the squash/zucchini as well. It is a learning lesson but excited for fall. Would love to see more in the future.. All the Best

    I live south of Tucson, and I MUST use shade in the summer. I know you get a little militant about shade, but it's a vital tool that I find necessary. Also, it saves on fresh water use in my irrigation system.

    John have been to the Queen Creek Olive Mill in Queen Creek Arizona? It's southeast of Mesa. They grow all their own olives and have their own olive processing plant. If you're ever in the area, stop by. They make all kinds of foods and specialty froducts with olives and oil. Free samples! The olives soak up this heat and thrive!

      OddlerProd, where are you moving from? And what factors make you want to move to Las Vegas? I'm looking to move south from Chicago, but I'm not sure where yet. I just want to avoid the winters we have. I'm thinking possibly Jacksonville, Florida, because of their average lows and high temperature, rainfall, sunny days and population size. The next thing I'm doing is looking into the culture of people that live there.

      Wood chip mulching, shade cloth, ollas, rain barrels/ rain chains and drip hose irrigation are commonly used by most gardeners out here in the desert. Most desert gardeners compost in a tumbler like the Joraform. The spring and fall months are the best gardening seasons and seeds and starters for the summer are normally planted in July when the monsoon arrives. The winter months are cool and sunny with some freezing cold nights from December to January. The soil somewhat varies from very sandy and fragile to heavy caliche clay with lots of rocks (a pickaxe might be necessary) and it's mostly very alkaline. There is a cool seed company called Native Seed Search in Tucson, Az that sells rare and native southwestern crop seeds. And one more thing, be careful what you plant and grow in the hottest months, both June and August.

    Great to see this here in Vegas. I noticed he has a aphid problem. Actually he has an Argentine ant problem. I fought those guys organically for years with no results. Finally this spring i hired a pest control company to kill the ants. We did it in a way that only used traps at each trail away from the garden. I wished I had done this years ago.. Now the garden is back in balance.- all the beneficial insects are back- mantis', bees, lady bugs, even the lizards and birds are back. I have had no aphids, no hornworms, even the squash bugs are controlled. A few more caterpillars and leaf worms but ill take those over aphids.
    Invasive species need to be eliminated to get the naturals back.

    • @DeerParkFarmstead
      @DeerParkFarmstead 7 років тому +1

      William P Hall the ant problem isn't that bad and can be controlled. I have a lot of hummingbirds. I saw a huge lizard yesterday. Several species of dragonfly. My sunflowers are blooming and bringing in bees. Many beneficial. Keep in mind that this I am in my first year so things take time to build.

    For the aphids and other pests... is there any truth to vinegar helping at all... or a garlic mixture? That's organic, right? I just want to hear it from a pro. Pinterest has a ton of myths, you see.
