nearly 4 months to grow iceberg lettuce. thats crazy didnt realise how long it took !. good on you for having the patience to grow it and share the video :-)
You're telling me! I thought, hey lemme try that and after seeing how long the process was... was like hard-pass. Tiny little heads of lettuce as well and just not worth waiting 4 months between harvesting.
This is amazing! I never thought about iceberg lettuce growing similar to cabbage. It's cool to see how it's grown and how long it takes. Doesn't seem like any pest pressure with it either. Maybe I should try growing some soon...thanks for the idea! 😁👍
There were few caterpillars, but I managed to hand-pick them early. You should definitely give it a try, these are so tasty. Thank you very much for watching and support! 🙂👍
crying ,, thank you for sharing this ,, having more appreciation for iceberg lettuce we eat ,, your iceberg lettuce looks so yum & crunchy ,, now we are hungry & cry again lol
Amazing video...but behind scenes, I'm sure, hard work, daily watering, checking how plants doing....you must be totally dedicated. Thank you for sharing. All the best in futures videos.
Thank you so much for this video! I am trying to grow iceberg lettuce for the first time this year and didn't know if I did it wrong or if the progress was just slower than expected
It grows kind of slow until it starts to form a head, then the progress is more visible. Thank you very much for watching and taking time to leave a comment, I am happy you found the video helpful! Good luck growing your iceberg lettuce 🍀🙂
Can pruning the outer leaves be used for salad as the plant grows bigger? Then only take the inner leaves as needed for those nice crunchy sandwiches? Also, if pruned this way, could the plant keep growing if the inner iceberg is left to grow more leaves?
Hello, You can treat iceberg lettuce as a "cut and come again" plant, but it will most likely never grow full head. I'd say it's better to plant them regulary by few with a week difference. So You always have some to harvest.
Been so disappointed at the lettuce I'm finding at my local grocery store and can't afford $6 for the small organic iceberg lettuce sold at the little market i live close to. I really want to try to grow my own next spring. I live in Indianapolis, IN, when should I start my seedlings?
Hello, when the plants are small they don't drink much, but when the heads start to form the soil needs to be constantly moist. It's hard to say how often as it depends on the growing conditions, so I suggest You check the top 1.5cm (1/2in) of the soil, if it's dry, it's time to water them. If You are going to use fertilizer of any kind, I suggest You stop using it once the heads start to grow, as excess nitrogen can cause them to rot. Thank You very much! I am very happy You like the video! ☺
After harvesting head lettuce, it will grow some leaves (assuming You let enough of the stem in the soil), but it won't form another head like the first time.
First time I planted icebergs. Mine now are just growing out of the soil saying hi to me☺. Do we have to keep changing the pot or we can keep them grow in the same spot?
Hello. Well, yes You can eat them, but plant will never form the firm crispy head, because You'll allways take the outer leaves. A leaf here and there won't hurt it that much, but I would rather grow leaf varieties of lettuce for regular harvesting.
Hello. Well You can grow them at whatever scale would be worth for You 🙂 in the same 4 months, You can grow one or one hundred of them. There are also some earlier lettuce varieties. Thank You very much 😊🍀
The old stalk may grow some side shoots (if left enough of it), but it will take a long time and it won't form another head like the first one. The best thing You can do is to heavy young plants ready and transplant them right after You harvest the older ones. Well, ideally every single seed should grow into a lettuce, but some seeds fail to germinate. So it's better so sow more of them and prick them out.
They absolutely can! Some of the lower ones may not be top tier quality, but they are edible. I just wanted to show the very head that You can see in grocery store 🙂
Hello, no these are just around 20cm (8") deep. You can try 15cm (6"), but I think they will get rootbound and maybe don't reach decent head size. Though, I've never grown head lettuce in smaller pots like these.
Hello, that depends on what climate are You going to grow these in. Iceberg lettuce is pretty resistant to bolting (more than butterhead lettuce), but it will still grow better in mild temperatures. Especially when forming head. It's a cool weather crop (around 15°C /65°F/).
Hello, yes we ate them. Well most of them, as the very bottom ones use to be lower quality due to the plants growing upwards and therefore putting more nutrients into their upper parts, where is much more photosynthesis going on ☘☀ I just wanted to show the process of growing these plants from seed to lettuce heads we know from market and maybe encourage someone to grow it at home, even in containers 🙂
Hello, too much nitrogen can cause this. If you are fertilizing during head formation, I'd suggest you try not to do that and see if that fixes Your problem. This worked for me with radicchio.
Hello blogger, can I give you a suggestion? Your video is shot beautifully (it is recommended that you make the subtitles smaller) which affects the viewing experience. Or suggest you use youtube subtitles. love your planting videos❤❤❤
Hello, of course you can! I will try to make them smaller for sure, thank you for your feedback! I have no editing or videomaking backround, so I really appreciate any suggestions and feedback. Thank you very much ❤
Yes, but give the plants some protection. I've got mine already growing in greenhouse, which has plenty of holes so it doesn't hold temperature in night, but covers from wind and snow/rain. They've survived -5℃ covered with light fleece (17g/m2), to create "micro climate".
Well, I suggest you start seeds 3 months prior to the time you'll be starving for some sandwich 😜 If you start growing vegetables when you are already starving, that might be too late 😉

@@ItsLindaMichelle That sounds great! I am sure you will find joy growing it!

Can you eat the lettuce leaves that are all around the bulb as it grows?
Yes, You can, but it is a head lettuce, so in order to create firm head You should let it grow and harvest when the head is formed.
So after harvesting, can you leave the stem so it can regrow infinitely?
Well, it may grow some side shoots, but it won’t form a head like the first one.
Can pruning the outer leaves be used for salad as the plant grows bigger? Then only take the inner leaves as needed for those nice crunchy sandwiches? Also, if pruned this way, could the plant keep growing if the inner iceberg is left to grow more leaves?

Hello. Early March would be the date to start seeds for late June harvest. 🌱🍀
@@Liap thank you!!
Nice video! Im a newbie and planning for next year. How much water do you give it and how often do you water the lettuce? Thanks!
Hello, when the plants are small they don't drink much, but when the heads start to form the soil needs to be constantly moist. It's hard to say how often as it depends on the growing conditions, so I suggest You check the top 1.5cm (1/2in) of the soil, if it's dry, it's time to water them.

such a great video! are the big outer leaves good to eat as well?
Yes absolutely! I just sorted them out, as the very bottom ones tend to be of lower qualitty.
Thank You very much ☺🍀
What do you do with outer leaves can you eat it or put in the compost.
Yes, they are absolutely edible. I sorted them out as lower leaves tend to be of lower quality.
My friend what fertilizer and Micronutriant you are giving to iceberg lettuce
Hello. Very little to none. Maybe some fish emulsion based fertilizer a week or two after transplanting, but I don't really fertilize it.
Im planning on planting one myself but I got a question.. after you cut the lettuce does it grow back again?
After harvesting head lettuce, it will grow some leaves (assuming You let enough of the stem in the soil), but it won't form another head like the first time.
@@Liapfollowup question. Does the regrown leaves edible?
@@rodjjell Hello. Yes, absolutely edible 🥬
Are those leaves that you take out before getting the middle part edible?
Yes, absolutely. I sorted them out. Some of the lower leaves are of lower qualitty, but most of them are perfectly fine.
Looks nice,,,,, They like a half shadow place. i grow mine under my trees in the garden, some variety gets sunburned
Do you discard the outer leaves?
Hello. Not all of them. I sorted them out. Some of those lower leaves tend to be of lower qualitty. They are all edible though.
@@Liap thanks 👍
First time I planted icebergs. Mine now are just growing out of the soil saying hi to me☺. Do we have to keep changing the pot or we can keep them grow in the same spot?
Hello. That’s great!
If the spot they are growing in gets brought sunlight, then You don’t have to move it around 🙂
@@Liap thanks
Can you still regrow the left cut lettuce?
If you let big enough stem in the soil, it will grow some side shoots. But it won’t grow the head like the first one.
@@Liap i will just buy another seedling. how much does a pack of seeds cost? thanks!
@@yumblum depends on seed company and the amount of seeds in the package. But lettuce seeds are generaly pretty low cost.
I want to know if u get 500 lettuce seeds and plant them would 500 lettuce grow?
If all of them germinate, yes 🌱🙂
How do you know when the seeds are mature enough to be transplanted without withering?
Hello. When the seedlings have 3-5 true leaves, they are ready for transplanting.
Whats left in the container, would that regrow or would you need to go through this whole process again for next batch?
Hello. If You let stem big enough in the soil, it may grow some side shoots, but it will take time and it won't form a head like the first one.
Will a new lettuce grow from the roots you have left in the pot?
Hello. If the stem is big enough, it will grow some side shoots, but it won’t grow another head like the first one.
Will they grow again after cutting or we have to plant a new one?
It won't form another head like the first one. Head lettuce can grow new leaves but they will not form a nice big lettuce head again.
Can you eat the leaves as the head is growing? Or will eating the leaves hurt the growth?
Hello. Well, yes You can eat them, but plant will never form the firm crispy head, because You'll allways take the outer leaves. A leaf here and there won't hurt it that much, but I would rather grow leaf varieties of lettuce for regular harvesting.
What do you do with the trimmings around the lettuce? You can eat that too right?
Yes. Just some of the lower ones my be of lower quality.
When you cut it off will one grow back in its place or is plant done?
Unfortunately, no. If You leave stem big enough in the soil, it will start to grow some leaves, but it won't grow the same head as the first one.
I appreciate the video and your patience. 4 months is way too much time and effort for a bulb I will use in two salads? Not for me.
Hello. Well You can grow them at whatever scale would be worth for You 🙂 in the same 4 months, You can grow one or one hundred of them. There are also some earlier lettuce varieties.
Thank You very much 😊🍀
IS IT QUICKER TO GROW ONE IF YOU USE AN OLD STALK,IF YOU USE SEED DOES EVERY SINGLE SEED GROW INTO A LETTUCE OR DO SOME FAIL
That's some fine lettuce
Thank You ☺️🍀
Does the root grow more or do you just compost it?
It will grow some side shoots. But it won't grow the same head like the first one. So yes, I compost it.
@@Liap Thank you.
The leaves you tear off. Can they not be used?
They absolutely can! Some of the lower ones may not be top tier quality, but they are edible. I just wanted to show the very head that You can see in grocery store 🙂
Always a pleasure.
Thank you 🙂
What about thos extra leaves that you removed before harvest ? Are those edible / can we use it somewhere ?
Hello. Yes, they are edible. I sorted them which are good to eat and some that were of lower qualitty went to compost pile.
What is the size of your container?
Hello. Those are 10l containers (2.6gal).
Does it need deep container to grow
Hello, no these are just around 20cm (8") deep. You can try 15cm (6"), but I think they will get rootbound and maybe don't reach decent head size. Though, I've never grown head lettuce in smaller pots like these.
Can you cut/use some of the outer leaves while it's growing?
Hello, if we are talking about a leaf here and there then yes, but harvesting too much will have a negative effect on forming a firm lettuce head.
Great video thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you very much 👍🙂
Can you eat the leaves that you pulled off ?
Yes, most of them were fine. Just the very bottom ones went to compost. As the lettuce matures, outer leaves tend to lose quality.
Well okay!! On the surface of things it looks very easy to do!!
Give it a try, you won't regret growing anything! 🙂🌱
