Duolingo has definitely been great for learning to read and write in Spanish but not so much for speaking for me.

I’m 92 days in Dualingo and I’m playing the free version. I don’t mind the free version. It doesn’t bother me if I have to keep practicing older lessons to gain my hearts back. And I know more Spanish than I did 92 days ago.

Duo is great. I learn Spanish since 7yrs and have 260k points.however, I am half through, the tree is huge and I need to do all the suggested repetition, so it takes a lot of time to move on in the tree. Anybody else in the same boat???

The weird sentences ( which are in the Arabic version too) are on purpose. It removes the possibility of “guessing” the answer from context. You have to really know the correct translation if the sentence isn’t predictable.
The paid version is very affordable at $6 a month plus Pimsleur doesn’t teach grammar or written language well.

Duolingo has been great for learning how to read and learn grammar. Pimsleur is great for getting a start on speaking the language in conversations. I am currently using it to learn Russian, but I also learned a bit of Ukrainian, as well. I used Pimsleur to learn a bit of Polish about 17 years ago, and I can still remember some of it (especially after a quick review). Duolingo really helped me to learn the Cyrillic alphabet used in Russian and Ukrainian. I can actually read a little bit now, which was my original motivation for learning Russian.

My reason for learning Spanish: my wife is ecuadorian American and many of her relatives do not speak English. I look forward to creating opportunities to connect with them. Additionally I look forward to traveling to Ecuador multiple times with her and being linguistically independent when in a Spanish speaking country!

I think some of the phrases that are grammatically correct but has a weird meaning are cool. When a phrase makes logical sense you tend to pay less attention to the grammar but when the meaning is strange you might pay a closer attention and if the grammar is correct you are sure that you have learnt that grammar correctly and this weird meaning was what it meant and it will stick to you

You can learn spanish really great with Duolingo but In order to speak it properly you need to speak it often during the day and become comfortable and confident with the pronunciation. You also need to listen to and read it. Not just in the app. If you don't do that. You'll never be fluent

Not bad for the basics. I am on my 70th consecutive day, lesson 34. And Duo's errors are cumulating. Sometimes the English equivalents are wobbly, but Spanish at times goes awry too, especially by rejecting alternative good answers. Worse, some exercises are repeating ad nauseam. Worst, progress is way too slow. Hard to stay concentrated. Time to your stuff AI tested. As for the free version, that is the one to take. In the paid version you can make as many errors as you need. Now that is about the worst sales pitch imaginable. I push myself not to make mistakes.

John, Duolingo has changed. I’m frustrated. I want to do challenge with others, they ask me and I do them and they don’t do any part of it. That’s ok, but I’m stuck in learning in Spanish. I don’t know how to ask others how to do challenges. Can you assist? Can you suggest something for a auditory learner.? Yes, I can read, but when I listen, I never miss a beat. Duolingo took away there stories, 1-4 in each exercise. In that part, I loved to hear correct pronunciation.. help 😊!

Thanks for watching! We are well aware of the major Duo update, and plan to release a few videos discussing it in January. While there are some serious negatives with it, there are a few pros as well (but mostly cons haha). Those vids will be out shortly.
To answer your other question - for auditory learners, you should definitely consider Rocket Languages and Pimsleur. Those are by far the best two apps for auditory learners with their audio-based lessons.

Duolingo is definitely a beginners app, teaches a few phrases which can help boost up your vocabulary. If your learning something like Japanese or Korean, they have a section where they teach you the alphabet/s of that language. Duolingo should not be used as the only resource or the main resource!

  • @SimRacingVeteran

I think user experience varies. I speak french and just started duo en español. Knowing french is definitely making learning Spanish easier. I also believe some people are just more apt at learning a language than others. Just like math is some people’s jam. Not my jam. I don’t math very well. I fair better in linguistics.

  • @kristiant96
    @kristiant96 Рік тому

It definitely helps me. But if you want to learn only through the app it will be difficult and it will take a long time. If you want to learn a new language on the side duo is definitely for you.

What is the concept of more robust? I started with Duolingo free. Ads drove me crazy interrupting memorization. I now use subscription. Upgrade if you can afford. Always review. Newer German and Spanish lessons include audio multiple choice audio to match to the German or English word. Because I am learning Spanish, I switch sometimes to learn Spanish from German or the opposite. Duolingo has lessons where you speak. But I used to avoid. Have I improved or has Duolingo become smarter?
No matter which app or even human you learn from, use other resources. For example, if you want to learn to discuss business or science or agriculture, you may not get that from one teacher.

I've been using Duolingo free version to review previous Spanish lauguage classes. I haven't tried the paid plans yet. I really haven't noticed the ads. It seems a bit repetitive though. I haven't been paying attention to the hearts at all. Yes, the variety of types of practices is good.

My friend and I have a running joke that the Duolingo bird will hunt us down with a crowbar if we miss lessons. Like, the persistent notifications have a bit on a "I see you missed another lesson. How do your kneecaps feel about that?" flavor to them. All joking of course. I enjoy the app, but, it doesn't seem to keep my ADHD brain engaged/challenged enough to really want to keep using it. So I'm searching for a better alternative.

Why do you want to learn Spanish?
I’m a medical professional who wants so badly to be able to communicate with Spanish patients that come to my hospital. Because being able to communicate effectively is part of the healing process as well
Also, I have been using the free version as just an introduction to Spanish, before I make my mind up as to which learning program I actually want to use. It’s not that I don’t feel like I’m not learning anything. Because I am learning. But I feel like what I am learning is jumbled up. And really kind of nonsensical. It’s like the “Alice in Wonderland” of language learning apps. But hey, it’s free and it’s something, rather than nothing. BUT I do not intend to stay with Duolingo.

Firstly, it is South American Spanish. This is not the Spanish Spaniards speak. Duolingo doesn't teach the verb Coger, one of the verbs more used in Spain and most of the countries because in México means To Fuck. Duolingo gives as an error expressions and meanings that are correct
