First time seeing one of these at work myself! Excellent catch, Danny! Crazy how it really is, essentially, on fire. Also looks like a train in serious emergency..

I have become a fan of you and your videos Danny. You have a voice that should be on radio or television. I watch the trains that used to be part of The Penn Central, then Conrail, and now Norfolk, CSX, and The Central Ohio Railroad with their purple engines. Greetings from Columbus Ohio.

Besides some added comments below here is some additional information. Each stone is attached to a motor which is raised or lowered by hydraulics. The amount of metal to be removed by each group of stones is carefully planned and the angles to be used. Each motor has a voltmeter and ammeter in the control car and the amount of metal being removed is directly proportional to the amps drawn by the motor. The metal removed is where most of the fine cracks start that would grow into large enough cracks that would cause the rails to break if left to grow. These cracks develop just under the surface because of the metal movement created under the wheel loads. A 100 ton car is 263,000 lbs GVW which works out to about 33,000 lbs per wheel and applied to an area about the size of a quarter the steel is almost at the end of elastic deformation so it doesn't return to its original state by a minute amount.
Each train needs motive power for travel but a lot of power for all of the grinding motors and pumps.

If you look at the rail after the rail grinder treatment the crown of the rail appears knurled or etched with a tread. Listening to a train going by, the wheels of the cars appear to emit a humming sound coming from the wheels passing over the newly treated rail surface. It's kind of neat.

Those guys that work on that railgrinders you have to give credit with the smell and the dirty working conditions Thank God they have their own power units and don't have train crews on them I got called for for this assignment years with a GP9 as the power and a van for the tailed The tail end crew had 24 cans of beer And for some reason a General Yardmaster along with us You for the most part walked outside the entire time At one time when a railgrinder was working It would operate under a Rule 42 for protection to protect machines and equipment Before entering the working limits contact had to be made with the foreman of the Rule 42 If a train was carrying special danagous commodities the railgrainder had to stop working before the train was allowed to proceed

Just watching some older videos. A fun fact is Loram does not use their own employees to put out fires. That is the reponsibility of the railroad and they ride our grinders to do just that and also pilot them in territory, such as this.
I'm on a dirt machine, but hoping to nail a chance of getting on a grinder.

Just started a job with NS, funny enough the rail grinder just came through our territory last week. I think the rail grinder runs at night so that it doesn’t slow down daytime freight traffic. The one up here starts work around 5:30 and usually finishes a section by 11 pm

Walter Parks, a former NS carman, has a channel called pwalpar. He has a video of a Loram grinder starting a brush fire near Griffin, GA. Someone called the local fire dept. but the Loram train backed up and put it out just as the fire truck arrived.

Those rain clouds would be a welcome site for the rail grinder. As a matter of fact, they would prefer the rain when grinding for obvious reasons, cools the rail as well to reduce breaks due to the heat. Another fact, keep a safe distance from the grinding operations if a grinding wheel breaks, you may not have a good day. Worse than hanging debris off a train at speed.

That railgrinder sounded like it had EMD 12-645C prime movers, or a derivative of anyway. They'd have a good time grinding the rails here in NZ, we don't have a railgrinder here, only a few track tampers and ballast cleaners

They use electric in urban areas and the diesels are not really diesel powered. The diesel engine powers an electric generator that turns electric traction motors on the axles. The USA is too wide open to electrify hundreds of thousands of miles of rail line.
