Nice video. Big thumbs up 👍🏼. Many of these you probably know: 1. That air filter can be cleaned, oiled with k&n spray and reused. It’s better than the disposable ones. 2. The PCV valve (the first item taken off the balance tube) is like $4 and should be replaced. ACDELCO cv1016c 3. Keep the domes and the pistons as a matched pair. Doing the carbs one at a time ensures this. 4. Mark the top of the butterfly flap. It goes on one way and is cut to fit exactly. 5. Replace the fuel filter and banjo bolt into the fuel floats. Carb kits don’t have them. Cheap & worth doing. I’ve done quite a few SU pairs myself. Honestly for the work involved consider sending your cores to Ztherapy in OR if you live in the USA. Like $600 or so gets you a rebuilt pair, and they replace the throttle shaft brass bearings with roller bearings. Why? The throttle response feels more ‘snappy’ and you won’t have vacuum leaks if the throttle shaft is sloppy. They do a nice job if you don’t have the patience (or skill) to do this yourself. They also fit new SM needles by default but will probably use stock needles if you specifically ask. They also rebuild the jets! If you bought new replacement needles and OEM Nissan jets, you’d spend like $200 on those parts alone. If you replate all the Linkages and steel parts, you’ll end up paying more. Then there’s the vapor honing… etc. Been there, done all that: both replacing all the parts and rebuilding myself and sending cores to Ztherapy. BTW you *can* buy the Ztherapy carbs and pay the core charge ($200? I think) and they send you a rebuilt pair upfront and refund the core charge when you send your old pair back. And you get a good CD to start learning SU tuning. Not a bad deal imho.
All true, thanks Richard! Especially #3 -- I will make sure to mention this in the "reassembly" video that will come when everything is back from zinc plating. I did not know about #4 but always make sure it closes very flush. We'll see if that is good enough. Perhaps I will have to try flipping one of them when I tune these on the engine. I agree, ZTherapy is a screaming deal at $600. I always wanted to rebuild a set of these myself. I definitely made a few mistakes but learned more about these SU carbs as a result. Regardless, no one is better with these than ZTherapy. Great to have such experts in our hobby. BTW, engine is done at the machine shop and I'll be going to pick it up soon. Will have a little "surprise" that will be very helpful/interesting to those who have followed the videos thus far.
Thanks Doug! Makes sense. I actually just got that intake heat shield back from a chrome shop and they had to dip it in some kind of strong solution to get the old plating off. Sandblasting it certainly wasn't cutting it. Editing to mention, in case anyone's wondering -- I am not chroming that piece haha, just the chrome shop I work with is run by a really smart guy who is great at all kinds of stuff like this.
Hey Ryan. I actually just dropped everything off at the zinc plater so expect to see a video soon about that process and how you can clean up the hardware beforehand. I use a bench grinder with a wire wheel attachment and some wire brush drill attachments. It probably isn’t recommended but for tougher to access areas I actually put those drill attachments on my drill press. For very rusty hardware, it is usually worth the extra effort to glass bead blast them first, and then finish with a wire wheel. Another trick I tried that works OK is to dip rusty hardware in vinegar beforehand, it seems to help remove some of the older plating and rust.
I just cleaned the piston with some carb cleaner. I did not remove the needle, at least not yet. I think I will have to do some research on needle centering and etc. when I do the full reassembly with a rebuild kit and everything zinc plated.
Hello, I have another video on rebuilding these carbs on my channel, and on my website there is a guide I wrote to tuning them. If you have any questions feel free to email me mark@zcarguide.com

Hmmm I did not match my domes and pistons or mark my butterfly valves…. Is it easy enough to work out post?
Fantastic narrator, great to see how thorough you are.
Awesome video man! You make me wish I had money and for a project like an l24 rebuild or 240z restoration
Worth noting - Vessel sells JIS screwdriver sets in the USA, I got some for my 260z project. Well worth it, having a lot better luck with them!
The unknown nuts on the side of the intake are for the heatshield.

Did you say you sale a carb kit? Link?
Great video mate! I’m doing the same project at the moment. What wire wheel set up did you use to clean up the hardware?

Did you have the piston vapor honed? How did you go with removing the needle from the piston?
