Datsun 240Z L24 Engine Full Rebuild - Start to Finish Restoration of a 50 Year Old Engine
This is an engine from a 1972 Datsun 240Z that I'm told was long ago abandoned in a field and the car and engine were separated. I rebuilt and restored this engine slowly over the course of 2 years and it's finally at a place where I'd say I'm done! The original plan was to build a metal test run stand for this and start the engine up, but at the moment I do not have a place to work and decided to build a wooden stand for it to sit inside my apartment until I have access to garage again. Maybe someday I'll even put it in a car! For now I just enjoy looking at it, hopefully it is now similar to the day it rolled out of the factory over 50 years ago.
This is meant to be an overview of the whole project, but if you are interested in more detail, I have a whole series of videos that go into pretty much everything shown here in far greater detail.
The VIN stamped is: 147753
P30 Block, E88 Head
The casting code is: 2X161 = October 16th, 1972
"2" = 1972, "X" = October (format is 1-9 then X, Y, Z for Oct, Nov Dec), "16" = 16th, "1" = Batch #1 of the day

    I watched your video and the one part I wanted to see was what size are the nuts that are holding the carburetor on the manifold and how did you remove the bottoms ones. Very hard to get to.

    Nice video, although I was mostly interested in seeing how you installed the rear main cap side seals and rear main seal. Bummed that didn’t make it into the video.

    I have a 1971 240z , lost the keys :( and I don't think the door locks match the ignition so can't use those to make a new key. Without a key code, is this the only option for a lost key?

    When I first bought my 240Z, I used to take my car to a Datsun only repair shop. I watched as a mechanic installed new sparkplugs in a customer's car. After he performed the initial torquing of the sparkplugs, he loosened each sparkplug and retorqed them! He did this several times. When I asked him why he performed this torquing sequence, he said that he wanted to be sure that the sparkplugs' compression gaskets were fully compressed or the sparkplugs wouldn't be fully torqued. I have found this to be true when installing new sparkplugs in my Z! The sparkplugs for later model cars don't seem to need this procedure!

    A couple of tips: Dealing with oil pan bolts in a car is a pain, replace them with studs and nuts. Instead of RTV, use Permatex No 3 aviation goo on paper gaskets, you can reuse them forever. Also works well on rubber gaskets like the rocker cover. Just don't spill it in your toolbox, you'll never get rid of it!

    • @zcarguide
      @zcarguide 9 місяців тому

      re gaskets: makes sense, I’ll look into that in the future. As for studs, the goal for this engine was high originality.

    All those cad plated parts, did you strip them down and replate them or buy new ones? Excellent job on the rebuild, btw! Would very much like to see/hear the initial startup and tuning. Tuning SU side-draft carbs can be a pita... Make sure you have a flow meter...

    Did you do the zinc plating and yellow chromate to the select parts in around the carbs? Where did you source the labels on the air cleaner housing? Satisfying to watch your process!

    • @zcarguide
      @zcarguide Рік тому

      Labels are from ZCarDepot! Yes, I did 2 colors of zinc plating, clear and yellow/gold. Because this always gets questions: they typically charge $150 per color but did not charge me for the clear since it was only a few parts. The vast majority is yellow zinc.

      Hey David, thank you! No car right now. I was told the engine and car were separated long ago and I bought the engine by itself. I am still really excited to build a test run stand for it someday but it would also be really cool to put this in a 240Z after that. I wish the 510 just had a bit more room, as that is what I would really love to put this in.

    Thanks for sharing. I also keep one of those small, 30cents note books in which I write important details like date and mileage of oil change and brand of oil. There's those little stickers that you stick on the door, pillar but in the note book you can write down other information like brake service, tyre change, engine, gearbox overhaul etc. This information would also be usefull to a new owner.

    Hi, I'm reviving a 240z that has the exact same thermostat housing with the big outlet and the other 3 little. But the car is missing the 3 little hoses and I'm trying to figure out which lines they plug into. Got. A pic? I haven't found a diagram and it doesn't show in the manual. Thank you in advance and I love your rebuild!

    Nice one, but for that money.........I put two points down, the wheels are not so Datsun original (its the Minilites) and the color is bland. My choice for color would be a darker shade of blue, or darker shade of silver. 1970's Mercedes-Benz have that darker shade of silver and I think the 240Z would look stunning in it.

    When you said that you want to keep the car original, I thought this is the Datsun 240Z channel I want to watch. These cars are iconic classics and remind many of us of our young days back in the heady 70's. Your meticulous attention to detail is very much appreciated, this car is in good hands. Thank you and looking forward to completion of this project.
