I built PCs for all three of my kids, rather than just getting them consoles, and never regretted it. There's 10 years between the eldest and youngest, but the games they gravitated to tended to be non-violent, more 'constructive' sandbox type ones (Roblox, Minecraft, etc.). My eldest son went on to do Computer Science at Uni, has been coding for a living, builds and repairs pcs, phones, etc. - and I know it all began with the PC. (Just make sure 'safe browsing' is enabled and consider the option to limit screen time, though!). I don't think any of them would be quite as productive as they are now had they only experienced console gaming, etc.

Neil! Shout out from the Pacific Northwest, and huge congratulations on your adoption. You will have the time of your life being a father, and I know you will be fantastic at it. It’s such a huge page to turn, and the beginning of a new life. Cheers and thank you for all of the great podcasts. Hope to visit the cave one day. -Graphician for Jake & Peppy on the Vampire V4 -CE

    Hi all,
I normally listen on Spotify, so late to the comments!
I just wanted to say to Neil, congratulations on adopting! As an adopted child myself, I understand the benefits of being adopted to a loving home.
One thing I wanted to say, and feel free to discard this/tell me “of course we’ve thought about that!”
But the best thing my adoptive parents did for me was to let me know very young that I was. It just became very natural to me, there was no question they were my parents, no matter how I came to become their son.
I’m sure you’ve thought this through, just wanted to share my experience.
Looking forward to hearing about your lovely family on an upcoming episode.

IRC exploded when quake became popular. Quakenet IRC was briefly the biggest social media platform in the world circa 1998

I was already on irc pre-quake, but it was the social media platform of it’s time where like minded individuals shared their excitement prior to and post Quake launch.
Prior to Quake, EFNET or UnderNet were typically the networks I could be found on.

Don't forget IRCnet for Demo Scene.
Still have a ton of friends from the IRC days, we just use the current social media platforms to keep contact.

Correction - 57:29 the original Mario Kart came out in 1992, two years before Whacky Wheels (1994) and BC Racers which also came out in 1994.

The Atari 5200 was on a technical level a console version of the Atari 800 core chipset. So you want a comparison example, the Atari 800/xl/xe version would be a good choice.

I find it hilarious that Neil and Dave brought Chris for a cameo for this Jaguar experience, but not for his parenting experiences. TWIR clearly has priorities 😂

My kids play a lot of games, but I can honestly say that playing games together is the only time they aren’t trying to just straight up murder one another.

Yes, as a now 48 year old ICQ was my introduction to online communities and online gaming here in germany,... mostly playing Quake2 / Interstate76 at the time. I feel ya Dave, i _still_ can't seem to find a nice balance between onlinegaming and offline life. It's either on or off....sigh.... one day... one day i'll get it !

When I was a teenager, the only video games existed at video game arcades. We've come a very long way. It wasn't until I was 19 that I got a Commodore 64 in 1984. That's when it began for me. I built my kid's machines and now they build their own.

My son started with Minecraft around age 5. His Mum is a coder, so he quickly learnt how to use the console to create builds. Now hes 10, the guy is doing rather well academically. There's a lot of technical knowledge to be gained from gaming, even at a superficial level.

Taking away what kids love the most as punishment can also backfire. It's too complicated a subject to tackle in a comments section, but if a kid is having a rough time socially in school and their only escape is games, and you take that away, they'll possibly hate you and harbor resentment for years. It's a lazy solution. It might work for some kids but not others.

/Pedant mode on/ Dear oh dear Dave, I'm correcting your corrections now. The big football tournament of 1980 was not the Olympics, but Euro '80 (the same tournament that is currently taking place). It was won by Germany. Nobody really cared about the Olympics as no professional players took part. /Pedant mode off./

I find Virtua Fighter much harder to get into than Street Fighters 2 but once you dig a little, the fighting system is fantastic fun. In fact, I believe that Virtua Fighter 2 is one of the reasons why the Saturn was so popular in Japan.

"Gamming" as a term has only been around since the 2000's I think, back in the 80's and 90's it wasn't seen as a serious pastime so wasn't allowed an official label :)

i think the kids will be fine with the internet during my childhood i had phases when i went outside often and phases when i was just inside watching tv all day and doing things that i would consider boring now .since i was 12 i made sure to go walking almost every day even if its raining. i would also play my game boy outside since it was easier to see what was going on with sunlight since my parents didn't let me turn on the lights when it was daytime. my neighbourhood didn't have a lot of kids my age so that made it boring to go outside. most people living there were very old and their kids were my parents age. now these people have died and new people moved in mostly people my age or a little older with their own kids. but when i was growing up i only had 1 friend that was a few years older and stopped talking to me when he reached puberty. and then i had a younger friend who i stopped talking with because he couldn't keep up since he was younger than me. the one thing i am concerned about is kids watching weird things online. but the big problem is the parents like i tried to warn people i know irl about elsa gate and other strange content but they didn't seem to care .it can be surprising how even a lot of people born in the 80s and 90s who are becoming parents now don't know much about technology despite growing up with computers unlike the older generations so this can lead to drama .

How old is complaining about 'the youth of today' is? Well, there are clay tablets in cuneiform that contain such complaints, also fart jokes and complaining about poor quality copper!
But Oh, The young-uns today do not know the horror of the Ferrous Age Format Wars. All data encoded on 'rust' bonded to plastic, be it strips on spools, or platters enclosed in plastic. In dozens of different sizes and encoding formats. Wrong format, on the wrong system, tape snaps, the arcane and torturous methods we used to programme the video recorder (VHS, Beta or even V2000!) only to find the show previous to the one we wanted ran over so we lost the last 10 minutes of the never to be repeated episode!

Well you put your finger on it, there are less children and less of them are allowed to roam the streets - and you are prime example of typical middle aged folks without kids (congrats Neil on the other hand), so in a way I am more critical of our generation than the kids.
My older kids are playing various games in bursts, no Fortnite or Roblox yet fortunately. I wouldn't mind Micecraft though. Fortunately they like to read as well as go outside exploring (and allowing them to do so I took the pill and they got a phone at the age of 9)
The little one enjoys Thomas the Steam Engine (Mega Drive) on an emulation handheld.
