  • In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create an index in Microsoft Word. Firstly, I'll demonstrate how to mark entries in the document. Entries are the bits of text that will be listed in the index; Word will automatically add the page numbers next to these. I'll then show you how to insert the index (this is usually at the end of the document) and how to update the index should you make further changes.

Thanks Rene - greatly appreciated - I'm pretty disappointed to see some of the chat comments made by some people and obviously haven't watched your videos :)

Clear and helpful! But what if I want to make an index of person names, for example of Joe Block? On the index page I would like to see Block, Joe ..... and then the page numbers, but in the text all instances of the person must be referenced, e.g. Joe Block, Mr. Block, Joe, et cetera. I have tried to make this, but until now failed .....

am having with this..I have a word e.g adverts used many times. If I want to capitalise the entry Adverts so that it appears like that in the index your method works. But it only gives ONE capitalised entry in the index, while all the other instances of that word appear on a new line in the index. So you have two lines - one for Adverts, one for adverts.

Is there an automatic way of doing an index? I have a 388 technical document to do an index for. I can't do it one word at a time. I'll be at it until my hair turns gray.
