@@harmonicgamer2756 While streaming themselves playing Persona 5, Robbie Daymond, Max Mittelman, and Ray Chase (Akechi, Ryuji, and the subway announcer's VAs respectively) ordered a pizza as their characters. You can find the clip on the second highlights video uploaded by LindaK if you're curious; it's pretty funny. The pizza part starts about a minute and a half in.
The more I look back at Akechi's character, the more I notice about him. It's gone from where I used to think this was a satisfying beatdown, to a tragic story of a boy who lost his chance at happiness when consumed by his thirst for revenge. Let's go over what we know about Akechi. His mother was abandoned by his father and he was forced to live alone for most of his life. Akechi was consumed by hatred and guilt, blaming himself for his mother's unfortunate circumstance. His desire for revenge and freedom caused his Persona, Loki, to manifest within his heart. It's sad because Akechi likely felt trapped when he discovered the truth. In his heart, he was always insane. Above all else, he wanted revenge. But you can tell that throughout the story Akechi is able to hide that bloodlust fairly well. Deep down, he didn't want to acknowledge that side completely. Why else do you think he tries to so hard to fit in? Why he decided to become an 'ace detective'? Why he was strict about his grades? Deep down, he knows what he's doing is wrong. He never once tries to justify his murders as some 'higher cause' or 'justice' like Shido does. Akechi's just lost the ability to care. What has the world ever given him? He only feels betrayed and empty.
The songs of praise from the masses mean nothing to him with how petty and fraudulent they really are. When they need him they're nice and when they don't they're not. No wonder he doesn't care about what they think. The closest thing he has to actual meaningful approval is the bastard father who abandoned him, but his father nonetheless. In his youth, Akechi likely wanted to be a hero of justice. Someone who would be needed by someone else. That's what Robin Hood represents. Akechi's white outfit and fake persona are more than just lies. They symbolize a large part of his past. A past he believes has no real value in the modern era and are just childish beliefs that only serve to delude the idiotic masses. When the masses see a valiant hero, they bow their heads and depend on that beacon of light to guide them. In a way Akechi's almost 'mocking' the world's lack of drive and willingness to give up their hopes to their 'god'. Akechi was very much a victim of the same circumstances and still is, but the thought of seeing others in society just like him convinces him there's no real worth in saving the world. The white suit and Robin Hood persona also seem to be jabs at the Phantom Thieves. To Akechi, they represent the same immature delusions he had before and the gaudy design of his suit and the overblown heroic design of Robin Hood are likely meant to show he doesn't take them seriously. To him, they're children playing games they don't understand. When Akechi changes into his true form, we see the real side of him. His new outfit is dark and much more suitable for stealth. However, if you look at the design closely the patterns on the suit resemble the same ones used for prisoner garbs. This can symbolize how Akechi is very much a prisoner of fate just like Joker, but unlike Joker, he feels there isn't a hope for him to escape or change. The garb is the representation of Akechi's agony and hatred not just of the world, but of himself as well. His mask in this form is also much larger and covers nearly his whole face. This strikes a contrast from the rest of the Phantom Thieves, who wear their masks only to cover a portion of their face. But Akechi covering nearly his whole face could show his desire to keep his true nature as a violent murderer concealed. Unlike the others, he has more reason to hide his identity from the public. Loki's design features the same prison garb design and pattern as before. But you may also notice how Loki's sitting. It's a very mocking and belittling pose. Combined with the long pole he rests atop it could show how Akechi's persona is ultimately so in control of his own life that it seems to taunt him and look down on his decision for revenge, thinking him more a lowly puppet of a system he wished to once change. In mythology, many of the disasters Loki helped to contain, were actually ones orchestrated by him. This was done so the Aesir would believe they needed Loki. Sound familiar?
Finally, the most important part. Akechi hates Joker, but why specifically? To him Joker is the manifestation of everything he couldn't be. They're both really the same kinds of people, but on opposite sides of the game. They were both used and manipulated by the same man. They're both outcasts in society. But unlike Akechi, Joker has friends. He was able to find a way out of his situation and become a hero. He saved so many others and overcame the odds. Akechi hates Joker because he sees an image of his past almost 'mocking him'. You wanted a happy life, didn't you? Too bad!! Murderers don't get that chance! You could've made friends and been someone different, but no! You threw it away for a pointless revenge! Akechi knows how pointless it all is but the temporary satisfaction from getting what he considers to be some kind of meaningful acknowledgement outweighs the bad. Joker is what he couldn't become. The chance he threw away when he wasted his life. He just wanted friends. People who cared about him and needed him. But he's too far in that he doesn't want to admit that initially. That anger and confusion causes him to go insane. It's his ideals versus the past he could've had. The friend he could've been with and shared his true pain with. The only way to make it hurt less is to destroy it. To destroy Joker and any pleasantries they once shared. Any good moments or genuine bond they once had. But in the end, Akechi did just want a friend. And after everything he'd done, the group was still ready to give him a chance to change. It's what helps Akechi to finally believe there's some hope for the world after all. His final act, in a life of broken dreams and violence, is to help the group that embodied his old faded dreams. To die at the hands of the puppet version of himself. The one who sold his soul for pointless revenge.
Another thing I noticed is that Akechi embodies all the 'worst' aspects of each of the Phantom Thieves.
Like Joker, he's ambitious and carries a strong sense of justice, but his sense is a twisted one built upon a dream he couldn't fulfill. One that became lost when he realized the true cruelty of the world.
Like Ryuji, he harbors a strong disgust for corrupt adults and people who use their powers to oppress others, but he doesn't have the drive or motivation to fight against the system and surrenders himself to it for a pointless long term goal.
Like Morgana, he's confused as to where he belongs, but unlike the cat, he doesn't have friends to steer him towards the right path. Only the corrupt adults and masses who use him for their own gain.
Like Ann, he's frequently judged based on appearance. Where Ann is often seen as a prize for her beauty Akechi is seen as only that for his role as an 'ace detective'. The world doesn't really see either of them for who they really are, but Akechi made up that role for himself to gain trust, not because it was forced on him.
Like Yusuke, he denies the obvious crimes his adoptive father has committed and insists on living for that man's approval, but unlike Yusuke, who finds the strength to face the truth and fight against the corrupt man, Akechi doesn't believe there's a real way out for him. All he has left is the revenge he wasted his life trying to reach.
Like Makoto, he puts on a fake 'perfect' alter ego in front of others so he can fit in and get to where he wants in life. But deep down, both he and Makoto are angry and frustrated with the people who force those expectations on them. It's also why Akechi cynically mocks Makoto earlier in the story when he sees through her act. To him, her desperation to fit in disgusts him as it's a reflection of his own desire, which he hates.
Like Futaba, he's resigned himself to one path, even if it means he'll rot away being left miserable and unsatisfied for the rest of his life. Futaba wanted to die because she felt she was responsible for her mother's death. Akechi knew the consequences of his crimes but he didn't care what punishment he got. He knew the risks and still went through it. They both 'locked' themselves away from their happiness in pursuit of an irrational and self destructive goal.
Like Haru, he feels used and beaten down by a larger corporation, like he has no real say in any of the shady dealings or corrupt practices going on. But while Haru wished to change the system with the help of her friends, Akechi had no one to back him up and as a result, he became a 'puppet' of the system he hated.
A dark reflection of the cruelty of society and how no matter how hard you try, not everyone can be saved. That's what Akechi is in the end and why he's in my opinion, one of the best written characters in this game.

Akechi is everything the PTs could have been.
Joker is everything Akechi wanted to be but never could.

Akechi persona fits his character loki has always been my favorite to the point that I called joker loki the first time i played
Kinda makes you wonder if the group were killers would akechi be willing to attempt to convince them to join him or would he still try to frame and kill them?
On the other hand if akechi wasn't the one behind the mental shutdowns or psychotic breakdowns and was simply using the metaverse to establish himself as an actual ace detective (like figuring out where to look for the crimes criminals conduct their business for evidence) would he still have robin hood and Loki as his persona or would he have a single proper persona like Edmond Dantes and what would his second tier persona be?
I will never get tired of seeing this boss fight and conversation.

14:41 - for all the people stating that the Phantom Thieves knew about Akechi being the Black Mask beforehand - yes, they did. When Makoto says "So, you are the one behind the mental shutdowns after all" - it's more highlighting the fact that he didn't do it for Shido, more for himself as the "Detective Prince"

The young man who worked his entire life to be special and approval of everyone, even his piece of shit father. And seeing someone like Joker get similar things despite being a "criminal" broke his mind. It is tragic really.
Makes you wonder what he life would of been like if he met someone who actually cared about him and treated him like he deserved to be treated.
To quote Akechi himself:
"I wonder why we couldn't have met a few years earlier..."

But with the new context of the revamped Confidant, I can see Akechi’s rank up events alluding to what happened in this fight.

Description of mental shutdowns/psychotic breakdowns - Rank 7, more specifically the pool game with him, mostly his description of the perfect crime.
His need to eliminate the PTs (mostly Joker) - Rank 7 (he sees the other Thieves as balls in the way of the one he needs to sink), with Joker, it’s with his Rank 8 event.
Akechi’s inner fury and chaos unleashed - Rank 8 event for obvious reasons.

Edit: Flash forward to episode 136, he does, even moreso than before. But a lot more subdued.

If you think about it, Robin Hood was only the shell of Akechis true inner darkness, Loki.
Its like holding in your pent up anger to the point where it can't be contained anymore and then suddenly it breaks out, completely losing yourself.

I think the extra scenes in Akechi's social link really help him come across as a bit more of a sympathetic character than in the original game. You feel closer to the character because you actually spend time with him when ranking up the social link, rather than automatically advancing it through arbitrary meetings.

In the vanilla game akechi seemed a little bit over top for me, but he has kind of grown on me; he seems to me more fleshed out in Royal and general it's easier to put everything in context the second time around.

I like that in this game, they actually mention that Akechi may be a trickster as well, like Joker. I don't think that they mentioned that back in the original Persona 5.

Potential spoiler but lets be real, Musical knows already he is terrible at hiding the fact that he knows where the game will go
Forgetting Akechi his promise will stop you from being able to unlock his third awakening the the extra semester.
Without going into spoilers, i actually HATE what Royal did with Akechi, but we will learn more in the months to come and i will refrain from explaining myself until the time is right!
but royal did so much with akechi that made him better especially with the events of the third semester.
I think Akechi has maybe some of the greatest character potential, as the rival of the protagonist. Like. They could do a lot of cool things with him like a dramatic redemption arc, or something along those lines. Hopefully they don’t ruin it like you make it seem they will. (I’m still not over with how dirty they did Haru). Edit: I misspelled her name at first oops.
