For me, it's not about the budget, it's more about getting what I really want. I have been looking for something specific, for a background. I rarely use any other type of embossing folders, usually just backgrounds. Or I cut from dies and emboss the die cut, for instance a sweater or mittens with a knit pattern folder. But I've been looking for an embossing folder in a 5x7 size of pine boughs. No such luck. So it's great that I can make my own. This is the third video I've watched and every technique has been different. The first on just used one layer, so it was more like an embossing plate. They applied 3 layers of scrap paperboard die cuts glued on top of each other onto a piece of chipboard. Then they used a silicone embossing mat on top when they ran it through. The second used just a plain cardboard made into a folder like yours, but they didn't cut the dies out of the top part of it. I think maybe I'll try all of these methods and see which works best. I was thinking of using a piece of thicker craft foam as the top layer of the folder, but I'm not sure. I am going to experiment.
You should try all of the methods and see what you like most. I'm sure every technique can be tweaked to fit your needs. I've moved on to other types of crafts, so I haven't made my own embossing folder in a while but I still remember how fun it was 😊🌹

Oh, this is great!!! I'm wondering if I might try a double thickness of craft or box board, cut separately then glued together. For top and bottom of folder.

You can try everything out. It's just paper scraps. Maybe you'll invent something new!😁🎄
That’s fantastic! Would making the folder bigger prevent a crease made by the edges of the cardboard, or is that not an issue?

I had no problems with creases, no. It might depend on the paper but I don't think it will have a crease. Hope that helps🌹
