    I went to the very 1st preseason game for an 18 year old Roy Hibbert at Georgetown University in 2004. I was AMAZED at how slow footed and uncoordinated he was. I left truly believing that he was NEVER going to play NBA basketball. I seriously questioned the fact that he was even given a D1 scholarship. I can’t truly described how terribly unathletic and slow footed he was. 4 years later he was a 1st round draft pick and played 10 years in the NBA. This kid is WAY WAY WAY more athletic than Hibbert was at 18.

      It will come down to coaching. You don’t need good footwork at 7 foot 9. You need to be fast. Coordination can be developed. He just needs to be coached how to wrestle his way under the hoop while he doesn’t have the ball. Then a good guard can simply feed him with a lob pass and it’s indefensible without fouling. 2 points every single time.
      Defensively same thing. Just needs to develop technique to wrestle his way under the basket, then he can block or influence shots and get rebounds.
      If he avoids injury and has no heart issues he could become a productive NBA player. Unfortunately avoiding knee injuries at that height is very difficult playing division I basketball.

    People keep saying Wemby is 7'4" just because that's what the NBA officially claimed he is. Yet look up pictures of him standing next to 7'4" Zach Edey, and Wemby easily towers him by 1-2 inches. And that was taken several years ago, so Wemby has actually GROWN since then (and Edey was still playing in Purdue at the time as a registered 7'4"). They're both in shoes, and standing right next to each other. Wemby is now *at least* 7'6" just like Yao and Shawn Bradley.

No camera tricks, no weird angles, they’re both just standing up straight and side by side. Wemby EASILY has a couple inches over that 7’3.75” Edey. He looks like he might be the type of player who would benefit from a few years in Europe after college as a path to the NBA. With no Defensive Three Seconds in FIBA ball he might be a defensive force clogging the paint and protecting the rim. Three or Four years in Europe would give him more time to mature and bulk up as well as develop his game. He could start in one of the lower divisions for a year or two and work his way up to EuroLeague if he has the talent and dedication.

  • @skiena
    @skiena 6 місяців тому +4

    Dude should be trying to develop an outside shot -- at his height it would be unguardable. If he can dunk without jumping then he should be trying to shoot from near the same height as the rim. He'll either get his shot away or get fouled 95% of the time -- even if he's got a player in front of him.

He needs to push himself to improve speed, agility, balance, and all the things a guy 18” shorter doesn’t ever have to think about. Otherwise he will get pushed around and out by smaller guys who know how to get their bodies to do what they want.

    as we all know, just being tall isn't enough. the height advantage only really shines if all else is equal, otherwise its just a huge tradeoff. rioux needs to work on speed and flexibility and needs to be put against people that can apply enough pressure to develop his skill. Wemby, for example, has everything a great NBA player needs. He also happens to be tall and know how to leverage it. Height is part of his package. For Rioux, he has to know that his height can't be his whole schtick. i'm not ruling him out, but he needs a lot of work

    This KID needs to start looking at Wemby's training if he is serious about wanting to play ball, Wemby does a lot of stretching and agility work , spends a lot of time working on his feet ankles and hips , this new kid has a proportionate build which is unusual for his height and is not stick thin like Wemby who IMO could do with putting on 20lbs so he would be more substantial . IF Olivier wants to do this as a career he needs to really start working NOW , because the better prepared the longer he can play.

    I think you make way too much sense….most people think a 7’9” guy would be a lock to play in the NBA, but you seem like you know what you’re talking about, because just being tall isn’t nothing in the NBA….right now an nba team would go up and down the court before he even turns around. I mean I’m with you, I hope he gets better and more agile, but probably won’t get drafted at all.

    "Players this size are always going to have an opportunity to play on a bigger stage." WRONG. Especially nowadays. A big that cannot switch on defense has no place in the modern NBA. And being strong enough is the LEAST of his concerns. Mobility FAR tops that. A lack of skills not far behind.

    Wow many you have no real insight into basketball... trotting out the same old mythis about tall guys and history that they get injuredf and can't be co-ordinated or play agaisnt the "Bigs" in the NBA. Listen man, Wemby came and did it and so did others.
    Just like a lot of small talented players don't last because of their height there are always guys who make the NBA and have great careers. With Oliver Rioux - he is special and I don't see how you can't see that. He is 7'9 and goes to the IMG academy. He is playing extremely well there agaisnt the best upcoming players. They talked a lot of crap about Zach Edey (another great Canadian player) but guess what, he's gone 9th in this year's draft despite all the doubters saying he lacked lateral speed etc. You can't manufacture height, weight, or wingspan and this kid Oliver Rioux is going to be drafted in the 1st Round. I'm predicting it... He may need a year or two to show it in College ball but he's ready I tell you. He's a project but ready. If he declared this year for the NBA I believe he'd still be drafted and be put into the 905 league.
