My grandma loves this song, she says it reminds her of a son who died a few days after being born in the 70's, and this song was played at the wake. It's weird because we live in Brazil and she doesn't understand English and she doesn't even know the meaning of that letter, she doesn't even know where Mississippi is. it's proof that a good melody and a good voice have a universal language, can give new meaning to a song

when this was a number 1 in the UK it came with a music video of them singing on a Mississippi river boat dressed in blue denim wearing gun belts

A number 1 hit here in the UK back in 1975 when i was 8.
The lyrics are about the history of music, and how rock music became more popular than country music.
Their other hit was 'Smile' which actually does make you smile when you hear it :)

I discovered this tune when i was very young as my parents had the 7” single and I used to play it. It reached no. 1 in the UK charts in 1976. Beautiful tune!

Never ceases to amaze me that this song didn't make it to the charts in the US, while it reached nr 1 in a number of European countries, New Zealand and South Africa.

Another great tune. Love the lead singers voice. …just beautiful. This song reached No 1 in the UK chart and many other European countries. My favourite song by them is Georgie. Definitely worth checking out , it’s fabulous 😊

Mississippi was the group´s first number-one single in Germany. In New Zealand
and South Africa "Mississippi" was their first of two number-one singles.

Never heard of either the group or this song before but I enjoyed it on first listen. Pussycat must've been a country group and this song "Mississippi" has a really good country/pop sound.

Another great reaction. Knowing the song, I would say that they were lip-syncing but I may be wrong on that. Back in the late 70s, my friend who was moonlighting as a disk jockey at dances came back from a trip to Hamilton with a stack of 45s, all of this song. He was handing them out as prizes at the dances. At the time, I didn't know any of their story of how they were Dutch. It was the sort of song that one could instantly like.

Their hit 'Smile' is one of my favourites...Dad requested it to be played at his funeral. It was a message for my Mum.

I still love this band, they sound great. For more Dutch music from that time, I would suggest "the Cats" with scarlett ribbons or one way wind, its something special in my opinion. Or Floor Jansen ( Nightwish ) for more modern music 🎶🎵

They were from my hometown in the Netherlands , and became world famous with this song at least in the 70-ties ! I don’t know if you ever heard of the dutch band shocking blue with their number 1 hit in the states called “ Venus “ ! Maybe something to check out !

It wasn’t live. If you watch most of the videos from this group singing Mississippi it’s the exact same sound track. They were miming. I even watched a video of Toni (lead singer) in her later years and it was the same track. I only know that because I’ve watched this song being sung by them dozens of times over last couple of days cause it’s a great song I’ve rediscovered.

Far out Man! Isn’t that a blast from the past! I first heard this in 1992. I never thought I would hear it on a youtube reaction channel, that’s for sure. I happen to have a Pussycat: Greatest Hits CD. Mississippi is the first track on it. They have some other great ones too like: ‘Georgie,’ ‘Just A Woman,’ ‘Mexican Lane’ & ‘Bad Boy’ to name a few. They are a very hidden gem that everyone seems to have forgotten or never knew existed. I like them, so they must be good! LOL

I've never heard of this either so I had to look them up. They had a hit with this song in a lot of countries but not the U.S. Not sure it was even released here, so I doubt it ever got any airplay. It was pretty good though. I kept thinking about Massachusetts by the Bee Gees while they were singing it, and sure enough that was the inspiration for this song. Pretty cool!

Please do 'Squeeze - Labelled with Love' for another country 'feel' song with a great story and also 'The Adventures - Broken Land' for a song which was the most played song on BBC radio 1 in the late 80s, and was about 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland.
