While I would take a summer day over anything, there is something about a winter day with the snow crunching under your feet and the sun rising in the morning or setting for the day. Thanks Scott and your big boat Chrysler (with it's distinctive groaning starter)! Spring will get here in time! 😆
My dad had a 79 Catalina 4 Dr. He had that car forever. He got over 200,000 miles on it before he got rid of it. Took my drivers test in it and by sheer luck passed my parallel parking in it.
Reminds me of my first daily-- a '66 300 coupe with rust all around the skirts. That car, laced with dried salt spray, is my symbolic winter beater. Crunchy snow, biting cold, the shellacky perfume of old gas and the sound of a Hamtramck Hummingbird are wonderful memory prickers. That first winter in 1976, I lost use of it for 2 weeks when the starter died in the tight parking space my landlords' fenced off from the alley behind their back yard. I tunneled under the Chrysler, dropped the old starter, and walked it to the auto parts store I lived next to, and traded it in on a remanned unit. Installed it. And--nothing. I checked everything else, and took the bus 6 miles to work while scratching my head for two weeks to dig up a solution. That bus had a stop at Social Security, and I still recall the colorful array of characters who would get off there. After two weeks of smoothing the snow tunnel walls with my winter jacket -- like a torpedo in a tube, I took out the new starter, walked it to the store and had it checked. It was bad. Thanks for another simple but deep monolog on practical motoring, Scott.
That reminds me of having an intermittent dead spot on my '72 Chevy Vega starter way back when I was about 20 years old. That starter was a year-old rebuilt, that I had installed...a year earlier... ha ha. I went and bought another rebuilt starter, took it out of the box and put it on the ground near the car. I pulled the "old" starter out and placed it on the ground near the "new" rebuilt starter, making a mental note as to which one was which, before I went back inside. I forget whether I had to go to the bathroom or eat lunch, but when I came back out, I forgot which was the "new" starter, and even upon close inspection I could not find any dirt, stickers, or fastener indentations to indicate which one was which. After much too much head-scratching I just picked one of them and installed it, worse came to worse it was only an intermittent problem...sorry I don't remember today if I had picked the correct starter, but I did learn from that point forward never leave something like that to chance or memory😃
Walter Percy Chrysler would’ve been so proud to have seen this! .. with his name proudly badged on the rear! True Chrysler quality and durability 50 years on!
1970's "pre Gas Crisis" cars were such BOATS! Every time Scott cranks that hi-torque starter, releasing that distinct Chrysler product sound, I immediately think of Jake, Elwood, and their visit with "THE PENGUIN"!!

It almost killed the 928 V8 which was "ready" but had to be kept on hold for quite some years because Porsche didn't know whether they could go on producing cars, at all, it killed the first approach BMW had already started towards their next modern V8 after the slightly outdated 502/507/Glas3.2CS V8 wasn't produced anymore, it killed the Montreal, it killed the Ghibliengined V8-project the SM was meant to become (and which is the reason why there's so awkwardly much room in front of the engine in the SM powerplant-compartment), it killed the entire Citroën car-producing company which went into Michelin ownership with a V6 beginner-SM and a Birotor that wasn't yet ready and a CX that thus had to be a modest 4cyl.-DS powered small car instead of the originally planned V6 ..... The PRV-engine Volvo, Peugeot and Renault had made in a joint venture originally wasn't the rough, unyeilding V6 we know from Peugeot 604, the Matra Espace and the 26* Series Volvos - it originally was a V8 engine, but built with two cut-off cylinders less to please the "economic" imperative the OPEC and Nixon's oil-dollar-dictatorship had brought over the car-world. I loved that engine in the Espace, it was superlight, super reliable and nearly undestroyable, and it was an easy-fixer to repair. Just imagine what that PRV V8 alone could have done for Europe's car industry.

The best winter beater you have. Though you should know, when running your old mopar cold to warm it up, put the transmission in neutral! It won't pump trans fluid in park. That means no transmission fluid lubrication! Will make that transmission last way longer. This from a 33 year transmission Chrysler guy. Cool video Scott!
Scott, although you're much younger than my dad, your cold starts always remind me of him. No matter how cold or how much snow. Every vehicle on the property had to be started and "limbered up" for when the roads were open again. One very cold winter, my 74 Pinto was the only thing that fired up. Dad had a 79 Luv 4x4, mom had an 80 Citation x11. All the neighbors had big barges like your Newport. The neighbors shoveled our street so my little Pinto could jump start them all. I love you and the channel.
I took my driving test in this car. Parallel parked this beast to pass. Something I will never forget. Thanks for bringing back those memories. Great cars, great times. Your channel is the very best.

It's something we never think of but the sound of old carburated engine cold starting is quite the rarity nowadays. Love the classic Mopar starter run on for ages.😁

My folks bought a 1968 New Yorker when I was in high school (1983). It had a high compression 440 which moved the old 4440 pound beast around respectably. That car had the BEST, HOTTEST heater of any vehicle I have been around. We had cold snap of -30⁰F around Christmas and the old Chrysler sat outside. It started EVERY time!
If it quits, check the plastic timing gear. I had one break on Mom's '71 Fury. Dad had to help me with that one, it was my first time tearing into a V-8.
Once upon a time, in1969 with a foot of snow on the ground in Omaha, my winter beater at age 16 was a 1964 Corvair 4dr red in color and no heater ducts and had to operate the wipers by hand reaching under the dash. The Covair would get around never getting stuck, just a minor inconvenience of hand-powered wipers and three layers of socks, and a few cans of canned heat.. great memories and times of my youth.

I was hoping you'd get the Chevelle from flip town, but as someone who also suffers from having too many projects, I understand the concept of going with a vehicle that's already operational. Plus that Newport is pretty epic, loved the carbon cam footage!
When the snow squeaks, my beard, mustache and eyebrows ice up and frost over, my nose hairs freeze and I walk backwards into the wind to not freeze my lungs and lose my breath, it’s cold and Winter is here. 🤬. Same Cold Shit. 😏

Cool !! The Newport reminds me of a guy I used to work with when was around 18. He was about 24 and a US Navy veteran. he had a 1973 Fury III he called "The Riverboat". He was the best. I thought I knew how to drink until I met him. Lotta fun times...
the sound of that 400 idling hard being shoved into drive and then reverse over and over again brought back fond memories of my dad trying to drag our 79 winnebago out of its grave every june for our summer camping trip, he would have to fight a fuckin war just to get that 440 to idle, let alone move foreward and backwards. many a giant cloud of exhaust made by many a jug of lawn mower gas poured straight down the thermoquad
Scott. I've found that withmy diesel pickups and big trucks too, a "winter front" of some sort in front of the radiator goes a long way to conserve heat for the heater. Cheers! Todd Konoske the retired trucker.
You can't brush off Ontario snow like you Albertans do, ours starts as an icy bottom layer with crusty additional layers on top. Invariably the bottom layer gets into the door frames and keyway freezing everything shut and locking the owner out of the car. After a quart of lock deicer and a couple gallons of windshield washer antifreeze you get into your car just to find the diesel fuel lines have frozen. Happy Canadian winter to one and all!
Plus plus plus. In that temp, I would have thought about taking a battery and gas to that car. Then, I would have reconsidered while I had a shot, or two. Absolutely perfect. Well...perfect might be the 72 Fury, but I have vicariously loved this Newport since I found the channel and fully endorse it's return to the spotlight. Old cars in the snow for the win!
We used these for years, and we got along just fine. I put studded snow tires on my '67 GTO, and ran it for two winters-I would be put in jail for that today-LOL-Cheers!
I remember the 'will it run' and I've seen it just parked in the same spot week after week on the show and thought to myself "That's one lovely example of 1970s Barge-storming goodness. Why isn't she being driven?"....and today I found out! Must be other videos in the collection that have more of this beast in it, so I must have missed it when I last did a walk through the back catalogue....so time to go look again, eh? There's something about that car that makes me smile. Whether it's the definitive Chrysler starter (one of my Top 10 in the "starter noise" category), her VERY early-70s lines, the colour, vinyl roof, the interior, dash layout.....or just the fact she's an honest, big, non-flashy or overdone in any way, BIG vehicle, I'm not sure....or maybe it's because she's ALL that! Whatever, I love the beast and look forward to seeing you out and about in it over the next few months. Man - all that snow! Looks like winter has definitely come to Alberta. A pity that summer has not come to Auckland, New Zealand yet. Nights are cold and we've had two weeks of raining every darn day. Then again, the rain is warmer, so we must be getting toward the dry season.....I hope! I just wish it would stop filling up my cars through their leaky windscreen seals! Ah well....all the best and looking forward to seeing the show again this week.
I love that car....I have a 1970 Chrysler 300 2 door hardtop, 440 that I restored..Gets as many if not more looks than my 1968 Charger RT...People love the 300,plus I bought a washer and dryer and it fit in the trunk,who needs a truck!!! Comfortable and also reliable..
Hey Scott, Glad to see you found a use for your Newport, it sure is a beast! My dad was a Mercury guy and I learned how to drive with his '71 Monterey 4dr. Hard top. It had to be just as big as your Chrysler! I don't know how I ever learned to drive in that thing, the first time I sat behind the wheel it looked like the hood took up both sides of the road! I remember going out with dad once and I over steered turning onto a country road and put her in the ditch. He got her out and we went home, I threw my temp license in the garbage can said "I'm Done"! My dad never took me out again, it was up to my mom from then on!! We fought like cats and dogs but she got me through it and I got my license on the second try. Later, dad did come through and taught me how to drive a manual "3 on the tree" when I bought my first car, a 1948 Plymouth sedan. They're both gone now, but I have a lot of great memories of them and the cars we owned. One thing I remember about that '71 Merc was the vinyl upholstery it had. Here in Wisconsin in the winter those seats would give you the most painful static shocks! you could see the sparks arcing from your finger to the door handles, man I hated that!!!!!!

I've been dailing my 1969 Fargo in the Saskatchewan winter this week because my modern car (70s volvo with studs) needs some repairs. She starts right up, although the heat leaves a bit to be desired.
That cold mopar starter whine really brought back the memories. For me it was the mid 80's, Northern MN, a 68 Satellite, a slant six, and sub zero temps at 7:00 AM. Had to get to school, didn't wanna ride the bus. Come on dammit, START! Honestly, it always started, and it always ran on 4-5 as it warmed up. The smell in the frigid morning air is unforgettable.
Warms my heart (and hopefully your feet with that heater!) seeing a Newport on the road. Just threw the studs on last night after another snowfall. Filled the rust in with some ice and snow for some winter bondo. Ready for winter beater time!
the Newport always brings back fond of my brothers 71 Chrysler 300. We went everywhere in it, until the good old PEI winters rusted it out. It was a 4 door hardtop ,dark blue with all white interior and i believe it was a 440.
There is a whole generation (or two) that don't know the joy of winter driving a rear wheel drive car. I took my driving test in the middle of winter on snow covered roads driving my dad's "79 Ford LTD. I guess the testing guy was impressed enough that there was no crash that he decided to pass me!
Love the big Chrysler cars. Comfortable riding anywhere, always warm in the Winter. Because of their rearward weight, with a decent pair of snow tires, they'd go just about anywhere you needed to go in your city. Well, unless your city's "streetscape" resembled San Francisco's uppity up ups and downdiddy'own downs. Then you put on the Weed V-Bar tire chains! BTW I got a delivery update, my Fury Shirt should be here Saturday!
A guy at my work is Daily Driving a '68 Newport 4 door sedan. A nothing special car, except great winter beats like your '72. Glad to see the 72 pressed back into service, I think driving them keeps them in better shape than letting them sit.
I'm glad you've revived the Newport Scott, I love C bodies and would love a 70 Fury or Polara 4-door to drive around England's countryside - the problem is, a C body is bigger than my village!
Did these have the gear reduction starters? And I remember the seeming eternity waiting for the starter to stop spinner in order to try to start the engine again. My maternal grandfather was a Mopar fan. My first and only Mopar was a ‘77 Cordoba 😬. What I remember mostly was wondering which would burn up first - the valve cover gaskets (thank you Lean Burn systems) or the starter from all the difficult starts 😂
dodge chryslers were the Alcoholics of sucking back as much gas as they could just to start and then all of it when driving. love those days great to put it back in action. cheers mate.
Oh yeah! It's Friday and the Newport is back! I just say, I think you made the right decision. Why but something else, when you've already got what you need, in your own yard. In my experience, buying another car just brings unknown problems. At least you know every problem with the Newport! 😃
My best winter starter was a 1971 Lesabre with the Buick 350 with 147K miles on it. 1981/82 was a brutally cold winter in Calgary and it was -43C with roughly 15KPH wind out of the NW. The car was not plugged in and facing north. It took 3 or 4 tries to get the old girl running on 3 or 4 cylinders and another 5 mins to get it running on 8. Not bad for a beater. 🙂
Man after my heart. As one who has slung more than his share of big old iron down icy Iowa winter highways and byways I appreciate your decision to put the Newport on the road for your winter driving pleasure. Not only does the mass provide safety and comfort to you but the sheer size of the product is subliminally intimidating to others around you thus causing them to unconsciously check their errant winter driving before they become a threat to you. Maybe.
Scott, why don't you do what Mustie1 does for his winter cars? He sprays the underside with chain oil and lets the road grime build up so it has a crust on it to prevent it from rusting. He even shoots it into the frame cavities.

The best winter beater you have. Though you should know, when running your old mopar cold to warm it up, put the transmission in neutral! It won't pump trans fluid in park. That means no transmission fluid lubrication! Will make that transmission last way longer. This from a 33 year transmission Chrysler guy. Cool video Scott!

Scott, although you're much younger than my dad, your cold starts always remind me of him. No matter how cold or how much snow. Every vehicle on the property had to be started and "limbered up" for when the roads were open again. One very cold winter, my 74 Pinto was the only thing that fired up. Dad had a 79 Luv 4x4, mom had an 80 Citation x11. All the neighbors had big barges like your Newport. The neighbors shoveled our street so my little Pinto could jump start them all. I love you and the channel.
My father's '53 Pontiac Chieftain would always start, no matter how cold it got.

I took my test in a '73 LeMans 4 door sedan, and somehow passed the parallel park too. Luck was on my side that day, because I never even practiced

My folks bought a 1968 New Yorker when I was in high school (1983). It had a high compression 440 which moved the old 4440 pound beast around respectably. That car had the BEST, HOTTEST heater of any vehicle I have been around. We had cold snap of -30⁰F around Christmas and the old Chrysler sat outside. It started EVERY time!
Driving the Newport is a smart move because you know the car what it needs no surprises happy motoring 😀👍
If it quits, check the plastic timing gear. I had one break on Mom's '71 Fury. Dad had to help me with that one, it was my first time tearing into a V-8.

Once upon a time, in1969 with a foot of snow on the ground in Omaha, my winter beater at age 16 was a 1964 Corvair 4dr red in color and no heater ducts and had to operate the wipers by hand reaching under the dash. The Covair would get around never getting stuck, just a minor inconvenience of hand-powered wipers and three layers of socks, and a few cans of canned heat.. great memories and times of my youth.
Had one in the late 70s. Man I could smell that exhaust when it fired up! Great video.

Cool !! The Newport reminds me of a guy I used to work with when was around 18. He was about 24 and a US Navy veteran. he had a 1973 Fury III he called "The Riverboat". He was the best. I thought I knew how to drink until I met him. Lotta fun times...

the sound of that 400 idling hard being shoved into drive and then reverse over and over again brought back fond memories of my dad trying to drag our 79 winnebago out of its grave every june for our summer camping trip, he would have to fight a fuckin war just to get that 440 to idle, let alone move foreward and backwards. many a giant cloud of exhaust made by many a jug of lawn mower gas poured straight down the thermoquad

You can't brush off Ontario snow like you Albertans do, ours starts as an icy bottom layer with crusty additional layers on top. Invariably the bottom layer gets into the door frames and keyway freezing everything shut and locking the owner out of the car. After a quart of lock deicer and a couple gallons of windshield washer antifreeze you get into your car just to find the diesel fuel lines have frozen. Happy Canadian winter to one and all!

Plus plus plus. In that temp, I would have thought about taking a battery and gas to that car. Then, I would have reconsidered while I had a shot, or two. We used these for years, and we got along just fine. I put studded snow tires on my '67 GTO, and ran it for two winters-I would be put in jail for that today-LOL-Cheers!

If you had just started it ONCE during the month of October, it would have fired right up!!! One of the best automobiles ever made.
I remember the 'will it run' and I've seen it just parked in the same spot week after week on the show and thought to myself "That's one lovely example of 1970s Barge-storming goodness. Why isn't she being driven?"....and today I found out! Must be other videos in the collection that have more of this beast in it, so I must have missed it when I last did a walk through the back catalogue....so time to go look again, eh? There's something about that car that makes me smile. Whether it's the definitive Chrysler starter (one of my Top 10 in the "starter noise" category), her VERY early-70s lines, the colour, vinyl roof, the interior, dash layout.....or just the fact she's an honest, big, non-flashy or overdone in any way, BIG vehicle, I'm not sure....or maybe it's because she's ALL that! Whatever, I love the beast and look forward to seeing you out and about in it over the next few months.
Man - all that snow! Looks like winter has definitely come to Alberta. A pity that summer has not come to Auckland, New Zealand yet. Nights are cold and we've had two weeks of raining every darn day. Then again, the rain is warmer, so we must be getting toward the dry season.....I hope! I just wish it would stop filling up my cars through their leaky windscreen seals! I love that car....I have a 1970 Chrysler 300 2 door hardtop, 440 that I restored..Gets as many if not more looks than my 1968 Charger RT...People love the 300,plus I bought a washer and dryer and it fit in the trunk,who needs a truck!!! Comfortable and also reliable..

Hey Scott, Glad to see you found a use for your Newport, it sure is a beast! My dad was a Mercury guy and I learned how to drive with his '71 Monterey 4dr. Hard top. It had to be just as big as your Chrysler! I don't know how I ever learned to drive in that thing, the first time I sat behind the wheel it looked like the hood took up both sides of the road! I remember going out with dad once and I over steered turning onto a country road and put her in the ditch. He got her out and we went home, I threw my temp license in the garbage can said "I'm Done"! My dad never took me out again, it was up to my mom from then on!! We fought like cats and dogs but she got me through it and I got my license on the second try. Later, dad did come through and taught me how to drive a manual "3 on the tree" when I bought my first car, a 1948 Plymouth sedan. They're both gone now, but I have a lot of great memories of them and the cars we owned. One thing I remember about that '71 Merc was the vinyl upholstery it had. Here in Wisconsin in the winter those seats would give you the most painful static shocks! you could see the sparks arcing from your finger to the door handles, man I hated that!!!!!!

I've been dailing my 1969 Fargo in the Saskatchewan winter this week because my modern car (70s volvo with studs) needs some repairs. She starts right up, although the heat leaves a bit to be desired.
That cold mopar starter whine really brought back the memories. For me it was the mid 80's, Northern MN, a 68 Satellite, a slant six, and sub zero temps at 7:00 AM. Had to get to school, didn't wanna ride the bus. Come on dammit, START! Honestly, it always started, and it always ran on 4-5 as it warmed up. The smell in the frigid morning air is unforgettable.
I always loved the sound of those starters!

the Newport always brings back fond of my brothers 71 Chrysler 300. We went everywhere in it, until the good old PEI winters rusted it out. It was a 4 door hardtop ,dark blue with all white interior and i believe it was a 440.
There is a whole generation (or two) that don't know the joy of winter driving a rear wheel drive car. I took my driving test in the middle of winter on snow covered roads driving my dad's "79 Ford LTD. I guess the testing guy was impressed enough that there was no crash that he decided to pass me!
Love the big Chrysler cars. Comfortable riding anywhere, always warm in the Winter. Because of their rearward weight, with a decent pair of snow tires, they'd go just about anywhere you needed to go in your city. Well, unless your city's "streetscape" resembled San Francisco's uppity up ups and downdiddy'own downs. Then you put on the Weed V-Bar tire chains! BTW I got a delivery update, my Fury Shirt should be here Saturday!

A guy at my work is Daily Driving a '68 Newport 4 door sedan. A nothing special car, except great winter beats like your '72. Glad to see the 72 pressed back into service, I think driving them keeps them in better shape than letting them sit.
I'm glad you've revived the Newport Scott, I love C bodies and would love a 70 Fury or Polara 4-door to drive around England's countryside - the problem is, a C body is bigger than my village!
Did these have the gear reduction starters? And I remember the seeming eternity waiting for the starter to stop spinner in order to try to start the engine again. My maternal grandfather was a Mopar fan. My first and only Mopar was a ‘77 Cordoba 😬. What I remember mostly was wondering which would burn up first - the valve cover gaskets (thank you Lean Burn systems) or the starter from all the difficult starts 😂
dodge chryslers were the Alcoholics of sucking back as much gas as they could just to start and then all of it when driving. love those days great to put it back in action. cheers mate.

My best winter starter was a 1971 Lesabre with the Buick 350 with 147K miles on it. 1981/82 was a brutally cold winter in Calgary and it was -43C with roughly 15KPH wind out of the NW. The car was not plugged in and facing north. It took 3 or 4 tries to get the old girl running on 3 or 4 cylinders and another 5 mins to get it running on 8. Not bad for a beater. 🙂
All it needs is a block heater, rear snow tires and a "My Carbon Stomp Footprint" bumper sticker 😀

Man after my heart. As one who has slung more than his share of big old iron down icy Iowa winter highways and byways I appreciate your decision to put the Newport on the road for your winter driving pleasure. Not only does the mass provide safety and comfort to you but the sheer size of the product is subliminally intimidating to others around you thus causing them to unconsciously check their errant winter driving before they become a threat to you. Maybe.

Had 67 plymouth vip '71 Newport custom. 75 dodge royal Monaco 68 plymouth station wagon. Loved them all. Great start and excellent heat.
Scott, why don't you do what Mustie1 does for his winter cars? He sprays the underside with chain oil and lets the road grime build up so it has a crust on it to prevent it from rusting. He even shoots it into the frame cavities.
As you rumble around in the cold, "Love The One You're With" seems a good song to be rockin in that Newport. Love it!

That bone chilling, frigid footage of cranking up the frosted over Newport brought back memories of my same experience.
