  • Join us for this virtual city walk in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. A tour of the necropolis is one of the top things to do in Glasgow.
We start our Glasgow walking tour by Police Box #3 on Cathedral Square. This converted 'Doctor Who' style police phone box now serves good coffee to locals and tourists alike.
Our tour takes us past St. Mungo Museum Of Religious Life & Art, into Glasgow Cathedral, followed by the Victorian cemetry known as Glasgow Necropolis before finishing at the Drygate craft brewing company.
    Route:
    00:05 Police Box #3
00:15 St. Mungo Museum Of Religious Life & Art (on the left)
00:50 Cathedral Precinct with view of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary
    01:15 Glasgow Cathedral
    03:25 Church Lane gates
    04:34 Glasgow Necropolis
08:25 Views across the Glasgow Royal Infirmary
22:36 Part exit onto John Knox Street
    24:10 The Drygate Brewing Company
From Glasgow Cathedral, through the Necropolis to Drygate Brewing Company.
Some of you have asked how we afford to travel so often and so cheaply...we use this service for all our accommodation- bit.ly/livingwalks

I recall a dull and dreary Saturday afternoon in the winter of 1985, shooting several rolls of Ilford FP4 on my newly purchased Nikon FG20 - Photography heaven (no pun intended!!) And not seeing a single person for the hour+ I was there. Strange to think it has become one of Glasgow's stranger, but incredibly popular tourist attractions!! Great vid and thank you for bringing back the happy memories of my native city :-)

Great video and Glasgow has loads of cool cemeteries, one just 15mins walk to the north is Sighthill cemetery where I spent so many happy times as a child. The stories on the gravestones are quite horrific, families of 14 members all dying of typhoid, and the endless lists of infant mortality in families or if you see small groups of trees that's where the unmarked Cholera mass graves are situated. My favorites were those who perished in the Napoleonic wars, fighting and dying in far off lands and those of the 1750s - 1790s who's gravestones are quite remarkable for the history they reveal.

@@LivingWalks I must mention, in your video clip towards the end as you exit the gates and walk across the road, just as you start walking down the street that is exactly where Gran's house was on John Knox Street ,, ( long gone now ). My oh my, such memories ,, a little further down was a dimly lit butcher shop where Gran would send me with a shilling to buy mince " for the tea ".
The bridge that leads to the Necropolis is called The Bridge of Sighs ,, aptly named as I'm sure you would agree. I used to stand under that bridge and shout hello ,, it had the most wonderful echo ,, fascinating to an eight year old.
Also my Gran forbid me to cross over the street ,, to quote, " there's very bad men locked up behind those walls and they hung a woman in there ,, oh yes it sure had an effect ,, scared the hell out of me.
All those memories good and not so good of growing up in the early 50's ,,, it was nice to visit Glasgow as a wee boy but I was quite happy to return home to " my Island " ,,, Rothesay, Isle of Bute ,, have a great day ,,

I was born in the Royal Infirmary Hospital in 1948, grew up on Alexandra Parade, behind the Royal where they stoked the Boilers, a Tenement slum, my cousins lived around the corner on Wishart Street and we all used to play in the Graveyard as that was the only grass we ever knew and as you are walking over the bridge thats Wishart street underneath. Ark Lane would lead down to Ladywell and the Tennents Brewery, I went to Golfhill School at the top end of Ark Lane, the school closed down years ago. Never heard of Drygate but it looks real nice but then so does all of Auld Glesga Toon these days, unlike the shitehole it was where I grew up in it... I left in 1966 and never lived there again. But Glesga, as we called it, is still with me.

@@LivingWalks : Growing up in a slum does not evoke good memories however you can take the boy out of the slums but you must take the slums out of the boy, and I have achieved the latter.
