Just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching your family accomplish your goals. You are all working hard together to make your lives enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
here is a thought. build a small coffer dam around the drain pipe. the water could rise and then flow over the dam to exit the existing pipe. you could also us a couple of 45 elbows to raise the pipes inlet. Nice to see you building again. Give Gina a great big hug. That lady is awesome! Right there beside you, and not afraid of working with tools.
If you want a deeper larger pond, good reason to proceed. Might consider adding a step down from the pilings to the walk way. If any of your family or friends visiting have any physical challenges you could ramp the transition vs step down to give access to all. Pond seems pretty happy at it's level...sometimes simple ideas like an extra foot of water opens up flood gates (no pun intended) :D not a homesteader, but enjoy all your family shares about your journey. God bless all of you as you transition one one home to the next....Jim
what you need on the off-grid property is a wood mizer LT70 sawmill make your own wood, you have plenty of trees on the off grind property. also for the new house that you want to build I think it saves a lot of money. and it's also fun to make videos for UA-cam. greetings from the Netherlands
Not code unless you get the lumber dried and graded for a house. However you can use ungraded for outbuildings and barns so it would be wise in the end. Just have to buy framing lumber for any place that is used for human housing.
Cover for the trout from flying predators , that's why you're the farmer , and good to see lumber prices falling. Its gonna be a very nice week , enjoy kids !

Howdy Joseph - that first day back at work is one of the hardest. You're still in the afterglow of the vacation, and that helps for a while, and then WHAM - you realize you need a vacation as you already mentioned! You can do this! Onwards and upwards - the next vacation will be here before you know it! 👍
Having had a pond or two, I can tell you that you are really gonna like the overall effect when you bring that pond up 8 or 10 inches... It will really look different... Good start on the dock...
GOOD MORNING!!! GINA, the one we had grow up was a bit wide and the approach was little more stable due to large post that was on walkway buried in ground to stabilize the approaching the floating pond deck we had a latter to use at the end so climb in and out, we didn’t like the walking in the mud. The post was left tall & a short post was just attached to the deck not ground so we had a little railing to hold onto thin we was on floating deck. We had two very large ponds the one with deck was 40ty feet deep and other one was deeper than that spring feed we did most fishing was at the pond without the deck. The ponds were divided by one lane dirt road, the upper pond could drain into the lower pond, the depth of ponds was done by divers. Have fun we did growing up we never worried about falling in we, had our latter to climb out, if you walked out the pond, would be over our heads so fast but due to mud we didn’t walk out unless we had to. May God Bless You…
JudithB Well, never built a dock, but I think 2 barrels on the end, or 3 barrels as wings was a good idea! I would add a swimming ladder on the end too. Boat cleats for the kayaks too. I would be fencing pastures, getting pipe corners cemented in, and road built to house site instead of toys.
Reminds me SO much of my brother. I have learned to bite my tongue. I love him too much to want to start an argument over something silly, like dropping the old refrigerator off the deck and down into the neighbors yard.
Al: Great start on your new dock! I'm not sure that just one barrel will be enough support if you have more than just a couple of people on it at the same time. One way to achieve several benefits would be to consider adding a Tee-piece (of similar dimensions as your original) across the outer edge of the dock and add a couple of barrels under it for extra flotation support. This will not only increase the dock's stability, it would provide more casting space when several people want to fish at the same time. If visiting kids want a place to jump or dive off, you've met that need too. Just a thought for you to consider.
Good morning, Lumnah family! I'm a little surprised you didn't build in your shop and haul it to the property. It appears to have turned out just fine. Maybe two barrels, lengthwise for the next one for stability! Love the progress, stay the course!
As a fellow New Hampshireite….. I welcome all the rain. Certain areas of the state are finally starting to come out of the drought status. Looks good so far.
Good morning now I love your custom-made fly fishing platform that you're making for the catching rainbow trout on the pond. Have a great day young man much peace and love from Northeast Texas🤠🇺🇸
Al up here in the U.P. floating docks that the DNR put in on our remote lakes you need to put U-Bolts along both sides of your dock and drive galvanized pipe down into the ground underwater.... That way it will minimize the sway in your dock, also if you can find something similar they use these new plastic cells underneath that are rectangular and seem very robust but there's no reason that the barrels shouldn't perform just as well as long as you anchor the dock like I said earlier in this message!!!! It looks great thus far though, keep it up I'm loving it!!!!
We have a spring fed pond. Did have cat tail on one side for baby fish to hide in. Lots of fish. County cleaned out all the cat tails and now very few fish. Always leave a few cat tails over the years as you will be cleaning out some every few years.💕💕💕💕
Phew that's a relief is over the pond ,,thankfully don't need too we don't have fire arms,,good luck in your new adventure it's going to be one roller coaster 🍺🍺
What was Gina's reaction when she saw that you were swimming all by yourself the other day? I really like this new format where you only post every couple of days. It gives me time to rewatch your videos in between posts. I get to see things I missed from the first time that I watched it. I had up to 60 subscriptions and I whittled them down to about 5 and Lumnah Acres is one of those 5. You guys are GREAT vloggers!!!!! Mahalo from Hawaii!!! Aloooooha!!!!
PVC pipe driven into the pond bottom will allow the dock to move up and down, but offer stability as well when you mount sleeves to the dock in which to put the pipe. We did a floating dock in Wisconsin shaped like a T that way, but allowed us to retrieve it in the winter as well. You may adjust with filling the barrels with some water too, trying the height of the dock.
Good Morning, Lumnahs & all you viewers! That floating dock will be great. I hope you’ll be able to Gina out on it. She doesn’t look real thrilled with it now. Stay safe & healthy. Blessings, Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇺🇸👍❤️🥰🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
This is not the dock, it is only the walkway. Once the dock is built and all are attached properly it will be very stable and Gina will relax. Besides what is the worse that could happen? you fall in the water??? No worries if you can swim. Not even a long fall. Gina is a worry wart sometimes and Al likes to tease her on occasion it seems.
One piece of advise on the equipment that has hydraulic cylinders. Try to leave the cylinder ram retracted as far as you can to keep them protected from the weather. Even though the rods are hard chromed, they can still rust and that will destroy the seals and cause hydraulic leaks which can be expensive to repair or replace.
yep totally agree on this i was a hydraulic repairman for 40+ years with the Government, changed many a set of seals due to the rams corroding. when you grease you unit put a light coat of grease on the cylinders this will help protect them.
We had a floating dock at our lake property. It was about 30’ long and widened out at the end to about 12’ wide. We had three barrels per 10 ft section. It was a larger lake. We could pull the ski boat up to it.
Brilliant idea with the floating dock! Looking good so far. The walkway part of the dock I think will stabilize when you attach the 8x8 ft dock platform. If not, use two barrels lengthways beside each other at the walkway end. Connect walkway and platform with a hinge. To prevent sideways movement you could drive down say 2.5" pipes on either side of the walkway into the pond bottom.
I believe you said you were planning on attaching a dock, when you do the buoyancy of the dock will raise the end of your walkway and reduce the bounce. I recommend finishing the dock before you consider raising the pond level.
It's great watching you and the family. I have been a subscriber for quite some time and I know that you've probably been asked a million questions regarding where did you live before buying that much land, does your daughter go to public school or are you home schooling her, how did you know how to run a farm. Like I said there are a million questions, but most importantly will you be building another "Barn" for all that equipment. It would seem that you wouldn't want that New England winter to ruin it. If you are I look forward to watching and learning how it's constructed. Okay,, guess I've taken enough of your time Bless you all and don't stop your journey, because I wish I had the opportunity to do what you are doing.
Hi..... AL and Gina nice to see you love watching your videos, thank you for showing your video homestead chicken farmer garden 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👨👩👧👸👕👓🐩🐔🐓🐥🐕🐖🐈🐝🐠🌱🏡🎥👍👍👍
I wish, I had your confidence in working with wood this way. Not sure, raising the water level is a good idea, though. It will have an impact on the surrounding area and ground as well.
I made a 3 section dock on Lake Blasdale in Sutton New Hampshire. We used a chainsaw mill to make the lumber. Last time I was up there the dock was still doing well. I think it was '92 we made that dock.
what about setting a couple of your large boulders in to the ponds edge and then anchor to them. Seems it would be easier than pouring all that concrete. And look a lot cooler too.
Don't recommend raising the water level, you will have multiple consequences to fix as a result. I would also change the walkway float in two ways, add a second barrel and a couple of feet in length. Both of these can be accomplished easily at the float end with a doubler passing your existing float a couple of feet or more. I would set the end as you planned on your piers, this will allow movement do to any water level change and easier weed control at that end.
Sorry Ali I saw that coming! I kinda knew the barrels would shift!🤣 made the same mistake myself... awesome on the dock build, will make fishing a lot more fun... 👍🙏💥🎉🎊 I was just looking, can you make a wooden spill gate for the pipe? The thought was, a gate you can slid up and down to control the level!
The lumber that has been stored in warehouses from the bidding war is gradually being sold off and now we are getting back to normal prices. There was far more framing lumber stored than treated. Love the drill/hammer combo you have there. The battery is real strong and can take that beating.
You should put another floating dock over across the pond by the big rock, too. Maybe you could put a little ladder off the end of it(the dock) so you can climb up it to get out when you go swimming.
My father loved fishing and would go every other weekend. My mother finally told him, if he catches them he has to clean them. 😆 She got used to the store bought, where they clean it for you, during the winter months

Al, when I lived in NJ, I used to repair the docks at my marina. We found that barrels weren’t stable enough. We used styrofoam that measured about 10”x10” and I think they were about 8-10 feet long. Since they were flat, the docks were pretty sturdy. I’m guessing that you will start the house maybe next year? If you lived down here, you’d have beautiful weather all year long. I sometimes miss the 4 seasons.
@@Naplesfrank154 We did that also in Missouri but then found that the Styrofoam allowed bad algae to grow on it. Bad for the environment. Maybe if cut to size then coated with something. Do some homework.
Don’t worry about raising the water level. All youu have to do is put a chain in between the deck gang plank and your concrete piers. This will allow fluctuation the game plan going up and down with water level
Good morning AL. Since you are in the planning stage for your house building do plan to include rainwater harvesting and solar power system. You may need a couple of underground or over ground tanks to store the harvested rainwater. Or if you are planning to have a bore well then you can also plan to direct the excess rainwater to go into your borewell to refill the underground aquifer.
@@christinedehn3257 Actually it could work. Off Grid with Doug and Stacy have above ground storage in Northern Central Missouri with frost lines of three and half to four feet but they have thousand gallon tanks inside a barn that is heavily insulated and that is perfect because they are harvesting off of a large metal roof barn for cleanest water and storing inside the building which is much higher than their cabin so good water pressure. Just takes some planning and such. Doug does not really believe in solar but you could have lots of solar on that same roof and still collect the rain water killing two birds with one stone. Actually three birds as it would be a great storage space for equipment as well. Think large Morgan metal building on high ground with solar on stands above roof. Catch the sun, catch the water and cover the tractors and implements as well as the storage tanks for the water inside. Check it out. Essentially those tanks are higher than the roof of their residence, so while sitting at ground level in barn, they are like a water tower from the viewpoint of the housing. Top of the tanks are a good twenty feet above the taps in the house. Bottom of tanks are at least ten feet above taps.
I watch with interest as your plans unfold , I like your persistence .
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching your family accomplish your goals. You are all working hard together to make your lives enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

Good Morning Lumnah family. It’s sunny (well it’s still dark out) Naples here. I didn’t get a notice this morning and your video just showed up at 6:20. Important thing is you’re on the tube now. Blessings to the whole Lumnah family. ❤️❤️❤️
Your the second person who said that. I wonder why. It’s been out since 6
@@LumnahAcres after it finally loaded it said that it had be posted 20 minutes earlier. Well, that’s UA-cam for you. Haha Loved your cement mixing technique today. If it works, just do it. 😁🇺🇸
@@Naplesfrank154 - Yes - mixing the concrete down in the Sonotube with the ground water was a very good idea!
That seems an easy solution to me too. You don't want the piers to be sitting in water. Why not keep it the way it is?
Good morning AL. Since you are in the planning stage for your house building do plan to include rainwater harvesting and solar power system. You may need a couple of underground or over ground tanks to store the harvested rainwater. Or if you are planning to have a bore well then you can also plan to direct the excess rainwater to go into your borewell to refill the underground aquifer.
Above ground storage won't work in Al's climate zone. Frost line is 5' below ground. Above that everything freezes.
@@christinedehn3257 thanks for the comment..learnt something new today. Stay safe and stay blessed.. from Bangalore India.
Al,
I have had bad luck with barrels leaking/moving...... I use HMWPE encapsulated float blocks. Much better for floating docks in my opinion....
The key part is the "encapsulated" as the old Styrofoam blocks would grow bad algae on them. Bad for the environment.
Looks great! Thank you!
Great video and it’ll be great to just sit and fish soon
Great job 👏 Al! Can't remember if you are building your new home or having it built?
Can't wait for the next video
