IN my opinion, 30 miles of electric only range for a plug in hybrid of actual real world performance (e.g., hilly terrain, a/c) makes much more sense. This serves that “dual purpose” vehicle use case you mentioned for most people. This is particularly important for single car families. Great job!
I have the new Panamera 4S E- Hybrid and get 65km all the time in good weather ??? Motoman's test is going uphill though, that changes everything for all vehicules...should have turned around and recharge on the way down ;-)
I have a 2022 Cayenne e-hybrid coupe. I have now driven it for 4,000 miles and I love the car, except the range in electric mode and acceleration in electric mode. The range is about 15 miles in all electric even though it says it has about 30 miles when fully charged. A bit disappointing since I was planning to use it in hybrid mode to commute (60 miles each way) and use e-mode when home around town for errands. It lasts most of the time, but on a busy day the battery does not last. But I do plug it in each time I get home which helps. I found that in e-mode it changes gears quickly so it gets to speed slowly - certainly not Porsche like, but I was not expecting it to be fast, but again a little disappointing. BUT, in hybrid mode it's great, better than expected. It is quick off the line, seamless when moving between e-mode and gas-mode with great economy. I have been averaging 35 eMPG on long trips (>100 miles) and much better than that on shorter trips. Handling (4 wheel steering) and comfort (PASM) are worth the cost.
This is a bit low expectation. On my 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid, I was able to get 48Km (29Miles) if I drive the car with AC off and flat road and also keep the speed below 100Km (60Miles).. I noticed that turning AC on with cost you an additional 10% of the battery. However, overall, I get around 1600Km (1000 miles) on a full tank using almost daily charging with hybrid driving.
What was your elevation increase and what was your maximum (and average) speed? Most people will do in-town E-Power driving at speeds < 40-45 mph and on pretty level roads (i.e., few serious elevation changes). So I don't think you gave this a realistic test for what most people will use it for. I typically got 20-23 miles of all-electric range in local (non-highway driving) in my 2018 Panamera 4 E-Hybrid with 14-kWh battery pack, but I do know from personal testing that the Cayenne tends to get lower all-electric range with the same-sized pack than the Panamera does. That said, given local low-speed level-road driving, I would really expect this Cayenne to get 25-30 miles of all-electric range. I will say that this is disappointing, given that our 2021 RAV4 Prime gets consistently 50 miles of all-electric range in local driving with almost the same-sized battery pack (and the weight not all that different), so Porsche is losing electric range somehow through its coupled electric/ICE transmission drivetrain (Toyota's transmission is decoupled)...
This is an excellent review. My wife decided to spec a loaded one out and proceeded with an order - in part because of this excellent review. The vehicle is really fantastic. We have a '21 G63 and it's very SUV-ish and capable....but this is a whole different animal. People slam the price of a properly configured Porsche as if there are too many opportunities to "Waste money" on the vehicle - which is silly. You just get the option to buy the parts and functions that mean something to you. We just happen to like every possible available option. Of COURSE it is for a price! This is not a low end KIA. The price pays for the ongoing world class-leading R&D that Porsche does so well and without fail. It must be kept in mind that other brands are usually catching up to Porsche innovation 5-6 years later or more. The only SUV I would consider other this vehicle is the new DBX707....but that is just another AMG in a more beautiful skin!
Americans average 35 miles commute. Therefore, battery size needs to be average adjusted for cold winters, high speed driving. Minimum battery size needs to be approx. 35 KW!!! for a car this heavy!!!!
The more I learn about Porsche, the more I realize that making everything optional is not all about profits (I’m sure it doesn’t hurt), but also about allowing the buyer to buy the car they want. Cut out features they don’t care about, throw dollars at upgrades that matter to them.
To a certain extent that is true and many options are about personalizing the vehicle but Porsche is really pushing it because going through the options list when purchasing a brand new Porsche that is already significantly more expensive than its German competition, you can easily get offended if you see what the brand charges you for a lane change assist, a keyless entry, a sunroof or some ventilated seats. I think Porsche is losing customers over being much more stingy than the competition. Even rich people sometimes don't like overpaying. That's how some of them got rich in the first place...
I have the 2017 cayenne ehybrid. Agree that it needs more EV range. It’s supposed to get 14 miles per charge but the battery has degraded to a max charge of 12 and the real-world distance I get on a max charge is 9 miles, if I’m lucky. Now, if you factor in the 500 extra pounds for the ev drive system, those 9 miles are completely negated by the extra gas used to drive the car after the battery depletes. In other words, don’t get the ehybrid, it’s a total waste. If they get the battery up to 50 miles of range, that would be useful so that we could do the daily work commute without gas.
Yes for that kind of money a way bigger battery. And trade the clock for wireless charging. Beautiful interior. And a slicker exterior paint and wheel combo if your trading HP for MPG. especially at the 100k level. Cheers
*What are some of common and popular reported problems with these vehicles? I have heard, Porsche doesn't care much and deals with most of the consumer complaints as a "known issue" so you are screwed?*
But how fast does "E-Charge" or "Sport Plus" charge these Cayenne's? I have watched 4 of your E-Hybrid videos and you always mention that it has E-Charge, but never how fast it chargers like this. Can I charge it by idling in my driveway? How fast does it charge like this? Does it charge faster driving in Sport Plus? Is it ever worth it, efficiency-wise to charge the battery with the engine, or if you're out of battery should you just drive on gas power until it can be plugged in?
I agree about the bigger battery, but this review would have been easier to put in context if you gave more data about how tough the test was. Was it 100 degrees out with the AC set to 60, or a mild day? Did you climb a thousand feet? etc. It does seem like a good fit for the option of longer trips as a hybrid and daily driving on battery. But most people don't drive up a mountain to go to the shops or their work.
First off- thanks so much for this and well done! Agreed about the range! Precursor: I'm not much of a "car person" who knows a lot of lingo, please forgive me! I have a 2016 Cayenne Hybrid and I REALLY wish it went longer on the electric charge. I think I get closer to 14 miles. I also feel like (not sure how to find out) that when it regenerates the e-charge while I'm driving, it uses up way more gas than usual?
Setting it to e-charge is definitely going to burn more gas, as the gas engine needs to work to spin the generator. I think it only makes sense if you especially want to do one part of your trip in electric mode, e.g. to go up your neighborhood silently. Otherwise it seems better to let the car work it out in hybrid mode and recharge from a plug at your destination.
A Tesla Model X in equivalent chill mode, with the same amount of energy...how far would it go? Curious how much you actually got out of the battery for that 15 miles but it seems HORRIBLE economy when not using gas or doing a short hybrid test cycle.
I bought the 2022 Cayenne EHybrid. The check engine light comes on randomly after charging. Not every day after charging all night. Only some days. I've "had" the car for 26 days. 13 days in my possession. 13 days at the dealer for "service" but they have no clue what the reason could be for why the engine light keeps coming on!! They've already replaced a part on my brand new car- before telling me which really bothers me too. I looked into Lemon Law cases for Porsche and one big one was about lights on the dashboard. I live in Tennessee- any advice??? Please!!
I had a 2020 Cayenne e-Hybrid which Porsche purchased back from me because they couldn't fix the check-engine light. I then ordered a similar 2021 e-Hybrid. Same situation. Check-engine light will come on once in a while and for no apparent reason. Then it will turn off. My dealer has tried to be responsive but Porsche USA has been completely uncooperative with me. Completely. I've had other issues as well and they just do not respond. I love driving the car. It has superlative engineering with regard to handling, ride, and response. However, I've found Porsche to be arrogant. Their pricing for driver safety assistance and convenience features which they make optional and which are standard on many other brands is an example of this arrogance. I have a question for you: When you start your car do you know if the radio or audio is going to be on or not? I've had two Porsches and have driven a number of loaners. On every one of them there is no way to control if the radio is on or off when I've started them. Sometimes it's on and sometimes it's off, and this is independent of the state when I turn off the car. Never seen anything like it. Extremely annoying. Why don't they correct this? Another example of their arrogance.
Rennlist members seem to suggest that getting the optional 7.2-kW onboard charger may be the culprint. Did both you and Perry C get the 7.2-kW onboard charger?
@@cbatiau2528 Yes I did. This makes it far more useful than the standard 3.6 kW slow charger. I would hope that this isn't the source of the problem. Porsche ought to be better than that.
I test drove the cayenne, panamera, and Taycan. They all feel solid but no where near a bmw or Lexus overall package.. Branding power is strong with Porsche, iphone ppl and non car enthusiast will buy this to show off going to the mall or beach on the weekend.
Man, this is a one sad and depressing Cayenne. Very generic, very ... blah. But hey, at least the interior wasn't black lol. M, your sacrifices with dealing with these baby buggies is greatly appreciated. Excellent work, like always.
Porsche just add $300 to the MSRP and include wireless charging. Every smart phone you buy now has this feature. It's just insulting to charge $600 for that at this point.
I love Porsches I have one now McCann S but their pricing structure in upgrades are ridiculous that these cayenne with some options it’s gonna be $100,000 who cares about the gas money and saves you
Why is it that people who own this car never charge it? tax incentives really make up for the added price? Also isn't it nicer to drive on electric power, or hybrid mode? Mind boggling. They should have made a full EV Cayenne years ago.
I've realized Cayennes have the lowest resale value. I'm not sure why but that's good and bad I guess. I've seen many from 2010 or so listed on the Facebook marketplace for 7k or less before negotiation.
The e-hybrid Cayenne at $101,000+ is a joke. It is useless. Why? If one is planning to spend $100k+ for a car, they are not worried about the price of fuel and efficiency - unless it is a full electric vehicle. JMT.

I have a Panamera Sport Turismo 4-E Hybrid with the same system and I consistently do more than 30 miles (50km) with a single charge.
That would be my Porsche of choice right now. Well picked 👍
There have been occasions where I have done better - mainly in Panameras and at that, low 20s.
I have the new Panamera 4S E- Hybrid and get 65km all the time in good weather ??? Motoman's test is going uphill though, that changes everything for all vehicules...should have turned around and recharge on the way down ;-)
You all do understand that they are different cars right?
This along with the Panamera 4 and 4S (preferrably 4S) have been the actual peaches of their respective line-ups recently
This was probably the best driving test on the cayenne I’ve seen

It will probably have something wrong happen to it before it depletes its battery.
Coasting rather than regenerative braking seems to be the way to get further on battery. At a red light you have no choice of course.
