I had no idea what you were describing. You were talking about things I could not see in video possibly because of the speed. I would definitely not be able to duplicate this.
thank you very much for this video. i was able to use this to help me build one of my own. i just returned from yosemite where i successfully slept in the back of my outback and drove with 4 people around the park!
This is perfect. One thing I'd like to add is rear slide out drawers that would hold things like stove, supplies, etc. The trick is then finding a way to support the top half of the platform.
This is the best bed mechanism I've seen yet! If I were to remake this I would not make the bed the full width. As you said I would leave room for a detachable table for work, or to put a stove on to cook from the outside
Thanks! An improvement I'd like to make to the folding out is that you need to clear everything off in the trunk before unfolding it. I'd have to make the hinged section detachable or something. But until then it's still working great
I need room for two for fishing trips, so this would be PERFECT! I think I'd try to work it out so it covers the space around the wheel wells, too, but this is an awesome design.
Great video! I just bought the last 2019 Outback that my city had on the lot. Great financing. I too would love to build your bed. I don't intend to sleep in it often but it's nice when you want to take that one weekend trip but don't want to sleep in a tent. Awesome job guys!
I end up keeping it in the car all the time because I keep the drawers stocked with all the random things you always seem to need places (paper plates, jumper cables, cups, etc.)
This is like EXACTLY what I've been seeking for. I want to travel in my 2000 outback that I got just about a week ago, and had an idea to do this, but yours is the first that I've seen that I like honestly. What is your advice on the back seat angles when they are folded down? My outback seats set down at a much greater angle than from what I can see in your video; that's the only thing I'm trying to work out before building. Honestly very cool!
O-Kay. As a senior woman who will be living in my Outback, listening to you, and watching this I pretty much felt like I would be building a rocket ship instead of a platform bed.
How snug is the mattress? I am getting a 5th gen (2016) tomorrow and wanting to see if I could put in a mattress on the platform that was a twin xl instead of a twin (78x38 instead of 75x35). That looks pretty snug as it is. Awesome video and build work. Thanks!
I think that should be fine. I believe the minimum width is 42 inches. There is a couple inches on the side of my current mattress. You could easily lengthen the folding arms to support the longer xl. I have to slide the front seats up but there is easily 3 inches to spare in that direction. Just bring a tape to double check the measurements at the dealer haha
It's hard to have the mattress in the car with 4-5 in the car. It fits in the trunk but doesn't leave much room for stuff. If I need extra room I'll sleep on my Paco pad (best air mattress for camping, available from NRS). It rolls up smaller
I haven't had to be off grid too long. When I was on my 8 week trip I used public libraries for charging and getting work done. I was considering some sla batteries (I have a few large ones laying around) but haven't had time to rig up a charger that's car powered. Or you can use solar. I would charge and dry ski boots using an inverter while driving. And simple phone battery packs for the rest
Great work. Very interesting and smart. Just wondering though, why even make the bed platform? It looks like the seats fold down flat. Isn’t it just taking up unnecessary space? Couldn’t you just carry the mattress and lay it flat across the back and folded seats when needed?
The seat fold down relatively flat, your still at and angle and there’s a ridge where the seat fold, even with a mattress you can still feel this and it’s pretty uncomfortable. Building the platform allows you to have a flat sleeping surface along With some extra storage space
I don't have plans created. I tried to call out dimensions throughout the video. If you want me to generate a set, PM me and we can figure something out. Thanks!
Matt Bilsky hey Matt! Thanks for the response! Where can I message you at? I would even be willing to pay for some blueprints, I’m sure other people would greatly appreciate it as well, I think you have the best Subaru Outback design for a bed I’ve seen
Thanks and sounds good...Follow the email link on the contact page of my website: mattbilsky.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Contact_Info (sorry, trying to minimize spam)
I've used the car ones befor and and they're ok. But in places with large temp swings they end up half deflated in the middle of the night. And I think memory foam is more comfy for multiple night stints
What tri-fold mattress are you using? I am building a platform for my Volvo V60, which is almost the same size as the Subaru specs (I am going to move my front seats up a bit more).
For which part of the build? The majority of the screws were drywall screws in the 1.5"-2.5" range. For the small hardware I used the included screws and filed down the tips as needed.
What ever thickness materials you're using then double that less 6mm then that's the size screws you need so when counter sinking the screws they won't protrude. If you're fixing a plank/board to the depth of the materials then you can use longer screws as there's no chance of exposure from pointed end of screws. Hope this helps...
Ruth. I have to agree with you. This is a great project but in general I find that a high speed video is hard to watch. This video would be better to be slower with improved explanation's and not having to watch every screw placed at chipmunk speed.
I don't have an exact price. Right now I am working 7 days a week trying to finish the robot and would have to squeeze it in. About a day's work is a few hundred dollars. If you're interested, feel free to send me an email and we can take it from there.
While this video shows that you design and built a pretty cool, comfortable platform bed for your vehicle, as an instructional video it simply isn't any good. Too frenetic. Way.

Would love to have this in my 2017 Outback.

This is such a nice build!! I wish you were doing it professionally, would love to have one for my OB.
OMG... this is an awesome build. Now I just need someone to build it for me. LOL
That is pure awesome sauce right there. Fantastic !!

If that's what you came up with in a day, I'd like to see the 2.0!!!
Awesome build.
Check out The Hungry Hiker....she (and her dad) made a cool bed with a pull out table feature for her Subaru. Nice job on yours, too!
Brilliant! Thank you
Very cool project!
Nice job
thanks!
Great build, thanks for sharing !!
Nice!
Nice!!! I’m getting a Outback in February and I may build something like your bed frame. Thanks for the inspiration
do it!
Love those Outbacks! Have had two and camped Subnaru Style for 17 years.. Thanks for the ti[s in your video, very good, will try it out.
Really great design. Thank you for sharing your expertise
O-Kay. As a senior woman who will be living in my Outback, listening to you, and watching this I pretty much felt like I would be building a rocket ship instead of a platform bed.
Me: just throw memory foam on top of storage bins
Building one of these now, do you know the length of the fold out arms? Great video
thanks for posting, did you do anything else to it since?
Nice !! definitely considering making one like this

@@MattBilsky thank you for your response, it fit just fine if you move the seats up.
@@clayturner7378 I have to move my seats up even for the regular twin. I got pretty good on my road trip at fitting everything haha
Clay Turner just wondering if you ended up building one ? I just picked up a 2016 myself and plan to build one
killed it
That's great, just a little fast on the explanation of how you built it. No idea how you did that
Nice build! The mattress looks pretty thick when folded in pieces...where is that stored with passengers and equipment are loaded?
It's hard to have the mattress in the car with 4-5 in the car. It fits in the trunk but doesn't leave much room for stuff. If I need extra room I'll sleep on my Paco pad (best air mattress for camping, available from NRS). It rolls up smaller

Dbcooper 581 I see.
It would allow extra storage underneath the platform as well.
nice job, i'll be building for your old car
How much do you want to build me one for a 2001 subaru outback? I want it black and I want drawers under the bed at the end (also black)
Sorry, just too much going on :/
Do you have a written blueprint for this build? I would greatly appreciate a response, thanks! 🤙
I don't have plans created. I tried to call out dimensions throughout the video. If you want me to generate a set, PM me and we can figure something out. Thanks!

@@SHAMOWZOW37 did you ever get plans for this project? I would love to take a look at these, can even reach out to Matt
what length screws did you use to attach the hinges on the 5/8th plywood?
I used the ones that came with it and ground down the points
Great build! How long is it? I'm 6'3"
How is it that your back seats lay flat? Mine lay down but at an angle.
Mine are at a Slight angle too. I measured it using the wooden straight edge then cut the matching angle into the support
Do these measurements work for a 2009 outback?
Do you have these written out or design plan we could get from you?
Sorry, just what's in the video
Where did you buy the foldable mattress from?
I would also like to know where
There's an Amazon link in the description
Would this same design with the exact same measurements work for a 2005 subaru outback?
Most likely not. Subaru does a major redesign every 5 years but you can likely adapt the general concept
if I had a nickel every time when I watch a video and a UA-camr asks me to support them.....
Why not just get an air mattress?
I've used the car ones befor and and they're ok. But in places with large temp swings they end up half deflated in the middle of the night. And I think memory foam is more comfy for multiple night stints

can't I please just pay you to build me one? I'm in PA
It wouldn't be cheap, but if you're interested please pm me
Manufacture the whole thing out of high quality polycarbonate and I’d buy one.
I wish. But the molds alone would be 10k+ :/
The imperial system is cooked. Nice bed though.
The speed of the talking and video made it hard to track. I think it could have been a great video at double the length.
Video may be informative, but for me it would be useless because of the speed of it - I couldn't follow any of it.
Ruth. I have to agree with you. This is a great project but in general I find that a high speed video is hard to watch. This video would be better to be slower with improved explanation's and not having to watch every screw placed at chipmunk speed.
The car was engineered in millimeters. There is no conversion.
Can I just pay you to build one for me LOL. But seriously....
I'm in Bethlehem, PA so if you can pick it up...then yes!
How much are you charging to make one?

Seems unnecessarily complex
