Drop Shot Walleye

- The Drop Shot Rig has made its way into the walleye scene.
This is a finesse technique that lures walleye in with a small profile & slower movements. It can be baited with plastics or live bait which can entice even a negative mood walleye for a nibble.
What makes it similar & yet different from the techniques we already use?
It’s similar to Jig & Lindy fishing where you use a weighted lure to get to depth close to bottom. The pinch of the bite is almost identical.
It’s different because of what you can do with it, a small profile that can be fished shallow & out deep. Where as a jig you would have to upsize the head to 5/16, 3/8, 1/2 oz so the profile grows.. A Lindy rig is quite close with a bottom weight except it has a more free flowing action with a leech swimming on a variety of lead lengths. The Drop Shot stays more stationary & vertical. Where you control your water column depth by adjusting the dropper weight length.
The hook stays horizontal & should be checked occasionally depending what style of hook you have chosen.
VMC & Gamaktsu both make a spin shot hook that is held by swivels which keeps it horizontal and easy to tie.
VMC Octopus Hook with glow resin is what I have chosen. It adds that extra element of colour to catch attention.
➡️At approx 12:00 min Into video I show how to tie the drop shot rig I’m using.

Good video. The tutorial at the end was exactly what is needed by someone new to drop shotting. Thank you.
Thanks
There’s lots of techniques out there that put fish in the boat, but the drop shot is definitely a dandy.
Excellent video. Big help in how to rig a drop shot. Thank you.
Tight lines
I went out and did this in fast current river fishing and got a couple of nice sauger and an 18" walleye, perfect eating size. I had only been thinking about doing it...your video motivated me, and I am glad I watched! Got some nice fillets to munch on tonight, and I didn't even have to lug any anchors. That was last year, this year...all I can say is, "You are correct sir". My fishing has improved DRASTICALLY with a new trolling motor
SUBBED! Hope to see more info from you
That’s Awesome! I’m glad ya got to dip the net with that technique.
There’s so many cool ways to catch walleye, having a few techniques in the bag of tricks can sure be the difference.
That & fish fry’s… man nothing beats a fish fry. 👍🎣
Thanks for the sub, cheers.
Quite good . Nice idea with the swivel
Thanks 🎣
I have been drop shooting for walleye on lake Erie for quite a few years. I use 8 lb. Vanish fluro, gamagutso 1/0 dropshot, split shot hook, 7' Berkeley lightning rod, medium action. 3/8 to 1/2 oz sinker, depending on wind and waves. Usually have 2 feet between sinker and hook to minimize catching the sheepshead fish. I fish between 38 to 45 feet of water and catch numerous 4 lb smallies and larger along with the walleye. My bait are Berkeley maxi scent flat worms, black, smoke purple, and green. Never used live worms before but I will next time out. Also , I drift fish.
Awesome, it’s a great technique!
Very good video.I drop shot for smallmouth on inland and accidental catch’s are some times walleyes.I will try your set and target them walleyes ,looks like fun.
Thanks
Yea it’s pretty fun, you can use a half a night crawler, or leech for live bait. Some guys use gulp minnows or real minnows. It’s a good technique.
Those hooks work decent as well. I just started painting the resin beads different colors & clear coating them for a different look. Picts on Instagram @ surgeoutdoors_angling .
One day I’ll head to our only bass lake in Saskatchewan down south & try to snipe some bass. Bass fishing looks like a riot.
Good info!
Highly under rated walleye technique
Pullin anchors that’s where ya be! 😂😂
Lol
Never done this before!! But nice walleye
It works pretty good. 👍
So are you watching the line? Or do you feel the bite?
Feel the bite, let them take it & smok’em.
So when would you fish with this system over a slip bobber setup?
Deeper water is easier, also different presentation. Stays stationary.
I have some glow in the dark beads. I wonder how that might help the fish hone in on the rig.
They’ll work good, just like on a Lindy rig.
@@surgeoutdoorsangling So why a drop shot instead of a dropper loop? Seems to me that the dropper loop would get the bait out away from the main line.
It’s just what I tied. That’s all.
@@surgeoutdoorsangling You said "down south". Are you talking southern Canada? lol
Southern Saskatchewan
Ever try plastics with the drop shot?
Yup I’ve used plastics
For walleye I prefer real bait unless your on a bait ban lake. A few of those in Alberta & you crush walleye on plastics.
For perch I like plastics because they pick & steal a little more than walleye.
What rod and reel/reel size are you using ? Thanks
I was using a one piece St.Croix Premier 7 ft -PS70MLF-(4-10 lb) (1/8-1/2), reel is a Pflugger Supreme SUPXTSP30.
It seemed to work really well and has great feel. I use the same rod for Lindy rigging.
@@surgeoutdoorsangling ok nice. I use a medium power rod for walleye, wonder if I should try a ML but most of my walleye lakes are pike infested as well lol. Is the pflugger size 30 reel equivalent to size 1000 reels for Shimano? Or size 2500? Sorry I don't know my pflugger.
Also what are you using for your mainline?
ML will be ok even if you snipe some pike, the Pflugger 30 is equivalent to the 1000 Shimano, but If you want a 2500 on there it’d be fine.
Just depends what you want. 2500’s have a higher drag lb & their just a bit heavier on the rod. Play around with what you like. Can even throw each on in a store to feel it out.
Main line is just 10lb Power Pro Braid Moss Green with a 10lb Flourocarbon Leader on the Drop Shot end of things.
@@surgeoutdoorsangling why the ML over the medium? I've always used Medium, is the ML alot better for sensitivity? Using a medium Fenwick Techna right now. I wanted to get a Loomis walleye rod and I think most of their walleye rods are medium but feel like ML compared to other brands.
When do you use your medium power rods? Or do you even?
Definitely have to watch the brands your right. A Medium with one could be a ML of another.
My vertical jigging G Loomis 6’3 are M but basically feel like a ML. But a St.Croix I feel like you’d need a ML to compare.
I use ML for the sensitivity. Any technique where I want more feel, Lindy Rigging, Drop Shot, Slow Death rigging, Pulling Blades / harnesses.
I use Mediums for stuff like slip bobbing, bottom bouncing crankbaits, rip jigging, Bottom Bouncing in deeper water like 30ft +.
Using 1 piece rods also helps sensitivity.
STUPIDLY LONG NO NOTHING INTRO!! WHY????
Because I felt like talking and showing some hook sets.
Pretty much like every other person does some type of introduction to a video. This was mine.
