    Since the left wheel is reverse thread and the other side is not, I don't understand how you're able to tighten the nut by putting a wrench on each wheel, because if you use force in opposing directions you'd be loosening the other wheel while trying to tighten the wire brush wheel.

    • @suburbandiy
      @suburbandiy  Рік тому

      Hi Ross - right? It’s counterintuitive…I use the 2 wrench method to tighten the nuts. On the left wheel, the wrench holds the nut / wheel in place, and on the right side I use the wrench and tighten. It’s a weird feeling because instinctively you want to move the wrenches in the opposite direction.

    I’ve done the same I’ve had to remove the shield as it wasn’t going right in I’m not sure about the long-term effects of it though

    • @ukgardener973
      @ukgardener973 2 роки тому +1

      What I meant to say was that the shield is now not on the machine as it’s causing the wire wheel to become very tight so I’m leaving the shield off for now as you have done so also but now with the shield off the machine seems to be flying all over the place so I need to probably hold the machine down with something

      Hi UK Gardener, thank you for commenting! With the shield off, I do notice that the material the wire brush removes from the item makes a bit of a mess. But I haven’t noticed the machine being unstable. Does the bench grinder have holes to secure it to a table with bolts? Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/1jKqN1LtDKI/v-deo.html

    • @suburbandiy
      @suburbandiy  Рік тому

      Hi Ross… I don’t know the technical or functional reason why they’re threaded like they are. But I was able to get them tight by putting a wrench in the other end. Wondering if there’s someway to temp lock the wheel to tighten the nut?

    Hi, planning to buy one. I have a chinses grinder that runs very hot in 5 minutes with no load. Could not leave my hands on it for 3 seconds. I need a grinder for at least an hour continuous use. Does this one gets very hot? Hope to hear from you soon. Many thanks

      Hi Ro Si - Something is not right… it should not be getting hot that fast, especially with no load. I’ve used the Dewalt Grinder for long periods of time… no heat, no change in performance… all good. Time to replace your grinder.

    I can't see what your left hand is doing. when I have my left hand holding the bolt on the left side and go to tighten the right side, the left side bolt loosens, and vice versa. So what is your left hand locking onto on the left side? it certainly can't be the bolt because you would be loosening the left hand bolt while you are tightening the right hand bolt. it seems like the threaded configuration of this thing is as backwards?

    • @suburbandiy
      @suburbandiy  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Pat 747 - thanks for watching! In my left hand, I'm holding a wrench on the wheel nut, to keep it stable while loosing or tightening the opposite wheel nut.
      I don't know the value as to why it's designed that way. I recall being puzzled by it as well.
      Nonetheless, I was able to swap wheels and get them tightened and operational.
      BTW - did you subscribe? We've working on several more videos, including an updated tools sharpening episode.

      I have the same issue and am still looking for answer. There is no lock mechanism on the shaft that I can tell and the manual instructions don't seem to work for me. NPS's answer doesn't help. Is it possible you only tighten to some snug (more than that initiates loosening) and the rotation of the running wheel snugs it enough to be okay?

    • @suburbandiy
      @suburbandiy  6 місяців тому

      Hi Morton… I’ve been using the grinder for a few years now. I don’t know the mechanical dynamics of ‘snug’, but I can report to you, that neither wheel has been a problem… they have stayed tight; “snug”.

    Just wanted to point out you are using your adjustable wrench incorrectly. The movable jaw should lead or "point in the direction you are turning. You had it right on the installation, but backwards on the stone removal.

      I have this dewalt 8” bench grinder but having trouble loosening the right side nut (to swap out stones); the right side nut wont budge and then the spindle loosens the left side nut. (I did buy two 26 mm wrenches specifically to unscrew these nuts). Do both right and left side nuts unscrew counterclockwise or does one side unscrew clockwise and the other counter-clockwise? Any help/tips much appreciated...thx

    • @suburbandiy
      @suburbandiy  3 роки тому

      Hi Gullane G, thanks for watching and reaching out. I feel your pain. Assuming the 8" works the same as my 6", then yes, the short answer is they are opposite. Work both sides simultaneously. I changed the right-side stone to a aire wheel. I attached the wrench on the left side, and while holding it steady, I loosened the right side. Then spun-off the right side nut by hand. Tightening was the same procedure; hold left steady, and tighten right. Let us know how your coming along!

    I just replaced one of my wheels with the DeWalt 8" wire wheel and no matter what I try, the wire wheel wobbles so I have come to the conclusion that this DeWalt wire wheel sucks. I`m sending it back to Amazon and buying a better brand. Lately I have not been impressed with DeWalt at all.

      I just got a harbor freight wire wheel to go on my DeWalt 6" grinder and it looks like it has a similar potential issue as the one in this video. I believe it is due to the plastic bushings on the wheel. On the wheel I have, it is 2 separate pieces of plastic that insert from each side, and the bumped out plates that secure the arbor have room in them for the plastic to just come right out. I guess I'll have to fabricate something better. You could try maybe flipping the plates around, but then they seem to interfere with the shroud and/or main housing in that configuration. No idea why they make the hole oversized in the first place, and then "solve" it with these chintzy plastic bits!

      People don't run guards on the wire wheel because it's safer without and needs the clearance and they don't shatter like stones. It's safer because a wire wheel will grab something and pull it into the guard creating havoc and maybe involving your fingers.

      @@ceeweedsl you say people don’t run the guard because it’s safer then you say it can grab parts and possibly cause injury to your fingers? Which one is it?

    • @ceeweedsl
      @ceeweedsl 2 роки тому +4

      @@alcopower5710 You don't seem to understand. If you put a guard there then when it may want to grab, the guard will trap things inside the space and push them against the wheel making an easy release into a problem. Protection is a tricky thing. Not the right solution for wire wheels. Or else it would need a closed guard that doesn't let anything get caught between the guard and the wheel. But hey go ahead and do whatever you want. I know which feels safer to an experienced user.

    I typically cringe watching people doing stupid stuff but part of me was just waiting for you to get hurt. Decided not use the side guard and show everyone watching the wrong way to operate? Thought to yourself- that tool rest is lame I will just let it dangle there while I awkwardly tilt my garden tools into a spinning wire wheel. Gloves? Who needs all ten fingers anyway? By the way, your “years of grime” built up on your loppers tells me you have no idea what outdoor work is as well. They all look brand new and have probably just taken on some dust from sitting in your toolbox. Take this video down before someone gets hurt imitating your unsafe behaviors. I did like the background music though so there’s that.

      Just some points, 1st many dont use gloves on spinning tools as they can actually make injuries significantly worse by pulling you in and locking you there instead of just a glancing blow. 2nd I think the reason that he didnt put the side panels on was because the wire wheel rubs on basically everything and is pretty bad actually for the dewalt tool....not really his fault it sucks but also should have mentioned it sucks

      The guards are for stone wheels because they can crack and explode. Lots of people safely use wire wheels, buffing wheels and CBN wheels without guards. Machines with those kinds of wheels are frequently sold without guards. Anyone criticizing for failure to put the guard back on doesn’t know what they are talking about. Also no need for gloves as there is a risk of the glove getting caught. Some wear them and some don’t. You should be using eye/face protection particularly with the guard removed to avoid wire strikes. And I agree with someone else’s suggestion that you should remove the tool rest.
