- Four million people have been warned that they are at risk from Storm Éowyn in the largest real-life use of the government’s emergency alert system.
A rare red weather warning has been issued for central Scotland, the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland, where 100mph winds are expected to cause havoc. Forecasters fear that Éowyn may be the strongest storm to hit the UK in generations.
Storm Éowyn has already broken Ireland’s record for the highest wind speed, according to the Irish meteorological service.
A maximum gust of 114mph was observed at Mace Head, on the west coast, at 5am on Friday, topping the previous record gust of 113mph.
Met Eireann later said that the high winds had “interrupted data supply” from the station in Mace Head.
The mean wind speed record of 81mph, set in 1945 at Foynes, Co Limerick, was also broken during the storm, the service added.
