Storm Ciaran Lashes Cornwall - November 2023 - 4K Video

- Storm Ciaran is the third named storm to hit the UK in 2023. Arriving at the beginning of November the storm tracked south of the UK. The first signs of Storm Ciaran's arrival in Cornwall were on Wednesday afternoon when the swell on the south coast began picking up.
High tide on the Wednesday was at around 18:45 in Penzance. By this time the wind was beginning to pick up so I headed down to the Promenade to check out the waves. Obviously it was a little on the dark side but the waves were already battering the sea wall and throwing spray over the road.
I think the storm peaked overnight (it sounded like it at 4am!), but the tides (and obviously light) were more conducive to getting up first thing and heading to the coast. I was tempted to head to Porthleven given the southerly location of the storm, however, these days it is pretty crowded with photographers over there. Plus the wind was from the north west meaning whilst the waves might be more perfectly formed, they may also have been a little blown out. Instead I thought I'd try Sennen Cove first, were I too this epic photo some years ago (www.cornwalls.....
The cove was a little disappointing and Ciaran wasn't really hitting the headland with enough force. So I jumped in the car and headed for another of my favourite spots, Cape Cornwall. The Cape is basically an alternative to Land's End, and somewhat more spectacular IMHO. There were some solid waves coming in, but it still wasn't as epic as I was hoping.
The next spot should be instantly recognisable to Poldark fans as Wheal Leisure. Located at the foot of cliffs in Botallack this place is always spectacular. I decided that it has already been photographed enough to not risk life and limb getting a closer look and shot with my trust 100-400mm lens. I did spot a guy out on the cliffs - hopefully not as precarious as it looked!
After my nod to Poldark I chased Storm Ciaran around to a nearby stretch of coast along from the lighthouse in Pendeen. I love the cliffs here with the old mines on top as they give a sense of scale, and it really gives you an impression of where you wouldn't want to be...
Finally, as a further nod to Poldark, and lured by the thought of offshore winds creating huge, perfect waves I headed to Porthcurno. The tide was a little high, but there were still some awesome, barrelling waves to be seen off Pedn Vounder in the distance, and you could feel the waves crashing through the ground. By this time I'd pretty much used up all my energy storm chasing around West Cornwall. So headed home for some overdue breakfast.
Must be something to be in that house when there's a storm, with a big fire and a cup of tea. Lovely.
has to be tea definitely coffee
Wow dramatic wild Cornwall ,l can just imagine captain Poldark on horse back riding along the cliff top.
For some of us folk it’s a reality!!!! Not fantasy
Georgie disapproves of this comment. Did anyone else hear a frog croak?
Me too

Beautiful, beautiful Cornwall - rain or shine, Summer or Winter. Stay safe.
Couldn’t have said it better, our Kernow is our Eden on earth, come rain or shine she is beautiful!
Hi from Kernow 👋
Classic November Cornwall. Some lovely evocative views there. Thank you.
When the sea is calmer and more gentle there is nothing more beautiful than the sound of waves washing out upon the shore.
Absolutely breathtaking, the power of nature , keep safe everyone xxx
Much stronger than idiotic people who drive on the sea front.
@@sarahjones-jf4pr that’s me because storms are awesome
@@jetnight88 Your choice .
Stunning video of beautiful places. So many of my favourite areas. You're videos are a joy to watch thank you.
Thank you. They are a joy to make too!
Spectacular! Beautiful footage. I hope everyone was alright throughout the storm. Thanks for sharing.
Superb footage, many thanks from Newquay.
Cornwall has withstood so many storms but still comes up smiling every summer.
Like Brittany
Surfs up!
Awesome, thanks! The winds were terrifying around dawn just outside St Austell, I thought my roof was going to go!
COULD YOU ASK Dawn TO VISIT THE CHEMIST AND SEEK SOME MED'S FOR HER WIND????
Please stay safe. I hope you have power.❤
@Anita,same here,we moved into a newbuild last year I really cant see the roof standing up to another Cornish storm as powerful as that one, some of these new build companies could do worse than look to the old Cornish builders,I cant see my place standing up as long as those tin mines, these councils should be weather aware before they give permission for these new builds to go ahead😡🤑Cheers ☺
Thanks for that, it is beautiful. Been to a lot of those places when it was calmer.
Seeing the sea and its power is just breathtaking so great to see it like that. Can’t wait to come back x
Beautiful. amazing poweful ocean. Thank you for video
Some of those shots are breathtaking. Absolutely stunning. Paul
Nice to just watch nature. No gimmicks except for youtube covering up your beautiful ending shot with a preview. Thank you for sharing!
Ended at of those places in the summer. But that illustrates how shipwrecks were so numerous around that coast. Thank you.
Wet and windy. Nothing too unsual in old Blighty over my own long lifetime.
the power of nature is amazing
Well done, thanks for uploading.
VERY NICE...👏👏👏THANKS A LOT FOR SHARING. ENRICO - GENOA / ITALY
my favourite places. lovely shots.
This was a very exciting video to watch, thank you!
Beautiful thank you ☺
Brilliant Filming!... Thanks for Sharing....
Fantastic video 📹
great filming you captured it all well done
Beautiful
Cornwall is breathtakingly beautiful.. even in these conditions🌊
Not a patch on Scotland.
Fantastic footage, well done
stunning footage. Thanks.
So So beautiful & cozy, WiSHED I lived in Cornwall ❤
They say it's more beautiful and safer than, Cornhole.
The ponies were loving it...
Mother Nature showing who is the boss!
I live in Newlyn and its lovely to watch the storms hitting the promenade. The council should have put a break water out in the bay years ago to stop the damage on the promenade, but they never listen...
Awesome!!!
Beautiful footage!
The big long bungalow in Botallack, on the way to the Crown's, now owned by The National Trust belonged to my Grandparents, Aunty and Uncle. I used to play down the Crown Mines all the time as a kid, when visiting in the school holidays many moons ago ❤
@ sertinator, fantastic can you imagine that now? I love talking to the old Cornish people the stories they tell are wonderful, everything from the the old train drivers to fisher men,the R.N.L.I captain who couldn't swim? I met someone who was a geologist,he went down one of your mines,he could hear the stones rolling around on the sea bed, there are some fabulous stories to be told out there ☺
Lights were on there when I drove past, so certainly being put to use. Sadly the same can't be said for Botallack Manor Farm which has been boarded up for the last few years...
@@cornwallguide That's sad news about the Manor. Such a lovely building. I visited my grandparents bungalow some years ago. The National Trust people let's us in, but unfortunately it wasn't in the nicest condition. I wish, I could buy the building back from the National Trust and open up my grandfather's wood workshop (out building) up to continue on his amazing work.
Hopefully returning to Botallack next year 🙌🏻
Thank you for the reply. Great video btw 👍🏻
Much enjoyed thanks.
Well done, excellent footage. The one at cape Cornwall where you’ve filmed from is a bit more to the right . Whereas I’d filmed the previous big storm earlier in the year from the left of the National Trust car park. It’s good to see the storm for many locations. A fun day out!
Thanks Chris. I remember your footage from Storm Noah. Think you found the perfect spot, and the waves were a fair bit more impressive.
I was trying from a spot I got some good photos years back. Figured the extra distance would help fore- shorten the shot, but on the flip side being higher up doesn't work as well.
Oh well, always consider it a work in progress. So maybe the next big NW storm will see you there!
@@cornwallguide thanks for the reply . Every day here presents many opportunities . Yours is valuable in many ways. This time particularly I thought your travelling about different points really made your overall coverage brilliant.
The waves back when I did the videos at the cape I had crosswinds from the left & thanks to some handy bushes & my lump of a car the long lenses were not too bad.
You’ve been posting for years now & you’ve great footage throughout.
Noah was fun & Lord knows what’s next! Maybe next time we will cross paths . Keep it up! & stay safe 👍👁👁📷🎥
Good to see some places from my Cornish rambling years (1991-8): Pendeen, Botallack, Porthcurno etc..
Some great surfing waves.
I've got a spare board you can borrow...😬
It seems there's something spiritual about living near the sea...something ancient...un-nameable...those things you can feel, sense, but not name.
Beautiful dramatic scenes . Be careful!❤
I dream of this place
Great video, glad i live in the claycountry and not on the coast😊
@Katherine,to right,I've just moved but there used to be nothing between us and America,it got pretty scary at times,I've not moved far but more sheltered but still hairaising the other night 😂
2:13 Timestamp is awesome. Scary. Worrisome. Capture tha waves from that house including full sound. ❤
Great filming ❤.
The beautiful power of nature. I could sit and watch that sea all day long, and not sit at home and ‘stay safe’ as we are repeatedly told by morons on the telly.
Beautiful and terrifying. Be safe
@gigi,we are always safe living in Cornwall,we are very sea aware it's the tourists that cause problems but thank you ☺
It's a bit of a gust in October into November... Nothing even extraordinary about it... fact.
Nice shots though 😊
Nothing compared to 'The Great Storm of 1987'
Agreed but the way the people have been going on about this as if it was the beginning of the end is odd, we have this sort of storm in Cornwall nearly every year if not twice in a year and yeah it’s a little dramatic to watch all I notice are a lot of leafs and a few sticks lying around.
I do live on the north coast in the far west of Cornwall for context.
Are you quoting Ben Miller who said that on ‘Death In Paradise’ ? 😄
Nope. Just the way it's been described on lots of posts. I was there. Then I went to Wellington NZ in 92 and the storms here are regular.@@charliechristmas5147
@eks ,the 87 storm was a corker, I worked on the desk at the local police station, we were sending police officers out but they couldn't open the car doors when they got there ,the slate tiles were spinning off roofs, tree's OMG,the station was full of shocked people who had either been hit by a tree or had a very narrow miss, the kettle was getting a good workout,in the eye of the storm I dashed out to buy a sandwich and more tea bags then the wind started again even stronger and we were off again, my sergeant was laughing at my indecent file ( no computers in those days,) it was over a foot thick ,this storm was a baby ☺
Wild but beautiful ❤
A wheelie bin blew over in Norfolk....wish I had it on camera..
Yep, my wheelbarrow fell over, wish I hadn’t lent it against the wall now ,had to go out and put it in the garage ,it’s safe now thank goodness.
that lonely house looks lovely and i can just imagn it with sunshine . but i could not live there i would be a nervous wreck when the sea gets rough with huge waves .
It’s obviously an old house so must be sheltered by the rocks and has stood the test of time and storms.
The sea is beautiful
We were worried here in Guernsey but luckily didn’t hit us as hard as we expected, poor Jersey got hammered
Well, I bet it stopped the boats! Awesome!
She is in France too !
Beautiful pictures, that one of Sennan cove, the sea didn’t look too angry, I’ve been there when the waves were going over the top of the coast guard lookout and the water was running down the footpath into the car park.
Sennen wasn't quite what I was hoping for. It did splash over the top once, but not when I had the camera running. Not quite www.cornwalls.co.uk/photos/sennen-storm-splash-year-4323.htm
What a great video! Thank you! ❤
Really quite pretty in its own way. Just a typical Autumn storm, disruptive for sure, but names for a seasonal depression? Yellow & Amber warnings, Really? Over hype? Almost certainly.
I don’t think you would think over hype if the roof of your house had blown off or the windows of your bedroom had been smashed in by the wind while you were trying to sleep or the bottom of your house had been flooded?!😪
@@katrinaryan1739 I've every sympathy for anyone who has suffered loss or injury, I was merely pointing out that such storms at this time of year are not at all uncommon, however having watched the last 3 days of breathless weather reports, it was nowhere near as bad as predicted & vast majority came away unscathed for which I thank our Lord and saviour.
Absolutely nailed it mate 👌 👍
@@stevecooper6515 I'm almost 70, the weather generally behaves for the time of year, occasionally not, but generally as to what you can expect.
But what has changed is the way it's reported, hysteria, hype, it's the climate catastrophe clown show!
Storm Domingo is next, let's start panicking.
As for floods many towns for historical reason are built on or besides rivers, that says it all.
Besides the fact that the drainage in towns are no longer maintained, to save money.
Rivers that need dredging aren't dredged because of EU law, which we still follow, don't ask me why.
Subsequently the rivers more easily breach their banks & then it's claimed to be global climate disaster, or you hear, nothing like this seen in living memory, considering all the millenia it's hardly conclusive.
What about the Hurricane of 1703? The only known instance of a full blown hurricane. So was that global warming? Climate change?
They all go by this climate mantra, although there is no conclusive evidence to substantiate the claim.
Totally agree. 👍
Back in time traveler, 01/02/2023 the Delorean special. Woooooooooosh!
Extreme weather there. I Miss living in the South West.
Fantastic piece of work, thanks for posting, none of this shown on national news. Not just a few white horses, more like a stampede.
The beautiful house that you've put in the thumbnail, where is that? Need to see if it's an Airbnb, it's location is stunning!
Great view from that house.🥰
No fishing at Aire point today then? Not the worst I've seen down there by any stretch of the imagination. Good use of the longer focal length to make some of the shots far more dramatic than they actually were. Little known fact... Porthcurno used to be a deep water harbour until one winter in 1700's (As I recall) when a proper storm blew in and raged for an extended period of time. Green bay apparently was far sandier and millions of tons of sand was washed around the headland into Porthcurno filling up the harbour leaving it as a beach as we see it today. Now that would have been a proper storm.
🎉
At somebloke,I bet this one put the wind up (excuse the pun) the holiday home bunch😂 I heard a cockney woman screeching down the phone on radio Cornwall, wait as you say we get a proper storm😂
Yeah I know the types - I live with 'em (I'm n Essex) probably got a gaff down your way, where they only live in it for 2 or 3 months not giving the locals any chance of working and staying where they were born and bred. @@anni50ful

The Cornish Bays are truely a Piece of Paradise along the Westcoast of England. I never forget my Visit in St. Austell and St. Ives. Beautiful Fisher Boats and Harbour Scenery. So beautiful 💯😍👌

Очень красиво.. фантастика.
И чертовски опасно! Ветер до 50 метров в секунду - это не шутка!
So just a normal stormy day then!
Amazing weather, but then again every year our summer holidays in Cornwall were like that. 💦⛺️☔️
At 2.30 what's that in the water just above the chimney ?
@surfdude might be a sheep? No one reported missing hopefully .
Normal November weather like its always been.
Thank you.
Where's all the surfers who crave these waves?.
Speaking as someone who has surfed for the last 35 years, these are not good surfing waves. For starters you want offshore winds not howling onshores which usually accompany stormy weather.
incredible light and wind ...600mm lens??
Thanks. 400mm on a cropped sensor, so think it does work out at 600mm.
Newlyn had some fairly decent swells
The effects of Ciaran was extremely localised. I am on the coast of South Wales and it was abit breezy that is all, nit like this.
Someone told me yesterday their family were in Swansea and the eye was directly over at one point, so dead calm.
What was for breakfast?
Ha ha! Thought if I wrote enough no one would read it!
Anyway, I ended up having lunch and about 4 cups of tea.
