the contradicting thing for me would be scaling my lot Size but always getting excited when a trade is going in my direction then doubling down on that with an exaggerated lot size, thank you for reminding me about managing my discipline.

So glad i watched videos about risk management first before anything else when i started trading. and trust me, it is hard to blow an account if you have a proper risk management. Lots of value in this video :)

    Great video:
I use cTraders' built in lot size calculator but place my trades on MT4 because if has smaller spread than cTrader.
For FTMO 1% is as follow per account size:
1% x 10k = $100. 5 Lost trades will put you over the daily max loss
1% x 25k = $250. 5 Lost trades will put you over the daily max loss
1% x 50k = $500. 5 Lost trades will put you over the daily max loss
1% x 100k = $1000. 5 Lost trades will put you over the daily max loss
My strategy is top down from the monthly and entry on the 4H with at least god probabilities of a 1:3RR,
even with a 30% winning rate I'm still 2% up.
    (-1x7%) + (3x3%) = 2%, but I try to stay with in 40% to 50% win rate.
I don't place more than 2 trades daily.
    Thanks for sharing.

I use to use the app, but it took too long to type in the numbers and calculate when you take live market entries. So instead I find what 1% of my account, divide that number by my SL I wish to this. This will give you the correct position size.
    Account Balance: 100 000
    Risk per trade: 1%
    100 000 * 0.01 = 1 000 risked per trade at 1% risk
    1 000 / 20 pip SL = 5 lots

    Great advice! Just to add.
    My %RPT = 1.5%
*Max Live Risk = 4.5% so 3 open trades max at one time. So that is 4.5% of equity from the first trade made for the day. I keep it fixed for the whole day of trading. This is for day trader style.
*I increase risk to 2-2.5% RPT on A grade setups that have been identified through backtesting to have a higher change of WR% and higher R:R.

This video is excellent and I agree with your approach and your experience. Thanks for explaining that so well about how to adjust the position size not the stop loss and that the position size is not some arbitrary number used always the same for all trades. So many people need to get clear about this.

    • @PlayLifeSmartTravisChristian

Lower Risk usually equals higher Reward but a lower probability ( SL is tighter/countertrend). Higher Risk usually equals Lower Reward but a higher probability (Wider SL/with trend).

I would be too uncomfortable risking 1% per trade. I only risk 0.1% - 0.25% per trade, depending on how much confidence I have in the trade. Swing trade aiming for 3-5 x R per trade on average. Thank you for putting out this video and telling folks how to calculate true risk management. Wish someone had made this video before I started trading lol.

Well said Hannah. Just to mention a couple of things....loss of 1% will not require 100 trades to blow your account since you reduce amount in every trade. For example if you go from 100k to 50k with 60-65 trades then you use again 1% aka 500$ per SL so you still have more than 100 trades at this point.....I haven't calculate this but you have too many trades to blow an account by using risk percentage per trade. That's why we should use this instead of fixed SL. Anyways....I don't know if you already use it but you should look at cTrader for risk calculation you solve everything that you mention in just 1 platform with much more tools and if you are in MT4-MT5 it's like you going from DOS to Windows 10.

I developed a hedging EA. My strategy involves 5-10 % gains and withdrawing these gains. there may be some drawdowns but the risk management makes sure that it remains a small percentage of the account. Rinse and repeat. I have consistent results with these strategy.

alot of people ask what lot size because for most of us we have never had to deal with lots, we simply trade dollar figures however since prop firms etc lend money and then their brokers trade lots, most of us have no idea what lot sizes to trade. trading lots may be common in the UK but aroung the rest of the world it kinda isn't.

    Hey Hannah
Good content. I like it. About risk managment and ftmo here are my thought. Is it not better to calculate your 1% Risk for example and your Position size with the Max of 10% that you can loose because you never cant use the full account.
    Example.
    100.000
    10% max Loss 10.000
Risk managment on the 10K . The reason is if you lost 3 or 5 time is a row you could Hit your max daily Loss or max Loss realy fast. Hope you understand what I mean😎 and keep going with your content.

So you’re saying, we should have a fixed risk rate, but what if we want to enter and our fixed risk rate is 1% but that 1% is too big considering the trade we want to make. Surely we can’t make it 0.5% depending on the trade.

With proper risk management any strategy is profitable. Another important point is your risk to reward ratio and only trade with at least a 1:2. This means you risk $1 to earn at least $2.
