Samuel Beckett Quad

- Just an experiment using pitched percussion. Instead of tapping steady beats, four simple melodic figures enter and leave. I think there is just about room in the script for this to be considered a reasonably authentic approach. And far more authentic than some of the stuff you can can find on YT. And, frankly, far better.
Great Beckett
Watching his plays
You get the feeling
Before you get the meaning
I've lived in a lot of shared houses, and the queue for the communal toilet at around 7am was often like this.
i could watch this all day. it's like it puts me in a trance.
I'm watching it for a drama assignment and it's driving me insane
Friday night with the boys 🤙
Awesome ! I always go back to this . I’ve no idea what’s going on . It’s so good !
They all seem to avoid stepping on the black dot in the middle, what the significance of that is I have no idea.
Perhaps they're missing the point deliberately?

I'm taking a class in combinatorial mathematics and my professor referenced this video in his lectures. Beckett likely uses a specific type of binary sequence known as Gray Code (or reflected binary code), where each successive sequence differs from the previous one by only one bit. This ensures that only one character changes (enters or exits) between each scene. For example, the Gray Code for four bits would generate 16 sequences (from 0000 to 1111), ensuring each possible combination of characters is represented exactly once. Each bit in the sequence corresponds to one of the four characters. A change in a bit (from 0 to 1 or 1 to 0) indicates a character entering or leaving the stage. The stage directions follow the order of these binary sequences, dictating which characters are on stage at any given time.

This is a lot harder than it looks!
lol
Really great concept of musical adaption. Good work. I like.
Saw this live in Philadelphia on September 10, 2001.
That explains a lot.
I love this piece
Andy - I just found it fo you - from arte television - original production directed by Beckett himself - Quad I and II :) Massive Tx for your attempt with the music - love it :D
Samuel Beckett: Quad I+II (play for TV)
I think its really impressive the art of motion, color, music.
Oh. Yeah, I wrote the music. I found the footage and just added it. I couldn't find any film of the entire piece, so it just fades out, but as you can see, the music just sort of arranges itself so it could be used for the whole piece.
Really interesting approach with the pitched percussion. Nice work!
What are the instruments?
Nice one
the music makes this so much better!
me and the homies at a soild hour on a tuesday
Masterpiece.
man the wiggles took a turn for the weird lately
I tried to get the Teletubbies to do it, but their agents were asking way too much. Had to settle for what I could afford on an arts council grant. Fimbles told me to fuck off.
Leaked footage of the early stages of Among Us 2 before it was canceled.
I know. I worked really hard on that script, but they just told me to fuck off.
You will never see God
I love the red one's sound.
‘Then sky alone is left...’
-James Merrill, ‘Lost In Translation’
Love the music!
It would be great as a trap beat!
Superb. I f there was ever a play to illustrate where we are right now, this is it. Great minimalst music as well, Sounds like Glass or Reich. Beckett never misses. Bang.
I think of Harry Partch or Gamelan music.
Me stoned and rambling to myself about who really shot Mr. Burns.
clockwise around the little circle ..... anticlockwise on the edge of the square
They're just turning left
Minimalism at its best. The square and the circle.
Indubitably
This is funny for no reason
You need to give yourself and three performer's and musicians credit. Who are they? Where was performed it. A must do.
Could you say that this is a good visual example of Synaesthesia trans modal in sight, sound and colour?
I guess you could. But I wouldn't know what you meant if you did.
Reminds me of a game of 3 ball pool. But the cue ball keeps scratching ?
i loved it
Your score works - but viewers should try and watch the original. The score/sounds underscore the action in a much more Beckett-ian way I think.
People come and go, that's life.
The song "Mad World," but I think the Gary Jules version, would go perfect with this play if anybody could get permission for that.
Brilliant - great music to go with Beckett. Not easy to get right, but this is.
Does the square at the centre
represent UA-cam ??
It's like a screen saver...or the Pac-Man ghosts if you watch it on double speed.
All it needs is a nice bumping trap beat in the background. Surprised no one has sampled this.
Bumping'd kill this piece in my opinion. Love the melody and bells as they are.
Good one
is this among us?
İnanılmaz
how big does the square have to be ??
*This would make a sick rap beat* 😂🔥
I swear it would
wow
What's this about?
Works beautifully. Is it your own music?
i am here from bible study, orion carloto's bible study
CLARK- UNFULA
the wittgenstein you take is not merely inferior to the semblance of your sympathy
This is a bruh moment
what's going on !!!? 🙁
i really wish i didn't find this as funny as i do
good morning
Was pitched percussion part of the original work?
Not specifically. The original work specifies 4 different percussion instruments, eg claves, woodblock, chimes, each keeping a steady beat. I'd been listening a lot of minimalist stuff, like Steve Reich, Terry Riley etc, so I took my inspiration from that,
teletubbies!!!!!
Beckett had very clear and specific instructions for the performance of his plays, with good reason. If you understood Quad you would not have ruined it in the way you have. You might bear that in mind next time you use someone’s work in a way that distorts it.
In what manner was it distorted
when was this filmed?
1981, Germany
都会を歩いてる時ずっとこんなふうに人を避け続けてるわ

This makes me very angry for some reason
Que estafa de video
Just popping in to say, I don't have that account anymore, but stumbled upon this, having forgotten about it. The video clip is something I found online, but I wrote the four interlocking musical parts. Anyone who wants to is very welcome to use the music if they would like to perform it. I can provide a score for each of the four parts, but seriously, if your musicians need a score for this, then don't give up the day job.
