Hi Tanishq, This would depend on your Lightning Protection System Design and Site Conditions. However, you should ensure that the Air Rod's shadow is not falling on solar modules. Also, if LA is near the mounting structure, you need to make equipotential bonding. Contact us at sales@axis-india.com for a detailed discussion.
Installing a 10 panel home system. I'll just rely on the nearby tv antenna to take the hit. But in the extremely unlucky circumstance of a hit on the panels I'm prepared to take the risk and replacing burnt panels and replace MOSFETs in inverter. It's just not worth worrying about unless weather is crazy in your region. I think industry paranoia is forcing people to go to extremes. How many times have you heard of damage to someone's home because of lightning? It's too rare to worry about. Save your time and money.
Hey David! Thanks for you’re expressing your point of view. The first step in any Lightning Protection is Risk Assessment which gives you the probability of lightning damage based on many factors. There are parts of the world where this risk is very high even for residential structures. And there are some applications where even a small risk of Lightning Strikes is not something the client is willing to live with - this is especially true in industrial applications and data centres that have sensitive electronics. It’s your choice on the risks that you’re willing to live with - it’s our job to educate people on the risks that exist. Hope you have a great day!
While some might argue that lightning protection isn't necessary at all, others believe that taking extra precautions is better than risking potential harm to both property and people. The decision ultimately depends on one's personal preferences and circumstances; however, we always recommend doing thorough research before making any decisions affecting your solar installation's safety features.
How far should the LA be from the mounting structure of the panels to prevent flashovers?
