We just adopted one, and he's very skidish towards us, he backs away when trying to lift him up, and is showing some tendencies of being afraid of humans. Is this normal for them?
I have a 5 year old Bichon/Shih Tzu mix named Stevie. I got her at 3 yrs old. There was a change in her original owners' circumstance and they needed to find her another home. They got her as a puppy, so she went from a loving home to mine, where she is the center of attention & loves it! Stevie is very sweet, and enjoys being petted. She loves to ride in the car. If I can take her with me on an errand, she gets so excited. She loves going to the bank (the drive thru window) with me. It makes her day to go to PetsMart to buy food & visit with all the people & dogs. Her favorite place, though, is a doggie bakery where she can pick out a fresh baked cookie & visit the "resident cookie taster" (the shop owner's Boston Terrier). Stevie enjoys both people and other dogs. I pet sit and Stevie loves to have her friends come over and play in the back yard. She's always so happy to see them, and I can tell which friends are her "favorites". I have a big fenced back yard. The dogs play "chase", then lay in a sunny spot on the deck and take naps. Stevie likes to play "Fetch" with me. I didn't teach her to retrieve- the former owners did. She will bring her toy to me to play "Fetch". She is not a barker. Although, Stevie barks ("talks") and growls a lot when she plays with other dogs. She barks when she hears noises outside, people coming & going, or when someone comes to my door. Her bark is more of a "Hey, mom, there's someone in our yard" bark; not a frenzied or frightened bark. If we are home alone, she never barks. So, though she will bark in some situations, I don't consider her a "barker". If she wants my attention, she will come to me, look at me, and whimper rather than bark. (For instance, if she needs to "go potty".) So far, she is very healthy. She does not have the tear stain problem Bichons can have, and she has no allergies. (I have had a lot of pet sit clients whose Shih Tzus had recurring eye &/or ear infections. I don't know if that is common among Shih Tzus, or if I have just happened to have had an unusually high number of clients whose Shihs deal with eye & ear infections.) Stevie does not like to be left home alone, but she isn't anxious or destructive if left at home alone. I think she just enjoys being with me & going places, rather than staying home. My Shichon does not look like yours. She is white, but smaller. Her face lookes more like a poodles' face; small face & nose. Her body is long (like a Shih). I think she looks like a Poodle with short legs. My groomer tells me she has the hair texture of a Shih Tzu. Her hair is wavy & is curly on her legs, but not the tight curls of a Bichon. Since she has been in only 2 homes and had no bad experiences, she is a sweet, well behaved dog, with no anxiety and not fearful. She is a total joy!

I met one of these fellas for the fist time in the park yesterday. His owner told me what he was and I agree with the video. He was very cute & calm and did not mind me patting his coat, which was very soft. She told me that he was ten years old today, so I said happy birthday! She was very pleased that I showed some interst in him. He looked very bright and fit for somebody who is 70 in dog years! Thanks for the video! 😀

My Shitchon’s name is CookiePuss. Coat is mostly gray with some white, easy to groom. Incredibly sweet temperament. Very cuddly. Very bright, she likes to learn and please. Sociably, I also have two springer doodles, CookiePuss will play with them sometimes but she more or less keeps to herself when not blending in with the pillows on the couch or bed. Excellent dog.
I have a 5 month old shishon named Benny and I will say this video is very accurate to his temperament as well and most characteristics online have held true! He has tons of energy, is very smart and trainable and loves to play and could play for as long as I’d play with him and walk as much as I’d let him. He’s so social with humans and loves other dogs. Couldn’t have asked for a better breed. I will note that I do leave him for a regular 9-5 (sometimes longer) but he was litter box trained and puppy pad trained when I got him and I walk him in the morning and evening during the week and more during weekends, if I have no one to come play with him or let him out mid day. I put a ring camera to watch him throughout the day and he was absolutely fine due to easing him into being occasionally alone at 10 weeks for 30 mins and increasing it by 30 mins to an hour. I had a sitter for him until he was 3 and a half months old when at work but when I moved he had to be alone and was fine as he had been trained to use the bathroom and was ok also being alone. I also do not leave him in the crate but shut all doors so he has access to only living room and kitchen. I leave the TV on since he is so social and he watches it! He will usually take short naps and play with himself and explore but does not destroy furniture or eat cords but I know that’s a concern for some owners. Something that helped is I would make puzzle treats when I would leave and this would keep him occupied as well as self moving toys. He did whine the first few days and I’d come home on my lunch but leaving again made it worse so now he’s a trooper and keeps himself busy and doesn’t care when I leave 😂 I know I had so much guilt but coming home and making sure he eats has a good walk and plenty of play time and cuddles is our routine and he was fine. Don’t let that hold you back from this amazing breed! This little guy in the video is adorable and looks like my Benny but with reversed coloring! He’s apricot and has white accents. We have 2, a boy and a girl. The boy is 20lbs and sincerely is a brother from a way different mother. He's 2 yrs, still poops in the house randomly, has horrible greetings (barking and biting) and eats everything, I mean everything! But we love him and he plays fetch rather well. Our 1 yr old girl on the other hand is 11lbs and a baby angel. Is very sweet, pleasant to others and is the definition of this breed's moniker.... The Teddy Bear. They love each other too and it's super cute! ♥️

❤ours is 1 years old, we got him at 12 weeks age and he was mostly potty trained within a week. Once we got a Bell for him to ring he has had very few accidents ( the bell instructions had all these steps to implement over 5-7 days….fortunately these dogs are very smart and he was able to master the bell after showing it to him 1 time.❤

My shishon is 18 months old. Her name is Nina. We’ve had her since she was 8 weeks old. She’s great with my young grandchildren, and very loving and sweet. She loves riding in the car and traveling. She was a little difficult to potty train ( took about 6 months) she is a very fussy eater, and needs frequent grooming or else gets mats in her hair but otherwise loves to play. I am her person and she brings so much joy to my life.
I had a hard time house training mine. It took about 2 months of consistently taking him out after he ate or drank, after playtime and whenever he would start sniffing around. Now, he's completely house broken and will always let me know when he needs to go out. Keep at it and he will get it.

Funniest thing....my name is Christine Marie and I own a shichon named Pip. I had a Bichon for 18 years and he was the most wonderful dog. When he passed I got my Shichon who looks just like yours. He's white and cream, 15 lbs. He loves our family and is so cute and funny but he's not really a snuggler or good around strangers which I am disappointed about. He's only 1 so I'm hoping he gets more cuddly as he ages. He also barks at EVERYTHING. He is very protective of my children and I can't have anyone other than family over because he barks and growls so badly that I am afraid he will bite. He was on Purina One when I got him at 8 weeks old but he will rarely eat it anymore. He literally has to be starving to eat it! He also loves to play fetch all day long. He is a great dog but definitely not the same as my purebred Bichon Frise. Thank you for this video. It was helpful to see how another Shichon is.

I do work remotely but he hates when my husband and I leave even for short periods. My Thor has sooooo many toys as well. Loves to play catch also. I get Thor groomed every 4 weeks. His coat is difficult to manage and he’s prone to mats so he goes often. What do you feed him? My Thor is 18 lbs! He’s big also and needs to probably up his exercise and change his diet. My dog doesn't overeat...so I just always keep his bowl full of food and then he eats whenever he is hungry 😃 I've seen dogs scarf down food when their owners only feed them certain times of the day...Dude always knows there is food for him so he can eat peacefully and not be rushed!

@@christinabmarie From oldest to youngest, she lives with: Walter (17 YO Poodle-Dachshund mix), Claire (15 YO Chihuahua mix), Duffy (13 YO Shih Tzu-Poodle mix), Taco (13 YO mix of a lot of things, and Jinx (1 YO Shih Tzu-Chihuahua mix). Skitch and Jinx are the only puppies I have ever had, everyone else but Duffy is a shelter find. Duffy came to live with us when my neighbor had to go into an assisted care facility when his dementia became too bad. I think Ron (my neighbor) told me the nicest thing I have ever heard in my 60-some years on this planet: I would take Duffy to visit him regularly and at the end Ron told me that "I'm worried about what is going to happen to me, but at least I know my dog will be in a good home." I still tear up thinking of that. Thank you for listening to an old fool!

Our Shichon has small dog syndrome. He is a rescue. The previous owners said something about having to leave him alone alot and I believe that is why he tries to control people and his environment. He is so cute that his previous owners with a young girl, handled him too much and one day he decided to tell them enough is enough in his own way......and now he's ours. He's quirky and we don't handle him alot. Shitzos were bred to be in house guardian dogs and ours guards his bonded owner. We love his barking, though, and it's a great way for him to express himself. Please don't leave this little breed alone for long.
Oh dear. Yeah, Shichons are sociable dogs and need to be around people (and other dogs). I'm so glad that you have him now! I'm sure he is so, so much happier being with you. My zuchon is a huge barker however she’s been trained. They are incredible guard dogs.

Lol thanks for sharing! Your dog looks just like my Thor! I swear you have my dog in your lap! He has the same temperament! I feel so bad when I leave him too. I do work remotely but he hates when my husband and I leave even for short periods. My Thor has sooooo many toys as well. Loves to play catch also. I get Thor groomed every 4 weeks. His coat is difficult to manage and he’s prone to mats so he goes often. What do you feed him? My Thor is 18 lbs! He’s big also and needs to probably up his exercise and change his diet. Yeah Dude doesn't like being alone. Thankfully I found a neighbor to pick him up and hang out with him on days when I'll be late at the office, and a dog walker the other day.

So I have a female bichon Shizuoka about year and a half and was wondering how much food you give an adult dog and if it’s two or three times a day of food and Ty for your help
My dog doesn't overeat...so I just always keep his bowl full of food and then he eats whenever he is hungry 😃
I've seen dogs scarf down food when their owners only feed them certain times of the day...Dude always knows there is food for him so he can eat peacefully and not be rushed!

Our Shichon is named Skitch and was born in May 2023. She lives with 5 other dogs and is as rough & tumble as they come!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that name!!! That's good that she is rough and tumble!! When I take mine to the dog park he often stays in the corner and just smells the grass 😂🤣

@@christinabmarie From oldest to youngest, she lives with: Walter (17 YO Poodle-Dachshund mix), Claire (15 YO Chihuahua mix), Duffy (13 YO Shih Tzu-Poodle mix), Taco (13 YO mix of a lot of things, and Jinx (1 YO Shih Tzu-Chihuahua mix). Skitch and Jinx are the only puppies I have ever had, everyone else but Duffy is a shelter find. Duffy came to live with us when my neighbor had to go into an assisted care facility when his dementia became too bad. I think Ron (my neighbor) told me the nicest thing I have ever heard in my 60-some years on this planet: I would take Duffy to visit him regularly and at the end Ron told me that "I'm worried about what is going to happen to me, but at least I know my dog will be in a good home." I still tear up thinking of that. Thank you for listening to an old fool!

Does shed? I am about to adopt a 9 week old but only thing stopping me now after watching your video is that they are not happy being at home alone. I work 9 hours a day but work 10mins down the street from my home. Not sure if I should adopt now.
Doesn’t shed. My Shichon is good at home alone just fine. I come home for lunch most days if not she stays home at 8 hours alone, no barking.

Unfortunately I turned down the puppy that my coworker's sister had due to my mother telling me that I need to go find a husband instead since a dog can't bring me water if I am sick in bed. Plus I didn't want to make the puppy feeling abandoned if it does not do well alone. 😔

Our Shichon has small dog syndrome. He is a rescue. The previous owners said something about having to leave him alone alot and I believe that is why he tries to control people and his environment. He is so cute that his previous owners with a young girl, handled him too much and one day he decided to tell them enough is enough in his own way......and now he's ours. He's quirky and we don't handle him alot. Shitzos were bred to be in house guardian dogs and ours guards his bonded owner. We love his barking, though, and it's a great way for him to express himself. Please don't leave this little breed alone for long.
Oh dear. Yeah, Shichons are sociable dogs and need to be around people (and other dogs). I'm so glad that you have him now! I'm sure he is so, so much happier being with you. And a quirky dog is a fun one!!
Have you seen the cute signs that say "Warning: Bichon Guard Dog" from Amazon? It's not QUITE the same as a Shichon, but it might be a fun sign for you to put up since you have a little guard dog! 😀
