THE MOST COMPLETE VIDEO REASSEMBLY TO DATE OF THE TRAGIC ACCIDENT OF ROGER WILLIAMSON
    David Purley
    ----------------------------------------------------
    Fonti usate per la ricostruzione:
    MotorTv +Tv olandese(NOS)+ORTF+Natural sound version.
    ----------------------------------------------------

Such a shame Roger died unnecessarily, David Purley, what a man he was, should have been given a knighthood for his brave act to save his friend.

I wish I had met David Purley, I always remember the interview he did with Murray Walker at 79 British GP, just making jokes about the horrendous crash he had at Silverstone, RIP forever David and Roger also.

David Purley was awarded the George Medal (one of the highest awards for civilian bravery in the UK honours system). The terrible accident was broadcast live on UK tv and had a big impact on how people saw grand prix racing and safety.

This is one of the main reasons that f1 is safer now. The amount of backlash due to this was too much not to do anything. The marshals were completely useless due to them wearing hi-vis jackets and that's it. Purley was the only one able to go near the flame. Another thing that annoys me is how the marshals were in no rush to do anything. They acted like he was out of the car and they were waiting for the fire engine to arrive when they atleast could have helped flag down a few more drivers and get the race stopped, yet they still stood and watched a tragedy happen in front of their eyes

I know there’s a few people in the comments saying more should have been done by people in the vicinity, but try standing next to a raging petrol inferno at all, let alone putting your bare hands on a car that by that point would be several hundred degrees Celsius. No spectator could have done that and the marshals were insufficiently equipped, Purley said one was wearing a plastic mac which would have melted onto him had he got too close.

    • @Sacha-br4gh
      @Sacha-br4gh  2 роки тому

Purley also said that spectators wanted to help but that the stewards (even with dogs) prevented them from doing it ...

@@Sacha-br4gh I know they were vilified for that but they might have prevented further loss of life by doing so. Having more people running across the track when visibility was already minimal doesn’t bear thinking about (it already looks like chaos in the TV footage), and even if they reached the fire they would have been beaten back by the heat, unless by some miracle they came to watch the race dressed in fireproof clothing (!)

@@seaninterpop After a few minutes the flames were very high and the unbearable heat is true but ... at the beginning the fire was little and something more all the commissioners can do together with Purley. The will to do it was really lacking in those very first moments, I see it more as a mixture of fear (and it's human eh) and cowardice together. r.i.p Roger

Or flame retardant clothing on the Marshalls.
Only the legendary David Purley wore a suit allowing him to get close to Roger’s car…

There are things that must be kept in mind prior to judging those who apparently were doing nothing to save Roger Williamson's life.
First of all, David Purley was the only one wearing a fire resisting suit. Without a proper protection, approaching fire is impossibile, as the heat is unbearable.
Spectators could do nothing at all. They all were beyond a net and guards in uniform were blindly abiding by the order to keep spectators far from the track, even threatening them with their shepherd dogs.
The accident came about at the seventh lap, when fuel tanks were containing almost 200 litres of petrol (gasoline).
The fire was nourished by at least one of the two tanks, meaning that 90 litres of petrol were violently burning inside the capsized car.
The organisation of the race was so inadequate, that even radio-communication had failed and the board was ignoring what was happening.
Nobody gave the order to stop the race, so crossing the track was dangerous and could be done just with a lot of care.
The fire-truck got there after six minutes of delay and firemen in asbestos suit needed minutes to extinguish the fire.
    That's the whole story.

While Roger's burning car is at the middle of the picture, there are people (a family perhaps) at the top of the picture. And they didn't move their finger, like nothing was happening some 50m from them. At least the spectators, in the left side of the shooting, tried to jump over the fence to help, yet the police and their dogs restrained them from doing so.

Enquanto o carro ardia a corrida prosseguiu. Nesses tempos era "Show must go on".

That was the time when racing was much more dangerous than today, he collided with the armco headon, barrelroll the car on its roof and start to burn, purley tried to help him and the coward firemen 100 m away with an full armed firetruck would be there in seconds, but the feard to collide vs the racing cars, its a shame that purley tried to help and get no help from some marshalls or firemen, some racedriver said: for more than 20 rounds i had an taste of burning flesh in my nose, its horrible and disgusting that racing went that way.
