Seems we are seeing the thermal limits of Apple's MPX Modules. It's essentially a passive heatsink that relies on case fans to push air through the "tunnel" and that is not as effective as the 3-fan GPU heatsink designs. Apple's only fix for this will be... just as always... lower the frequency, which will lower the heat generated, but also lower the performance. I agree with @Morgonaut, I would not want to see my new $5,000+ GPU "cook itself" to a premature death.

Hard to justify Apple MPX prices. Just installed 2 Amd Reference RX6900xt for 2600 USD. Sold my 2 used Radeon VII for 1800 USD, happy mining :-) 180K GB5 each and runs like a charm in Resolve.
as I prove in this video - Geekbench score tells absolutely nothing. Look at macrumors forum how bad performance the RX 6900 XT has in real life scenarios
I just dumped my two Radeon VII's as well. I hadn't been paying attention to graphics cards so I was absolutely shocked at the prices. Now I have to figure out my replacement. I have the W6800x Duo on order because I was tired of the relative unreliability of the Radeon VII's and no sleep function, but now I have to reassess.
Thanks for the comprehensive review. Is there a possibility that you test on Resolve. 17.3 it's supposed to use the tile memory present on the M1 and in the new cards. The old cards have faster external memory. Maybe in the website?
I work on video on M1 Resolve versions comparison. And of course I will test the Duo card on 17.3 too. But don't expect any gains on it since resolve 17.3 brought benefits to M1, not to 2019 Mac Pro!
@@morgonaut lol. Well for my purposes (I use mine to make Deepfake videos) I need a huge amount of video memory. If I was going to spend the $5,000 you did though I'd have gotten an RTX A6000 48GB card anyway (again, for Deepfakes). I don't think there's a Deepfacelab version that works with Mac yet.
Apple, just force AMD to release their 120CU graphics card to consumers already, no need to have a fancy dual compute unit card. Heck, you could go with dual 120CU with lower clocks for even more performance and higher efficiency
I'd be interested to see how the 3090 compares, i know it wouldnt be easy to compare them, because its a dual 6800 VS single 3090, and they'd be on two different operating systems that have different overheads in different computing tasks. but it would be a cool comparison. But it might give us ingsignt into AMD's rumored next generation where most cards will be dual die, but act as single die to the computer
I also have the exact same overheating issue on GPU proximity 6. On idle! Clearly faulty design somewhere. Adding this to all the mislabeling crap, Apple really messed up
thanks for info. Seems there is really lot of people with this issue! Very sad story :( So share my video so it can help to more people avoid this pain and money loss
Great video! So another W6800x being returned to Apple due to disappointing performance… what is going on??? Having just tested and returned a W6800x duo, I’m sticking with my Vega IIs, they perform excellent, fast and stable in my fcpx multicam workflow (however, the CPU based transcoding of my 10bit HEVC material takes some time, so now I am thinking of throwing a stack of Mac Minis into the game for that specific task or await the next gen mb-pro).
Crap. I just bought and installed this card. I haven't put it through its paces yet. I'm was excited to watch your video, and you did an excellent job. But now I'm depressed! :( I haven't had any fan noise yet, but I haven't pushed it yet either. Do you think some of these issues could be updated in firmware/software updates? Is it too new? Are you a beta tester or have you tested it in Monterey yet? I've still got 20 days or so to return it...we shall see...

what applications use the available power of two graphics cards connected by an infinite fabric link? I don't play games, but I'm interested in apps like blender. adobe substance painter, unreal engine 5, adobe aftereffect
@@morgonaut yes, I watched the video carefully again and saw the graphs of the work of two video cores. Thank you. most shocked that even a substance painter uses two video cores! I wonder how the memory is distributed, is 32 GB + 32 GB summed up?
it's not using just "two video cores" as you said, it's using TWO VIDEO CARDS with thousands of cores. The infinity fabric link will allow applications to address whole 64GB video frame buffer
do what you want, it's just VERY sad you did not bother to watch my other video about it which could open your eyes, but that's your problem. Are you aware I did not produce in my lifetime only single video, this video right?
I think you have a faulty card. I tested my W6800X and the temperatures in idle are 30-35°C. In Geekbench the temperature rises only some Kelvin. OK, it's not the Duo. But I doubt that a second GPU in idle would make much difference with correct mounted cooler.
@@morgonaut But a second chip in idle can't add so much heat that the card overheats even with loud fans. If one chip under load doesn't produce enough heat to rise the temp by more than 5 Kelvin (without any increase in fan speed), than two chips are just not able to overheat in idle with correct mounted cooler.
@@morgonaut I understand. And I tell you that this can't be the normal behavior. This must be a failure, most probably not correct attached heatsink. It is technically impossible to overheat in idle. And I doubt that it would be possible under load. If the one core of my W6800X in idle produces enough heat to bring the temperature 10K above ambient temperature, than a second core in idle can't add additional 65K. Especially not if the fan speed ramp up too.
@Thomas K - another person commented he/she has same overheating issue - that's not failure of single piece. And as shown in my video core temperatures are OK
"I will not give you $5000 to see card which is hotter than MY OVEN"...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💦💦💦💦💦💦 I lost it after you said that!!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭🤧☠💀 I wonder how you will review or even purchase the 2023 Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra Chip and ALL that empty space???
@@morgonaut My comment is about what you said in the video. It's a repeat of what you said at the end in your conclusion of spending $5000 on 6800 duo card. In essence I'm saying it was HILARIOUS and also a proven fact thru your testing in relation to THE COST vs. Performance. Then you received the replacement card and it wasn't any better!!!
@HikikomoriDev - why? I guess the M2 Ultra is better and can even address more video memory. Wasting money on this GPU which costs almost the same as whole Mac Pro makes no sense to me 😇
Because one wants to keep the investment.... The hardware itself was extremely expensive and you want to put it to use for years more. If money doesn't mean anything to you, it's fine, but for like 99% of us it surely does, especially now where the entire world economy shrank back a bunch in these past years.@@morgonaut
@HikikomoriDev - look, I sold almost all components I added to my 2019 Mac Pro to get some lost value back. And the barebones Mac I keep but not as main workstation anymore. I bought the M2 Ultra as main one. The Mac Pro can now still be useful for specific tasks but resale value is so low it makes more sense to keep it and sell the components as I mentioned. = makes no sense to invest into it anymore anything.

no because pro apps I tested as shown in this video do fully utilize this card without any problem. Problem is the temperature
Thanks! i sure hope the new card behaves better! iwas planning to buy
well I'm afraid the performance will be the same . I will let you know in new video
Hard to justify Apple MPX prices.
Just installed 2 Amd Reference RX6900xt for 2600 USD.
Sold my 2 used Radeon VII for 1800 USD, happy mining :-)
180K GB5 each and runs like a charm in Resolve.
as I prove in this video - Geekbench score tells absolutely nothing.
:)) good luck on deciding :)
Maybe we can use this card to bake some cookie? hahaha ! it's joke, hum ? you say I'm not joking ? I'm joking seriously.
you will buy $5000 "cookie machine"? ok... :)
@@morgonaut Thanks.
I wish they'd make a Windows-based version of this card. I have the standard W6800 Pro 32GB card in my workstation.
I'm glad this is Mac exclusive :) Windows crap is not allowed in our company
@@morgonaut lol. Well for my purposes (I use mine to make Deepfake videos) I need a huge amount of video memory. If I was going to spend the $5,000 you did though I'd have gotten an RTX A6000 48GB card anyway (again, for Deepfakes). I don't think there's a Deepfacelab version that works with Mac yet.
You are crazy. Crazy good.
hihi :) thanks for you nicely crazy comment :)
What storage device where you using to store the raw media and location for the transcodes?
Specifically for the R3d footage.
4x PCIe 4 2TB NVME in "RAID0" 8TB array
Apple, just force AMD to release their 120CU graphics card to consumers already, no need to have a fancy dual compute unit card. Heck, you could go with dual 120CU with lower clocks for even more performance and higher efficiency
I'd be interested to see how the 3090 compares, i know it wouldnt be easy to compare them, because its a dual 6800 VS single 3090, and they'd be on two different operating systems that have different overheads in different computing tasks. but it would be a cool comparison. But it might give us ingsignt into AMD's rumored next generation where most cards will be dual die, but act as single die to the computer
as you said it's not possible to compare those when 3090 can't run macOS
I also have the exact same overheating issue on GPU proximity 6. On idle! Clearly faulty design somewhere. Adding this to all the mislabeling crap, Apple really messed up
thanks for info. Seems there is really lot of people with this issue! Very sad story :( So share my video so it can help to more people avoid this pain and money loss
@@morgonaut are you going to get the W6900X instead? Or back to Pro Vega II Duo?
as I said in this video first I need to test the replacement unit
@@morgonaut yeah hopefully this is just a first batch issue
I don't believe that. Apple is known to have "no problems" with temperatures
what about ur 6800duo now? i saw another video from YT, and he did not have any issue in overheat
because he did not run the monitoring app I did run!
Great video! So another W6800x being returned to Apple due to disappointing performance… what is going on???
Having just tested and returned a W6800x duo, I’m sticking with my Vega IIs, they perform excellent, fast and stable in my fcpx multicam workflow (however, the CPU based transcoding of my 10bit HEVC material takes some time, so now I am thinking of throwing a stack of Mac Minis into the game for that specific task or await the next gen mb-pro).
and what was the exact reason why you returned your W6800X DUO card?
@@morgonaut don't they need time to optimize
they did have lot of time already
@@morgonaut for individual app developers not just Apple
issue I addressed in this video has nothing to do with "individual app developers"
I've still got 20 days or so to return it...we shall see...
yes I'm in Developer Programm but I will not install that Beta on my main production 2019 Mac Pro machine
but I would like to hear your experience with this card, so test it and report - it can help to more poeple
Well I have a vegaII duo+ a 6900xt and can do RED 8K export at 30 fps. seems this is a better option.
6900xt is not good option :)
By the way there's a option of choosing GPU to decode Redcode, choosing it can reduce CPU's work by about 80%, try that!
what are you talking about??? it's set to use gpu for decoding that
@@morgonaut Then it is strange that I can do it well with a vega duo and a 6900xt, in theory they should be not a very big difference
@@morgonaut Oh Maybe it's the CPU when exporting 422HQ, I got a 24c version
I have controlled environment, I cannot judge yours
I said clearly in my video where it's CPU limited
hey Teresa how are you? can i use proxmox environment using on a single computer ( i7 10th Gen , 32 gb ram, 2 graphic cards and 1 monitor samsung G9 "49 ) and using macOS an linux at the same time ? or i need the second computer to acess?a
@Hugo Mendonca - on my 2nd youtube channel I showed 3 systems at the same time, so for sure you can use only 2 - watch my videos on 2nd channel if you are interested in this
I am cancelling my order of the single W6800X... after cancelling the Vega II order.! Now I'm not sure what to get while working in C4D, but I have to get rid of the 580X. F*&k! And I can't wait any longer. I just installed the 16 core cpu and everything is thumbs up. But thank you so much for your review Teri.
Christopher, on your place I would get the Vega II Duo or at least single one. It's great card. As you can see I have the comparison and I know what I'm talking about
@@morgonaut Thanks Teri, I appreciate that! Just cancelled and reordered the Vega II single.. wish I had deep pockets ;-) lol... Someday!?!
even single Vega II is great choice. I'm just thinking of getting the 2 year old Vega II DUO instead of the W6800X DUO
I have the 16 core with the single Vega II and it is great. It’s hard to go wrong with a single Vega II card.
@@RockyColaFizz Teri calmed my fears about it, and I thank you for reinforcement🙏... it's coming between the 25th - 27th and it cant get here quick enough!🥴✊🏾🎬
no surprise. vega may be a bad architecture for gaming, it was very good one for gpgpu, in my case, video production. especially its teammate, HBM2 with massive bandwidth, was another weapon for opencl performance. my supervisor used 2 radeon viis for davinci resolve to ensure max performance and he did not changed his graphics yet.
I liked my Radeon VIIs a lot, but the Vega Pro II are better thanks to double the memory
@@morgonaut yes but we are using hackintosh so dual vega was out of our sight. and that's why we are considering to follow your build, named "new way". but one question. does macos support 88 threads if we use your type 1 hypervisor build? we have a dual xeon e5 2699v4 qs based machine for testbed.
@CircuitBoard - if you are using Hackintosh why you comment on my MACINTOSH only related youtube channel and not on my HACKINTOSH only related youtube chanel?
BTW videos about virtualization I plan on this channel
@@morgonaut I just noticed you have 2 separate channels lol! OK, if you want to talk about that only in that channel, wilco. anyway nice video. cheers!
I'm just curious, can you plug this card to a PC, assuming a single card and not the duo one
of course you can't use it in PC when only 2019 Mac Pro has those MPX slots :) This is 2019 Mac Pro only card
How are you doing with the single W6800X, anything yet?
I don't have single one
Hey hey, did the replacement arrive? Same Problems? I Would buy a new MacPro and look for the best GPU for my usage. Basicly i would use this Mac for editing 8K 360 3D footage.
"did the replacement arrive? " - why don't you just watch my video about the new unit? :(
Damned. When I heard about the new card, I wanted to buy it. After your review (overheating problem) I don't want the card anymore. I will keep waiting ...
the replacement card should be here in day or two, so more info I will know after I deep test also the new one so you better wait for my update video
Hi, My system has 28 core but with 5700X and 6900XT egpu as card is not fit in system. I like to upgrade and would like to ask your advise. Should I go just another 5700X or 6800X duo or 2 x 6900XT inside Mac. Thanks in advance!
@MK Zayar - without further info from your side it's impossible to answer. In this video I showed for what is this card good and for the Vega II are better.
@@morgonaut Thanks so much for your quick reply. I m just a learner and trying to use AF, Resolve and 3D works. I watch too many time of your video like more than 30 times. But still not sure what should I get. Really upset can’t decide it yet and afraid of choosing wrong one . Installed 96Gb of Apple ram and don’t have enough money to upgrade yet. @@morgonaut sound great. Will try. Thanks
I also noticed how little RAM you are using. out of 192 GB, a maximum of 32 GB. how so? I have 64 GB so far and I just turn on the MAC and I have 24 GB occupied. but when I start to work - all available memory is exhausted. i want 192gb too but gosh why are you using so little memory? I have 3 monitors connected, but in theory this should not matter, there is video memory for this
thats disappointing about overheating on idle, my mac mini overheats on idle, its annoying
yeah, welcome to Apple land :)
radeon pro w5700
what applications use the available power of two graphics cards connected by an infinite fabric link? I don't play games, but I'm interested in apps like blender. adobe substance painter, unreal engine 5, adobe aftereffect
for example video editing apps, 3D apps for rendering and simulations etc...
@@morgonaut then I definitely have to buy it)) I’m just thinking of buying a single or a duo
do what you want, it's just VERY sad you did not bother to watch my other video about it which could open your eyes, but that's your problem.
I have W6800X DUO, not a single W6800X! When I had 2 years ago the Vega Pro II DUO it was also overheating, but not so much
@@morgonaut But a second chip in idle can't add so much heat that the card overheats even with loud fans. If one chip under load doesn't produce enough heat to rise the temp by more than 5 Kelvin (without any increase in fan speed), than two chips are just not able to overheat in idle with correct mounted cooler.
you don't understand how Apple DUO cards works. If you would watch my video at all you would know it overheats even in idle!
And as shown in my video core temperatures are OK
nice its HDR,..........hmm
all my videos on both my youtube channels in the last 2 years are in HDR
I bought 6900 xt, I am writing from Turkey. I can't find the cable. :(((((
what cable??
Thank you from your fans in China! This thing should be a Chinese copycat! Hahahahaha
thanks for your nice comment. Greetings to China!
"I will not give you $5000 to see card which is hotter than MY OVEN"...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💦💦💦💦💦💦 I lost it after you said that!!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭🤧☠💀 I wonder how you will review or even purchase the 2023 Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra Chip and ALL that empty space???
who is your comment addressed to? Makes no sense to me
@@morgonaut My comment is about what you said in the video. It's a repeat of what you said at the end in your conclusion of spending $5000 on 6800 duo card. In essence I'm saying it was HILARIOUS and also a proven fact thru your testing in relation to THE COST vs. Performance. Then you received the replacement card and it wasn't any better!!!
oh yeah, spending so much money on this card is very bad idea :)
Too bad it doesn't work in the M2 version of the Mac Pro :(
@HikikomoriDev - why?
= makes no sense to invest into it anymore anything.

sure it can run MacOS without any problem. I built already several Threadripper Pro 3975X monsters around Globe with macOS
With the Redshift benchmark, I got 1 min 46 seconds - but with two W6800x Duo modules. Anyway it's the fastest Mac time, but on PC will be faster for sure
yeah, so it's scaling pretty much linear with two dual ones
wow now i can play fortnite at 30fps tysm
Sounds like driver issues.
if that would be "driver issue" so how would you explain some people have this overheating and some not?
