In this video I share my workflow on how to color grade with the Phantom LUTs to maximize on the dynamic range coming from cameras like the Sony A7sIII, The FX3 and the A7IV. What I mean by more dynamic range is that a lot of users simply apply the LUT and then do a few tweaks to white balance and contrast. In some cases this is actually enough but more often than not you will find that just applying the LUT at 100% will give you blown out highlights you’re unable to bring back by simply dropping a slider. To me this is such a waste because you can always squeeze out more performance from your camera if you’re willing to take that extra step. What I’m going to teach you is how to maximise on dynamic range with a simple tool included in all video editors from Davinci Resolve, to Premiere Pro & Final Cut. If you’re still wondering how to expose for Phantom LUTs with Slog3, I made a dedicated video about it you can watch here • How to EXPOSE SLOG3 Co...

I would buy it with your code just for this video...even i am very good with Leeming lut...just to say thank U for your effort
@@theautomationchannel6920 how was the lut?
@@rajhossen4226 It is ok...nothing fancey .. almost near the standard conversion lut .. I don't have these very very sharp eyes to tell there is huge difference..my be less contrast..and that's it...
@@rajhossen4226 they're fantastic and used by countless professionals. Highly recommend.
So cant use it with Sony alpha S7 II???
Awesome.
Thanks dude!!!
Thanks for tutorial. What about WDR PRE-LUT? You use it in order to just convert camera color space to the arri alexa color space without touching gamma? I mean if you want to apply some luts for arri alexa not from phantom luts pack you use this WDR PRE-LUT?
You are oficially my favorite youtuber for a few months now. Can't wait till you get 1M subs and counting.
Jeepers that's a huge compliment! Thank you Pauls, I really appreciate the encouragement!
Cannot thank you enough for this and your exposing S-log 3 video. I recently got an FX3 for work and am in love with it, but shooting in S-log 3 is new to me. With your other video and these LUTs I just bought, I'm excited to see how much better my videos will be.
That's wonderful news, so glad you find them helpful! Enjoy the FX3, it's a beast!
This footage is a great example of getting it right straight out of the camera. NO MATTER what lut you apply to this footage it will look astonishing. That is a common mistake a beginner will make. Deep Color grading can enhance an image for sure, however, good lighting and composition will result in a better image. Great tutorial!!!! Love the look you captured.
Thanks Cody, totally agree with you! Grateful for your feedback!
Thank you for this
You're welcome bro!
Thank you very much Sir
Only a pleasure Jay!
Jacques even a year on for someone who is still learning their craft with a Sony A7S III, you have been so helpful. Thank you so much!
Tq so much sir, already subscribe 😊👍
You're welcome sir, thanks for your support!
Another fantastic tutorial. Thank you!
So glad to hear that, thanks Stu!
This is the clearest and easiest to follow video on this topic I have seen! Just bought the Phantom LUTs with your code and subscribed!
Thank you Gerald, that means so much to me! I hope you can learn a lot more from me!
Love itttt 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Thanks Melvin!
какой был баланс белого в первом шоте, и какая экспозиция ?
Perfect as this week I've been diving into Slog 3!! Great explainer mate
Yeeeew so glad to hear, thanks Bryan! Hope you figure it out quickly, it's so much fun!
This is great stuff! Thanks so much!
Yeeew stoked! Thanks Tucker!
Love every single one of your videos!!!!😍
Thanks Wez, really appreciate your support!
Love your channel bro…
Thanks bro, so appreciate you taking the time to write this!
Hello, great, Sorry, I'm a beginner, I don't speak English, I will use a translator, I would like to know in DaVinci resolve how we would use these Luts, if there would be a need to use a CST to convert to Rec 709 or if those Luts are used directly on slog 3 in the case from Sony?, thank you!!! 👍👍👍
Hi there, no need to use a CST, you just select it in your node and you're good to go. Just make sure you use it on Slog3 footage :)
@@jacques_crafford Great, thank you very much!!!
Thank u sir. I have a7c. Your trIcks also work for sony A7c
🙏
Namaste from 🇮🇳India
Only a pleasure bro! Yes this trick will work with your A7c but I advise to stick to 4K and you have to get your White Balance and Exposure Correct in-camera because the 8 Bit Codec won't give you the same amount of room for grading.
I've figured out how to get the same result, but without having to qualify anything.
Great tips! I also realized recently that Joel includes a WDR Pre-LUT in the packages that he sends out. If you apply this LUT before your main conversion LUT, you'll notice a great increase in your dynamic range as well. Worth giving a shot! Changed my workflow for the better.
Thanks Timmy, always appreciate your feedback! I actually haven't tried the WDR Pre-LUT yet but I hope that this method will teach people what is possible without assistance giving them more control over future grades even when they're not using the Phantom LUTS.
@@jacques_crafford I agree! What you've shown here is a more universal way of adjusting exposure selectively on any image.
I think one of the best turorial out there for FX3 and A7sii.
Great job
Thank you sooo much!
Such an inspiration! I admire you and your work
Thanks Stephanie, that means so much to me!
Thanks you for your content keep going
You're welcome friend! Thanks for your support!
Super maestro
Thanks mate, glad you liked it!
Great tutorial
Thanks so much!
This is very helpful, I have yet to used phantom luts yet on a project but was considering for an upcoming video I have planned
Awesome so glad to hear! Be sure to try out the WDR Pre-LUT and let me know what you think!
Great informative video! Thanks for sharing, Jacques!
You're welcome bro, thanks for your amazing support!

WOEHOE! A new video from Jacques! That's a real innovative approach to the qualifier for me. Thank you so much!
Thank you Saffloer, so grateful for your feedback. The Qualifier is my favourite tool for sure :)
Wow, what an incredible talent and eye you have. Thank you for sharing your skills with us to unlock the best possible images. A million thanks! 🙏
Thank you so much for your kind words! It is only a pleasure!
Hi Jaques! Thank you so much for this video. When you use Phantom Luts in DaVinci, what color space management settings are you using? The LUTS change considerably depending on this, and I haven't quite figured out what's "right" yet, and can't find any documentation on it. Thank you so much!
hey, did you manage to figure this out at all? im struggling with the same thing.

🤩 Bru!!! I cannot express how much I learnt about colour grading from you video. You are awesome my man. First video I watched, already subscribed.
DUDE! Thanks man, that means so much to me! Dropping another grading tutorial tomorrow :)
@@jacques_crafford looking forward to it man. 🙂
Do these work for zv-e1?
For selecting the "extremes" the HDR-tab might come in handy in Davinci Resolve
Thanks bro I haven't tried that yet!
Finally there are professional color grading tutorials on UA-cam! I have pretty much same workflow, except debatable point for NR ;) Though, I like the trick for skin smoothing. Definitely will try to use it. :) Thank you!
Thanks bro that's so good to hear. I've done comparisons with the NR in the beginning and after and I didn't see a difference but maybe I'm missing something.
@@jacques_crafford if you do it at the beginning, your keys will be cleaner, because there is less noise in the image you want to key. Also what I noticed: you can just turn of Hue and Saturation in your key if you want to use luminance only. I would also encourage you to look up Cullen Kelly and Darren Mostyn. Massive knowledge right from the industry there!
I'm glad that i found your channel🤗
Beautiful work my brotha 💯👌🏼
Thanks brother, comments like these really make it worth it!
Hi Jaques, thank you so much for your detailed tutorials. I really enjoy your way in doing this and have already learned quite a bit. What I am wondering though is: How would you lower the details in Premiere Pro to create those nice, flattering, soft edges? Thanks for your help
Youre on fire bro! love it. My workflow is very similar. I use the color compressor on the skin pull also, gets rid of inconsistant skin. Easy to over do it though haha love your work mate
Yeeew thanks TJ! Oh man, I overdo it all the time haha, it's definitely something to look out for :)
Really enjoy you videos, thanks for sharing such in depth content. You can just feel that you are a working professional and not just sharing theoretical tips. (Nothing wrong with that though)
Thanks Julius, that is most encouraging!
Yep. I couldn’t have said it better myself 🙂
For sharpening you would use one last node?
I would like to ask about any specific color management in davinci resolve setting? Like color sciene, timeline color space and output color space setting or just leave it default?
Hi Jacq! Love the colors! Do you by any chance have a custom picture profile for this lut?
Thank you for the video. Quick question. When using SLOG3 and Phantom Luts do I need to convert the footage to Rec 709 first and then drop a phantom LUT on or can I just slap one directly onto the SLOG3 footage? Thank you
I shoot on Sony A7IV and use Divinci Resolve 18
Would anyone know if these LUTs work well applied to a Cinema DNG file, converted from ProResRaw on to my Ninja V from Sony A7s3 S-log footage? Could I apply same workflow, but using the camera raw sliders to make adjustments?
Seriously the most valuable videos on DaVinci color I've seen so far. Is it best to do white balance before or after applying the phantom luts? I don't want to "remove" the look, so to say that the lut creates.
Thanks Mike, so stoked to hear that! I prefer to do most WB adjustments before the Node where the LUT is applied. I feel like as long as you balance your Mids you won't alter the look but I like to balance my blacks also.
👍
Thanks Verano!
Which camera settings do I need to use? Which gammut/log profile to fit Neutral Phantom LUT?
Great video! What values do you suggest I set for zebras when exposing for brown skin tones ? Thanks again!
Thanks man! That's a tricky one to be honest, because it depends on how dark the skin is but I've played with 35 and gotten good results. Maybe give it a test and let me know what works for you?
Would have loved to know your settings in camera before all this
Sure, maybe this video will help ua-cam.com/video/eWNeYWGDvY8/v-deo.html
This video is amazing!! What monitor do you use for editing? And do you calibrate it?
hello men, thx for the video.
Why you applied on the first clip the highlights before and on the mountain clips you did that after the lut?
Thanks¡
Hello Jacques. Your videos are fantastic. And your way of explaining is great. I have a doubt. What tool is used in Adobe Premiere Pro to smooth skin? Thank you so much!
It's the luts work on adobe premier pro?
Yup, any app that can load a LUT (cube file).
Thanks for another super helpful video, Jacques! I am a hybrid shooter and am looking for a Lightroom preset for my Sony A74. Do you sell presets? If not, is there one that you can recommend?
Jacques you're the most underrated Filmmaker on UA-cam ! Your videos are so informative & In depth! It's helps me a lot to increase my Filmmaking experience!
Can you do a video about how to nail White Balance on sony cameras ? Thank you!
Thank you so much Mustafa, really means a lot to me! I'm going to do a tutorial on White Balance soon, hopefully still in Feb :)
Thanks for the tips! Quick question: You say that you did not overexpose, did you expose at around +0.0 for Slog3? I'm using Slog2 with the A7C (8 bit camera) and I've been exposing to the right by 2 stops as everyone typically recommends, so I'm curious about your exposure approach.
You're welcome! It's not a bad move to overexpose with +2.0 on the A7C but if you want to use the Phantom LUT's it's not necessary, so yeah between +0.5 - +1.0 is perfectly fine but always in 4K, I don't trust 1080 in S-Log2 on the 8 Bit cameras, sometimes the image just starts to fall apart.
Do we have to color space transform to rec709 prior to adding the LUT?
My question also. How do you know what color space a LUT is expecting?
This is great work! I feel frustrated that I should be using DaVinci. I am stuck on premiere atm, just seems like there are better fine editing options. with time I guess.
Thank you so much! If I can encourage you at all to make the switch, it's really not that hard. From Premiere Pro it took me about a week or so to get the basics and then another three weeks until I felt comfortable. Switching over was such a turning point for me and I can highly recommend it to anyone, it's a better editor also not just grading!
Color management settings? YRGB and davinci wg?
Jac, can you make a video on your color management? Timeline color space, output color space etc. Do you simply leave it on rec709? Thank you, love your videos brother!
Thanks bro, I plan on doing another video about my workflow soon, will try to work that in :)
Hi Jacques, Hope you're well - thanks always for your videos. Have a question for you - I believe you monitor with a Ninja 5? Do you encounter any difficulty with using Phantom Luts on the monitor, being that there is a difference between the full range of SLOG and the Video range of the monitor's display? I have encountered some color shifts between what I see on set and what I see in Resolve later, and I think it's due to contrast in the monitor.
Any thoughts or insight would be awesome. Thanks!
Thanks alot! Did you tested also the WDR Pre-LUT from the new version of the Phantom Luts?
You're welcome bro! I actually haven't tried the WDR Pre-LUT yet but I hope that this method will teach people what is possible without assistance giving them more control over future grades even when they're not using the Phantom LUTS.
@@jacques_crafford Yeah. Especially to learn how to bring the highlights down was verry helpful to me. Happy waiting for the masking video you told. Thanks alot!
When to add sharpness/detail to the image? Or does the phantom LUT do this? Thanks for the great video!
I never add extra sharpness or detail to my images, the LUT won't do it but I think the camera does a solid job!
Are the phantom LUTS usable on Adobe Premiere Pro?
I hate that I have to use multiple lumetri color for HSL secondary in Premiere Pro and also hate that it is the last step after being applied the lut while I also think it should be an option before applying the lut.
Yeah man, that's the main reason I switched to DaVinci, the options for grading are soooo much better!
Jacques, please tell me about the ProRes codec. More precisely: if you shoot on a Sony a7s3 in 4k, 422, 10bit in a carcass in the native 264 codec, then edit the video in Final Cut and output it to Prores for painting in DAvinci, will this affect the image quality? Or is it better to display in uncompressed?
In short, in what format to render video from Final Cut for further work with color in Resolve, so as not to lose quality? Thank you in advance!
Beautiful shots and good use of light 😍, I wonder if you use a denoiser for S-log3 ? Your shots seems so clean !
Thank you so much! I rarely use Denoiser because I find the Phantom LUTS do a really good job with the blacks if you don't overexpose
Why aren't you using CST while grading? Any reason? Just curious. Ty for a great tutorial.
i have the phantom luts and noticed they expose for 0 and not +2. All the other lut packs i have expose for 2 stops over and have much less noise than using phantom luts.
Yeah with Phantom LUTs I try to expose around 0 but with other LUTs I wouldn't go higher than +1 because I just don't feel like it's necessary.
Sir Please share which profile and you use for slog 3 and settings
Hey bro, I used PP8 without any changes S-Log3 (S3.Gamut.cine) with detail on -7 (but that's standard if you select PP8)
Hi, Jacques! Am i suppose to overexpose with 1,7-2 stops when using the Phantom lut neutral? Seems like i cant get the results i want
Hey bro! Check out the video I made about exposing for S-Log3. I generally overexpose just a little bit, like between 0.3 & 1 Stop
Hey Jacques, what are your project settings for LUT work? Colour science> Davinchi YRGB / Timeline Color Space > SGamut3cine/S-Log3 / Output colour space > Rec709 2.4 ?
Hey Deniz, my camera profile is set to Slog3 with SGamut3.cine - In Resolve my Colour Science is: Davinci YRGB & Timeline Color Space is Rec709A
Fantastic! This was the kind of video I was looking for. Question though, is there significant change or is there any extra colorshift correction needed when using the Phantom luts with the new Sony A7IV? (Since they’re made for A7Siii, FX6 etc.) Or is basically a one click thing like it is with those camera’s? Keep it up!
Awesome, glad you find it helpful Koen! There's no change in the Color, the Phantom LUTs work amazing on the A7iv :)
@@jacques_crafford That’s great to hear! I’ll be looking out for your future videos on these topics. Thanks :)
can you please comment on settings for Color Management : 1) Color science, 2) color processing mode 3) output color space 4) should we check/uncheck automatic color mtg.
Sorry I'll have to do that in a tutorial later, it's just too much to type in a comment. I hope to make one soon!
Stupid question. do they work for Cannon?
Not a stupid question at all! Sadly not yet but I think it's coming!
What would be the most comparable adjustment for "Softening" in Premiere. I see you adjusted Mid/Detail to -40 in Davinci, looking for advice on the same in Premiere.
I can't remember what it's called but it's there for sure, I've done it in the past but I switched almost two years ago!
I'm not seeing in qualifyer in Final Cut Pro. What effect is it?
Dope content.... But can you do a video on dark skin with the PL🙏

Hello, thank you very much for your content, although I use subtitles to understand, I really like to see your content, what lens can you recommend me to record in 4k 60fps with my sony a7iv?
Thanks Angelo, so glad you can still watch it! I recommend the 24-70mm F/2.8, because even with the crop it's still a decent focal length for most wider shots and the extra crop on the long end is really helpful!
Or use the sigma 16mm f1.4 apc lens!
@@petervis1999 One lens apsc is as sharp as one full frame for video? thanks for answer. 👍
I noticed that one of the ARRI Log luts that come by stock on Davinci is exactly the same than the Phantom LUTs (once added a bit of contrast)…
It's possible that it will be close but I know for a fact Joel Famularo spent ages refining it to what it is today.
Can i use that LUT´s for Fx6 Footage?
Hi Jacques, love your work and I learn a great deal from your channel. Just a thought though, may be its just the youtube compression in this video, I feel what you are doing with softening the highlights on her face or the background by selecting the highlights it starts to look a bit clampy after the tweak. Again it may be looking different on your monitor than on youtube? Cheers
Thanks for your feedback Naveen! To be honest, I viewed it on multiple monitors and I love the look, not 100% sure what you're referring to.
@@jacques_crafford Hi Jacques, Never mind, may be its just me :)
Yes, I knew about phantom lut but it's not for camera Sony as7s2.
Only in 4K with exact exposure & WB, then it works but not in HD with too many tweaks
Can this lut be used for zve10 footage?
I think you do great in color grading and editing, love your work and explination on how you do it all, great work flow.. I want to do this kind of work, simple, nice, and clean :)

Phantom LUT's tells us to set detail to -7 for PP8... whats your take on that and how do you sharpen that footage in post? I mean we could leave Detail at 0 or not?
Aaah yes, it's actually -7 by default on PP8, so I have always left it like that. I always shoot with detail / sharpness on the lowest setting in-camera. The footage is already sharp enough for my taste.
