Damian Dame were an American R&B group that was active in the early 1990s. It consisted of Bruce Edward "Damian" Broadus (September 13, 1966 - June 27, 1996) and Debra Jean "Deah Dame" Hurd (September 20, 1958 - June 27, 1994).
In 1991 Damian Dame became the first act signed to LaFace Records, co-founded by Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, for whom Hurd once sang backing vocals. The duo released their eponymous debut album on May 14, 1991, yielding the singles "Exclusivity" and "Right Down to It," which peaked at 1 and 2 respectively on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as well as 42 and 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively, and "Gotta Learn My Rhythm."

Hurd was killed in a car accident in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 27, 1994; she was 35 years old.[1] Broadus died of colon cancer at the age of 29 on June 27, 1996, exactly two years after Hurd's death, and less than a week after his first solo album, 199Sex, was released.

We Love the 80s, 90s & 00s!
I remember Damian Dame. I bought the cassette. “Exclusivity” was the jam. “Right Down To It” was a nice ballad. The production on that vibe set the stage for The Highland Place Mobsters and TLC. Keep being the keeper of R&B culture!
Yes
Tell em about Highland Place Bro! They came with the hardcore r&b b4 DRS & Jodeci perfected their image. 😎
Yeah. They were good. Rip to them both
Absolutely loved their debut album. It's unfortunate that both artists passed away. They were immense contributors to the industry.
I was a little kid when they came out, I always wondered what happened. Then I did internet searching and found out what happened.
Damn they both gone 😪 was shocked to find out Vesta Williams passed I just discovered her music like 2 years ago.
She died from a car accident andhe died 2 years to the day from cancer. Now that's crazy
I stopped the video as soon as he said they passed away but I remember them all too well and I remember when they passed away. She was in a car accident (if I’m remembering correctly) June 27, 1994 and he had colon cancer (same cancer I was diagnosed with at age 33) and passed away June 27, 1996. Exactly 2 years apart. I think I still have the newspaper article announcing his death. Rest In Peace Damian Dame! I think they deserve an Unsung episode.
I still listen to “Right Down To It” almost daily.
Wishing you good health and many years to come !!
Heard he was found with his head cut off neighbors heard the screams
Sidenote; I was at the JACK THE RAPPER convention to perform and promoting my album with the help of my friend pornstar Vanessa DelRo at the Atlanta Hilton hotel. All of a sudden a marching band came marching single file through the lobby straight to the pool area and right behind them were these two guys in suits and sunglasses. It was L.A. and Babyface. That was the moment they announced the launching of LaFace Records and the debut of Damion Dame. Prince performed there that year as well debuting Diamonds and Pearls !! GREAT TIMES in music history !!
Wow amazing story 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
RIGHT DOWN TO IT WAS MY JAM....I LOVED THEM VERY UNDERRATED, SAD HOW THEY ENDED
I remember Damian Dame! I bought the cassette in 1991 I will never forget because it was senior year of High School. Excellent album IMO! So glad it became available for streaming. The also reminded me of a 90s version of Yarborough and Peeples.
RIP 🕊🕊
I loved Debra's solo album right before she was in the group, her voice reminds me of Michel'le. I did some browsing online and found a few pics of her right before her passing. I always loved her style, made a memorial page for her recently & glad to know her family / friends love it.
She talked alot like Michel'le! I love their song 🎵 'Virgin Islands' ❤!
Yup very reminiscent of Michel'le
Believer is the jam to this day!! Ms. Debra’s bob hair cut with the inverted bang. RIP to them both🕊️
I remember them well, I had no idea they both passed away. I really liked their music and was so sadden by Dea Dame’s death.
Yes I love them. They died so young.
I remember them well. Right Down to It is one of my favorite records. For me it is the quintessential LaFace R&B sound of that time. I was in 8th grade and being in Atlanta, we really loved that record. Possibly, it didn't connect with a wider audience, but RIP to Damian Dame, we haven't forgotten you.
I Loved The Song As Well. It Played Often In Area I'm From Atlanta (Atlanta, Texas).
I remember them. They were very unique and different kind of talent. I like both of their songs "Exclusivity" and "when it gets right down to it"..Both nice songs...Rest in peace Damian Dame
YASSSS! I must say I am their NUMBER 1 FAN PERIOD! I heard & listen to their album to this day constantly ❤. I have some of Debra Jean Hurd's vinyl from BEFORE she was even in Damien Dame & I even messed with Damien's project he dropped, 199SEX, after Debra (Deah Dame) passed and the WHOLE ALBUM is a banger!🙌🏾 He has a song on there called "Cool Shit" that I constantly still quote & sing in 2022... Anyway, they are LEGENDARY!❤❤
Yes, they are legendary... May The Both of Them R.I.P💕💕💕
Rest In Peace Damian dame. I really liked their music.
She was a beautiful angel
I Remember Damim Dane. That Duo was so very, very, very talented. I love theit music so very much. RIP Damian Dane🙏💜
Right Down To It" by Damien Dame in tha 90's was a banger. 🔥 I loved that song. I was like 11, 12 at time. They was really a good group.
I remember them and the song right down to it. It was a bop.I was a little girl when my parents played them
Exclusivity was such a strong song! I just knew it was gonna go crazy...I was so sad to hear about each of their passings.
Exclusivity was a strong song. Deah sang honey on that song. I liked that song also.
Daryl isn’t giving them enough credit, we know exactly who they are! I’m sure other people saw their pic and clicked, like I did.
I love listening to stations with “old school” R&B mixes, because I look forward to hearing a couple of minutes of songs like Exclusivity.
Exactly, because we most definitely knew them, that first hit was the jam. I loved their first hit... When It gets right down to it.
I know I definitely clicked seeing them!
I don’t remember them but I’m younger, I clicked because of his hair.
@@marshascott6107 I don't know them and I was a TOTAL "music head" and worked in the music industry for a short period............I do remember hearing their name though.
I had forgotten about Damien Dame for a while during the late 90's and 2000's. Because we never heard from them again. I didn't know both of them had already died in the 90's until maybe a couple of years ago when I looked them up. I saw both died a year apart on the exact same day. That was eerie to me! They were both great artists! I wish someone would do a little documentary or do an Unsung on them.
I made an error. They both died 2 years apart on the same day. Debra in 94 & Bruce in 96.
@@shante70sb 💯
Yo...that's crazy
There is a channel on UA-cam that did a little I guess you'd call it a mini documentary. Talking about how they got started and what happened in their subsequent untimely deaths. It's all info you'd probably find on wikipedia's website but it's a good one still imo. Its called Celebrity Underrated if you care to check it out.
Thats because the got s@crificed mz b
Deah died in the summer of 1994 in a bad traffic accident. She was in her 30s. Damian died on the second anniversary of Deah's death in the summer of 1996 of an illness; rumors vary regarding the nature of the illness. He was only 29 years old and left behind a wife and child. His wife was a well-known hairstylist in ATL.
I remember the hairstylist you’re talking about. She was also featured on Keyshia Cole’s reality show
Wow I did not know that!!! Gheesh
Wow!!
@@EriLovesCameras I remember her too seeing her on a VH1 show with Tboz and Chilli in 2002
The song Exclusivity has been on my playlist for years. Still playing it. One of my faves.
Played them this Morning at the Gym + i'm in the ATL So Something just made Me think of them! They did "TAKE oFF" Almost Nobody in My Age from the Atl Doesn't Know who they Were!!!
I don't understand why he's saying that the album didn't do anything. Both of the first two singles were top-10 R&B hits; it seemed like the label stopped promoting after that...there was a long gap between the second single and the third. I feel like there were probably artistic disagreements. Years later, Kenny Lattimore did a nice remake of "When You Get Right down to It"; but their original was a standout at the time.
A mystery
The album didn't sell as well as it could have because they never toured for the album.. they did a promo tour and a couple of interviews ( soul train , party machine , apollo ) but not an official nationwide tour
I definitely remember the group Damian Dame... because of his look and that song When It Gets Right Down to It! Thanks for letting us know how the story unfolded. So sad.
I remember clearly when they 1st came out with "Exclusivity". Debra talked just like the singer Michele'le.
Yes they was wonderful!
Good content! Rest In Paradise Damian Dame 🙏🏿🙏🏿
🙏🏾
I was in Jr. High when they came out. I remember they killed on Showtime at the Apollo & we were talking about it the next day at school.
I was a teenager when I first heard their music, loved their style and sound❤Rest Peacefully
Thanks for posting this!
I was a big fan of this couple!
Wondered what happened to them.
Exclusivity was really my jam.
i remeber them too. i loved their music. when it gets right down was the bomb.
I still listen to “Right Down To It” I love that song! ❤
Remember I was talking about them in my interview… May Peace Be Upon Deah and Damian!!!
I definitely remember them when I’m crying was my favorite song by them
Yes I remember Damian Dame.I was a Teenager hearing Two of their songs on the radio which I loved I forgot she had a Voice like Michele.'
I remember them very well. They were awesome.
This was my favorite record, I was I in a singing group that did originals and covers performing at Malls and festivals throughout the central coast and southern California and I was always singing their music in my shows 😂 I was just a kid but that record continued to inspire through out my entertainment career.
Oh I remember them…I was in 8th grade… and these two singles were banging!!
Love both of them. Sad that they passed away 2 years apart on the same day. RIP.
When You Get Right Down To It was the bomb. When I heard they passed away almost within a year and in the same day. Those of us who know, know what's up with that.
@@emoore8478 What do you think 🧐🤔💭 happened? I just hope that they both wasn't murdered or something crazy like that.
@@brianpaschal5430 sacrificed
According to what I read, she died in a car accident on June 27, 1994 and he died of colon cancer on the same day two years later
Bro I'm so glad you're doing a video on this!! I still listen at then nearly everyday out here on the road... I was just thinking about them the other day and how strange it was that both of them died on the exact same day a year apart, shit like that just dont happen....
🙏🏾
*2 years apart
I remember this group. Such a tragedy. Rest in peace.😪😪
Exclusivity was a nice summer banger and Right Down To It and Gotta Learn My Rhythm were good follow-up singles.
I came here to escape pound town🙌🏿....Yes we remember Damian Dame. They made such good music. I have Right down to it, love it today just like I did then. Very underrated and definitely Unsung, if not featured on there yet. Been a while since I watched the show.
Before joining the group, Deah had been Babyface's duet partner on his 1986 hit, "Faithful", which was featured on Babyface's solo debut album.
Actually they died 2 years apart. Deah passed in a car accident in 1994. And Damian died of AIDS related causes in 1996 just a few days after releasing his solo album titled Nineteen Ninety Sex
Really liked them, had their album and thought it was excellent.
I remember how shocking it was for me to hear that both group members passed away 2 years to the date of each other.
I also remember the group, Starpoint (Object Of My Desire), whose members, Renée Diggs and Ernesto Phillips, passed away in March '05 and March '04 almost a year to the date of each other.
RIP to all of them. 🙏🏾🕊🙏🏾🕊
It maybe Alot of Theories on their passing from both groups.. Maybe we will hear the Real Truth One Day😟🤷

@@sisterbellakablue3248 yeah people have to look 'deeper', it's absolutely a murder-by-numbers situation.
I got the CD. Boy it was banging! Sorry they BOTH passed. May they both R.I.P
I remember them very well. I loved their music 🎶
Look them up if you haven't Halftime Chat. Damian Dame's album was dope! A Great listen!
I've been listening to a few tracks since the interview
@@HalftimeChat 👍🏾👍🏾
@@HalftimeChat when I saw Damian Dame on Soul Train with late Don C. They voice was was incredible amazing and there style . T.L.C and Kris Kross .rest peace each member .
That album is 🔥. I love Exclusivity the remix. They really get off on that.
I remember that group, I bought the album the first time I heard 1 song, the entire album was great. LaFace record took off with them. That album was a smash, it was so unfortunate when they died so young.
Still to this day one of the best album on La Face Records! RIP to these two great artists!
Wow! Thanks for bringing back memories of this gem of a duo! Definitely still listening to “get right down to it” loved this duo I could hear the Laface vibe in the song cause it definitely sounded like something baby face would sing.
Daryl is right, I had that CD and I played that so much through the 90s and I still play the Video on UA-cam
Exclusivity was the JAM!
Battle Creek Michigan Finest!!!
Wow...what a flashback. I had to look them up and as soon as I saw the album cover, I got a flashback! This album was fire!! RIP to them both.
That was the first CD I've ever bought...and I STILL play it after 31 years.
I've always been a big fan of them. My favorite song was right down to it. I still have tha cassette. Love ❤️ it.
I remember them and their song Right Down To It! My mom bought their album/cassette and we would listen to it all the time.
I remember them and the group Koffee Brown. I keep “Exclusivity” in rotation. Continue to Rest In Peace.
I Remember Them and I Still have their cd Great Music Bless them ❤️🤎
I had their cassette tape. Sad how they passed away
I loved "When it gets right down to it". Radio stations played the hell outta that song back n the day. I'll never forget reading about both of their deaths I was attending college and I was so shocked. Crazy, makes me wonder if they were cursed or something.... that "sacrifice" thing they be talkin about now.
This is cousin Bruce 💙
WOW, I always wondered what happened to them 🔥🔥🔥👌🏾‼️
I remember this group and that song was everything. 2 souls gone too soon.
Bout to pull it out. Amazing cd !!! Jam after jam !!! So sad they both passed way to young. Ty for this reminder.
I remember Damian Dame used to love the song exclusivity what you want from me is what I want from you. The girl with the hair in the profile picture would wear my hair like hers in the 80’s I believe I know it’s been a minute I forget the decade actually almost in my 50…lol
Ok I remember now that was in the new hack city swagger era
Loved Loved Loved "Right down to it"
The album wasn't exactly a flop as "Exclusivity" went to number one and "Right down to it" was number two.
That's crazy because as soon as I heard TLC's "Baby, Baby, Baby" I realized LA and Face had recycled a song from their earlier work with them-lol!
@@JBurnettbillz Honestly, I never noticed the similarities.
I remember that music duo was the bomb. In 2022 just learned that they were signed to LAFace recording executive
Indeed. Damian Dame’s first album was highly underrated. TLC made their first appearance on this album as Second Nature with just TBoz and Left Eye at the time. They hadn’t added Chili yet.
That makes sense as Daryl said Chilli was the dancer for Deborah
Listening to them "right now" in 2022.
Good to hear Daryl talk about them . I vividly remember buying "Exclusivity" on 12" vinyl when it got imported into the UK , the album never got a UK release . I then found a promotional cd single , it came in flip out card with some info about the group . Loved the album . Also check out Damian's soul album released in 96 called "199SEX" . It was released on an indie label called Chip Records , bizzarly I visited the label that year & I remember the label owner taking me in a room where he stocked all thier CD releases , Thier was boxes of that Damien album just sat there . I am sure they are long gone now . I really miss them .
I never knew them even when I lived in America. Sad story
I used to love them. I don't know why they didn't take off either. I wore that cassette tape out.
I remember having their cassette tape! Those were the days. They were a great group! R.I.P. to both of them. So unfortunate. smh.
I remember them they were a good group so sad they lost their life in tragedy.
I remember them man I loved them
So sad for them GOD bless them .
It was a great album, still listening!!
I remember Exclusivity was a hit back in 91 it use to be play summer of 91.
Also to Remember Damian Dame you had to watch B.E.T.
Never heard of them before watching this. Anyway RIP to both them 😪.
I remember she died in a car crash in Atlanta and he died of colon cancer two years later on the same day.
I never forgot Damian Dame. Exclusivity is a favorite from my childhood
I remember that song, Exclusivity...it was a banger! I remember Damian Dame, a friend guy of mine had that same haircut.❤❤
I grew up on the music of Michael Jackson and then a certain Bobby Brown released his album with productions from L.A and Babyface. And then one day I walked past the New Top 30 record store in Brussels and I hear: Kayo is in the House De Rock is in the House LA is in the Place So Face Pump up the bass. From that Day I started to search for the writers, producers name, label, etc.... God Bless Damian Dame Rest in Peace. Thank you for the songs , melodies etc... And Special thank for one particular which was not hit of the album called Trumpet Man!!! Half Time Chat: Like Trevor Nelson used to say on on the mtv show the Lick/Base. I SALUTE YOU!!!!!
Thank you 😊
Check out the whole interview with Daryl Simmons as he talks about Kayo and why he doesn't produce as much
Loved Damian Dame ❤ I remember them 🙌🏾🙌🏾🤎🤎🤎🙏🏽✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
I remember them!!! Loved the music!

Beautiful song
Loved this duo. ❤❤❤
I don't think people were ready for that guy's look in the 90's.
No people weren't. Sometimes I would look at him and say what the hell are you wearing?

Went to listen to right down to it. Sound totally like a babyface song. I see why he loved that joint. Very good song
