This video was in the scrap pile but decided it maybe useful to someone so here it is.The Antenna works unbelievably well and incredibly well locally beam to beam.
Although it is cut for 27.500 i have adjusted the Gamma for UK40 Channel 20 which is 1.1 which moves me into 10m CW with ease and although a little high at 2.1 on 27.000mhz you will find the Gamma match is very tunable for quite a decent bandwidth.
Here are the results and element cutting measurements:
SWR,
26.500mhz 2.5
27.700mhz 2.1
27.555mhz 1.5
27.791mhz 1.1
28.000mhz 1.4
28.100mhz 1.7
28.300mhz 2.6
Each Element length for 27.500 with standard Gamma measurements is:
Reflector 2837mm
Driven 2570mm
Director 2510mm

had the four element version 36ft in the air since 2015 despite buying it in 2009. once you work the flatside you'll never go back to dxing with a vertical as it'll hear stations that wouldn't even register on a vertical
Yeah i have been finding this thing has some serious ears, hopefully the bands will pick up shortly to get the best out if it.Thanks for visiting.
A very nice antenna shrink fit on all the joins and it will not let any water get in
I was just going to use self amalgamating tape but yeah that could be a plan in some areas.I still haven’t settled on a coax choice yet, that is just mini 8 from a roll i had from the 90’s.
I use the same it's all right does formy run from antenna and into my bungalow and into my radio room it's ok goes around sharp bends easily.
I have a Sirio 10/11Mhz vertical I put up a couple months ago. I have it tuned to the 10m band and have been extremely impressed with its performance. It is well made and was easy to put together. Now I may have to try the yagi antenna.
This really is a great antenna and isn’t overly big or expensive.Im tempted to try the 4 element version in near future with a similar video.
Dear friends,
I am radio amateur from Armenia, Yerevan! EK6NK. I have purchased Sirio SY-3 yagi antenna for 11/10 meters in Paris in the shop!
We tuned it how it was written in instruction and it worked very well on the floor/ground by using test mast for only 2 meters height. By antenna analyser we got good conditions of antenna data like: 1,11 SWR, 52 ohm impedance, -25.3db returne loss(see attached picture). But after installation on metallic-steel roof we have very bad data, we thought it is height of antenna and we increase it from 2.10 meter from roof to 2.80 meter, but no good changes(see attched picture). Also we have second VHF/UHF antenna on the same mast with vertical polarisation higher from Sirio by 1,5 meters(see attached picture). When we rotating antenna from South to North it working better, but not so good that we prefer. What do you think? What is our mistake? What to do ?
Thank you in advance for advices
Best regards, 73
At an educated guess i would probably say the metal roof could be causing a bit of an issue but to what degree i am unsure. I am guessing the SWR is higher but is it unusable?
@ no, it is usable with ATU but I think antenna gain is not good, that’s why I want to have good data
@ Could you try it up high away from the steel roof?
Just had the SY27-4 delivered and was wondering how broad banded it would be from a planned 28.400 mhz set up. The SWR measurements you provided answered my question before I even put mine together. Thank you for taking the time and effort to provide this information on your set-up of the antenna. I'm looking forward to getting mine up in the air. Great video! 73.
The Bandwidth with the 4 Element is a bit narrower than the 3 but it will cover all the 10m band without any problem whatsoever.. I was actually going to try the 4 element myself but i am hankering for a Quad next, maybe someday i will try it though.
Looks a very similar build to my di-pole, but suggest you seal up the connecting parts as I had bad water ingress, so used some aluminium grease and amalgamating tape, on each connection . Nice build though.
Thanks AL…Yeah the whole thing wants sealing up when i finally decide on a Rotator.I know what i want but the price makes me cringe.😁
Good info great video, I'd be more inclined to slide the end tubes inside each element and drill new holes for the band you want to use it on rather than sawing the tubes down - I'm sure that would work too?
Thanks…Yeah that would work fine, just remember to take your time getting the measurements right as these work really well if set up correctly…Thanks for visiting
@gtretroworld Thanks for the advice all the best.
@@dannystephenson4957 No Worries..I am planning to try the 4 element version sometime down the road as well as a 3 element quad so watch this space.
@@gtretroworld Most certainly will, can't believe the good quality for what you pay.
A tip guys. Use heatshrink tubing over element joints, i use the ones with glue inside. Dont forget same with gamamatch😎
Yes, Definitely recommend if you plan on leaving it up permanently. 👍
Mine has just arrived this morning and it's a sunny day. Usually it's pissing down for a month when I get a new antenna 😂
Antenna on hold got knocked off my motorcycle and need surgery to rebuild my leg. Always the same when a new antenna arrives 😂
@@DiscusRussell Sorry to hear that bud, i am just in the process of restoring a 1960 Lambretta, not much chance of injuring myself on one of them. Take it easy.
@@gtretroworld I was on a Honda C90 cub. It doesn't matter what you're on it still hurts😂
I assembled & put mine up about 1 month ago & it worked very well, but recently the SWR went very high.
I failed to waterproof the Gamma match tuning area where the rod goes into the other rod, and I think rain got inside due to recent bad weather.
I've read a few reports of this area being susceptible.
Is yours still doing OK, & did you watetproof everything, including where I mention?
@@fourbyten5490 I was using it for just under a year and removed it to use a home brew Quad that never materialised, However i did use self amalgamated tape on all the joints and never had an issue.
Hello,
Great tutorial.
I've just bought this, and I'm about ready to construct it.
With the elements cut to 27.5 as you have, is it possible to alter the Gamma match to get a SWR lower than 1.5:1 as you have, please?
I do most of my operating between 27.400 - 27.600, so I would ideally want my SWR at 1.1:1 at 27.500.
Many thanks in advance.
@@harrybatt998 Yes you should be able to get it down a bit more if you only want that narrow bandwidth , unsure about 1.1 though, just take your time as it is quite twitchy.
Looks great. I'm a new m7. Currently got a cb vertical cut down for 10m. I'm looking for a 10m yagi that I can put up around 25ft or so (above my roof line but not much). Would you recommend this one?
This Yagi is Superb on 10m it really is. If you end up buying one just take your time setting it up as it is so worth it. Thanks for visiting the channel.
@@gtretroworld you're welcome. How high did you end up putting it? And which rotator did you use?
@@antonybuck2126 I had it around 25ft up but didn’t bother using the Rotator as i am still waiting to organise a proper tilt mast. Most of the DX i was doing was West so i just left it in that direction.
I bought the Yaesu G450 DC but it’s still boxed.
I am currently working on a Quad build but seriously this Beam is a bargain.
@@gtretroworld good point, can just point it over towards USA and leave it there haha. I'm very new so not sure how it all works. Why get a 4 beam if this is good enough?
@@antonybuck2126 I am just getting Gain Greedy so ignore me.😂I initially was going to upgrade to the 4 element version of this but really fancy a Cubical Quad.
Seriously for DX the 3 element will impress you.
I will have a video up in the new year showing the Quad if you’re interested.
good video, do you have good results with this antenna in DX?
apparently you made the cuts for 27,500 Mhz and according to these cuts do you have a good swr on 27,500 and what is the bandwidth please
I have the 4 elements but not yet assembled. 73's
The antenna is superb so although the 4 element with have a smaller bandwidth the extra gain should be pretty good.
For 10m and let’s Say 27,385 I used the radios ATU but it was still very good.If you plan on just using it for 11m just work out the centre of where you plan on working and cut for that.My measurements and SWR readings are in the description.
Interesting To See How It Performs 🤔🤔👍👍
Conditions are hit and miss ATM but it is incredible for what it is,a couple of nights ago Mexico AM 25w.
Hi gt wonder if you still have spec sheet and could you please put up the boom length and spacing between the elements I have a four but don’t have the room for it I know it’s possible to shorten just don’t know what the measurements are hope you can help me
Yeah no problem, Boom is 2680mm, between the reflector and driven element is 1440mm and driven to director is 1240mm. Hope this helps.
@@gtretroworld thanks gt got some rebuild to do👍👍👍👍💯
Sirio builds really good and also cheap CB radio antennas, I often use the 4 Element Yagi Beam horizontally for mountain radio, 73 from Tommy 📡
For value nothing beats Sirio antennas Tommy, i plan on building the 4 element over the summer when the good weather finally arrives.
@@gtretroworld Try a delta loop. A 2 element loop will outperform this antenna. Shame Vortex went tits up
@@DiscusRussell I have materials to build a few Quads that i want to try but a delta loop is definitely on the cards sometime.
Hi Neil.. is this a S0239 coupling for the pl259 plug.
These are the usual male SO239 mount fitment Glenn, so basically the antenna is a PL259 that fits SO239 mounts if you get me.
@@gtretroworldYeah so it's basically the same as screwing up a normal base fed dipole like a half wave..
Im Going to order one later today but I live in a bungalow and wondering just how obnoxious it will look when up in the air 😂
What do you think are they too much or are they not that bad in size..?
My neighbours aren't an issue I just don't want anything to obstructive.
@@DeltaXray444 Ignore the Above Glenn as i thought you were referring to my latest Video with the ATAS 120. I didn’t even look where the question originated from in studio 😂.
So yes just the usual PL259 plug to the antennas SO239, as for the size put it this way you’re not going to find anything smaller unless it is trapped.
@@gtretroworld I meant to ask you the antenna in the instructions says it's set for centre frequency.. do you know what channel that is and what the swr is.
Im Not sure if you mentioned it in the video or I may have got cross wires..
Also sorry to be a pain in the ass.. if the antenna is set up as per the instructions is there any need to cut the ends or is that necessary..
I've only ever put up a five element before but it was a mates and everything was pre marked with a black marker pen so the swr was set, I've never taken a new one and assembled it so im a little fuzzy headed as to what to cut or not to cut 🤷🏼♂️ help me out buddy I've only been on the radio 47 years and im a nube. 😂
@@DeltaXray444 I set mine for my requirements for 10/11m but it was quite a tight bandwidth, worked extremely well with a quick tune of the ATU though. I cut it for around 27.800mhz at 1.1. Unless you plan on using 10m i would drop the centre a good chunk lower. Hope this helps.
Теперь Лысый будет греметь на 27555 😊
Я бы для крепления элементов добавил бы хомуты из нержавеющей стали, а пластиковые чёрные штуки не ставил . Ещё бы не помешало все смазать токопроходящей пастой .
The Bald one as you say is hoping to thunder once we see some better propagation.😁
Once i install it on a Rotator it will be well sealed.
Теперь мистер байден будет громко слышен 😂 на эту антенну

Blessed love bro, Can you send me the specification for this antenna, watching from Jamaica west Indies !!
Hi Peter,Here is a link to the full specifications: www.sirioantenne.it/en/products/hf/sy-3

I got the same sy-27 3ele in the box awaiting installation, so I'll enjoy watching g this video, the only advice I can give is don't erect indoors lol 😂 GL
Ideal for quick installations but I would recommend taping the joints especially the boom joint.
Something for the bike & quick installation, Spiderpole 10m & Hawkins Thunderbolt Ssd12+ or ssd58+ 5.5m/7.5m wire & coil, up in 2mins.
105,95,93mm cut from each x6 legs not the gamma-match, I'll be happy with 11m and didn't want to start cutting things, but if needed I wanna do it right 1st time.
What rotor you going for??
@@EdzashedFudwinkle Yeah just think before you cut but the bandwidth with mine is fine for my needs.
I actually boomed into Mexico last night on AM with 25w.SWR was 2.7 but the ATU didn’t mind.I definitely didn’t expect that result at the bottom of 26mhz as it’s nowhere long enough.
I am going for the Yaesu 450 Rotator, the new DC version.
ILL SAY MATE I REALLY LOVE HIS VIDEO I LOVE SEEING PEOPLE PUT ANTENNAS TOGETHER AFTER ITS ALL DONE YOUR ON THE AIR WHOOT...
Thanks, i will be doing a good few of these sort of videos as the weather improves. Thanks for visiting the channel.
Great video. I am going to get one
Thanks…For the money they’re a bargain and work extremely well, just take your time setting them up.
I built one of those about 55 years ago, it was portable and tuneable, nowadays everyone buys. Where is your SWR meter or your VNWA. Without that you have nothing but a craw nest of aluminium.
I was a mere UA-cam fledgling when i did this video and still are but did mention SWR Ratio’s in the description, future antenna videos will definitely include visible Results…Thanks for visiting.
Hi....is 28mhz tuneable on this sirio SY 3 elements Yagi? I am planning to get one. Thanks.
@@stephendenniswho Yes no problem at all, just cut it down the suit.
Thanks
105/95/93mm? You couldn't change the gamma match.
I have the same antenna waiting to go up
It really depends where you want to operate.I use this for 10/11m so decided to sort of widen its bandwidth.Cutting 93mm off the Director,95mm off the driven and 105mm off the Reflector gives these results.1.1 around 27,900/1.5 on 27,500mhz.The Gamma match will only match so much but like i say it really depends where you want to operate.I will say though it is a fantastic antenna if you take your time setting it up.
hello, how long does it take to install this antenna? I would use it for portable
If you had all the elements built up you could have this up and running for portable work in 10-15 minutes. Probably the same again if you had to build the elements up.
does it get ITV2 ?
It would need chopping right down for ITV2😁,pretty impressive though, even local talking to Alan beam to beam was superb.God knows what it will be like with a bit of coal on the fire.😁
@@gtretroworld yeah beams are a must now surely. A bit of directionality must cut out some of this electronic hash from all the WiFi and shit
@@treborrobert2 Unsure about not picking up noise as everyone is suffering on the bands ATM as conditions are weird, they do definitely blow smoke though to anyone else on the flatside.I’ll send you some sample videos over later.

Had one 20 odd years only been up 3 times tho' they work well tho
They work extremely well for the money..I will be doing the same with the 4 element in the Summer as well as a home built Quad for 10/11m.

@@unroyaloldhamian6759 I have quite a lot of back in the box items myself, friends think i have issues but i don’t care..haha
Instead of the plastic sleeve to connect the elements would a jubilee clip do the same job
The sleeve doesn’t really do alot other than make things look neat.I suppose if you wanted to you could do away with them and the self tapping screws and use jubilee clips but you would need to cut slots on every joint.Hope this helps.
What is L1 and L2 ?
It is the adjustment area for the Gamma match.
Looks a good antenna bet you were swearing when you dropped that grub screw lol
You obviously know me to well hence the mass edits 😂

Which meter would you like to see?

DX will die out for years soon and horizontal won't work very good for local.
There’s still plenty of time buddy, horizontal is fantastic locally with a few i know as they’re also on the flat side. Thanks for visiting the channel.
@@gtretroworld The peak of cycle 25 is now, and skip conditions will fade to nothing over the next few years to nothing for years during minimum. Horizontal polarization doesn't work well for local communication and that's just a fact. Just because you can use your antenna doesn't mean it works well. Most signals are vertically polarized. I have been doing this longer than you have been alive. You're a newbie and it shows. You're outing yourself. And I'm not your buddy, numps.
@@gtretroworld It'll be dead soon, and it'll be useless. You may talk local but not very well or very far. Most signals are vertically polarized. You're obviously a newbie. Plus that yagi is only around 10 db gain, less than 1.5 S units. Not really worth the effort and expense to talk to strange men on a box.
@@terryparker1925 Unsure if i am classed as a newbie and have used horizontal antennas well over 30 years. I literally only talk to friends locally and not strangers as there’s only a handful still on. For example with a friend who is around 15 miles away both running vertical we average around S7, Yagi to his quad is around S10.
I agree there’s definitely a place for vertical but for me personally it isn’t essential for 11m.
Are you ok sir? Are you upset about something? @terryparker1925
