So glad I have a transmission dipstick in my 2010 Corolla and 2001 Solara Convertible. No dipstick is just another removed item (like the transition from spin-on oil filter to that cartridge filter) to discourage DIY’s and promote more services from the “stealership”

Great find my Friend. Maybe a bad rear main seal, power steering seals and bad brake caliper. Oh and a transmission flush of course.

Good catch on the wheel. For the oil on the bell housing, if its dark like motor oil than yes the rear seal. Make sure its not leaking from behind the intake and running down. If its kind of red than the torque converter seal.

Would clean/de-grease area and then run truck while elevated- watch for 30 minutes. De-greasing the area is key #1. IF you have another person who can go lock to lock on the steering while its hoisted to see how badly the steering rack is leaking: I have seen power steering fluid slung around in many places.

I think the leak may be a rear main seal. I had the same issue with the last 2000 Nissan Frontier 4X4 I owned. It leaked in the same fashion. Sold that truck, which was a decent truck in March 2019. Then, used the money to buy my 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR 4x4. I REALLY like the Tacoma!

Peter, If the engine compression is still as impressive as the condition of the truck's body and frame, I think the owner should go ahead with all repairs necessary to keep this truck on the road for another 15 years. BTW UA-cam itself was on the repair hoist last night when I first tried to watch this video ;-)

Rear main seal , gotta pull either engine or trans I believe. I would pull trans. Big job, good $, but really... doesn’t *have* to be done but if the customer wants it done... do it!
If it was me and it wasn’t dripping, just seeping, I would leave it alone and just do the brakes and flush trans.

There are some rear main seal products that work and don't work. I would try at least before the big job unless money is no object. I forget which people have tried them. I know Scotty likes AT-205 Reseal. And I think FixitAngel tried Blue Devil but don't quote me on that. And probably a ton more that don't do anything. Might even give Maxlife a try as well but that takes at least one or two full oil change cycles to work on the seals. Someone needs to figure out something with that. $10 seal, 100x labor cost, more or less.

@Sam S he tested products to see which would increase combustion. More in a real world application to maybe have combustion blowby with stuck or gummed up piston rings and worn cylinders. Restore showed great results by him. Legendary man. Just the stuff he comes up with to test products. If the apocalypse comes I'd want him as my outpost leader.

Sealed transmission = when the warranty ends. Trucks work, tow and haul. This puts stress on the transmission and it's fluid. Change your fluids. Also, good sauerkraut is worth its weight in gold.

    • @LAactor
      @LAactor 3 роки тому +2

Lifetime fluid = until life of transmission ends. Usually right after warranty ends. Change it.
Change it at the halfway point if you tow. There's a reason transmission coolers exist on tow package trucks.
Eat your sauerkraut. And thanks for watching. That should be his new signoff tag.

Love your videos. I bought a 2006 tundra 4.0L with 35k miles. Toyota changed transmission at 64k miles. I had to change transmission again at 85k miles due to radiator failure that put coolant in my transmission. Now I have another transmission and ran it straight to trans cooler, rather than radiator. Still shudders so it looks like driver side motor mounts bad. After I fix it I will trade it in for a Subaru. Tired of Toyota tundras. It was my first and last truck I ever had. Thanks buddy

I have an '04 sequoia 2 wheel drive with 230,000 miles on it. I had similar brake issues. It was caused by the inner brake line liner collapsing and not allowing the fluid to return from the calipers. A very annoying problem. You have to replace the flexible sections of the brake system and pray you got the offending item.

Maybe pour it on a bright white plastic sheet or on white paper... Great for video... That dirty container isn't so great, even if the inside is clean. How about clear plastic cups?
When you use larger containers for a side by side, an led flashlight with a small diameter lens going through the fluid would be great.

Inspect brake caliper for being defected, also check to see if the brake line rubber section is defected. It can partially clogged and not releasing the brake pressure all the way. And as for the other leak you described it sounds like a rear main seal oil leak.

Even as of 6 months ago it would give a bit of a thud, but that’s what he’d done since day one. This is a pronounced kick...
Not sure where to start with the solution, but the only thing my non-mechanically inclined mind can think of is low fluid levels in the transfer case? But then I’d think that going into 4WD would be affected too, but it’s exactly as it’s always been...

Got a 2002 tundra. It's got enough of my blood from skinned knuckles to lube the engine with no oil. First, that's a seized caliper on the brakes. That model had a technical bulletin on it to replace the factory calipers with 4 inch pads to ones with 5 inch pads. The rack and pinion on these gen 1 beasts leak like a Harley Davidson. Don't mess with the seals, put in a whole new unit. Trust me. That looks like a rear main seal to me, but I've never had a problem with mine. Had some top end leaks around the head gasket. Never the main seal. The 2002 trans isn't sealed, along with no smog blower. Watch out for the radiator leaking into the trans fluid. Aka "the pink milkshake of death". Lol.

Your driver side front tire is looking odd. Every other thread block looks different. Might be dirty, might be damp, but might be cupping. Let me know if I was right.

You need to determine if the leak is engine oil or transmission fluid. That will tell you if it's the rear main seal or the front pump seal leaking.

I’ve owned lots of Toyota vehicles and have constant issues with caliper sliding pins seizing. Any idea what lubricant you can use on these that will last?

I use AGS Sil-Glyde brake lubricant. BK-4... It doesn't mess with the rubber and puts up with high, high temperatures.

make sure those rubber boots aren't torn OR aren't seating flush on the pins due to rust jacking letting water get in.

My vote is that the leak could be a front main transmission seal.....

I have a 2006 Toyota tundra four wheel drive have had an issue with the rear drum type brakes , they seem to be not totally releasing when brake are applied during normal vehicle operation. Have had vehicle on lift and tried to replicate problem with vehicle in gear and applied brakes and let off but there is no noise of brakes not releasing when experiment was done on lift . Wheels all spin normal when vehicle is elevated and rear brakes have been adjusted so that one can hear and feel a slight drag from the brake shoes rubbing on the drums . Help please !!!

Rear main seal? Steering rack appears to be failing also. I've seen worse tranny fluids. Hopefully he gets some of those issues fixed. Wonder if the calipers are shot?

Do you recommend a flush or simple drain, clean the screen and refill of proper type and amount of fluid? Thank you!
Oh yeah! Could the oily pan be a loose pan bolt and/ or bad gasket
