We are rug weaving crazy at DIY on the House! I have been working to find a way to weave a round rug - and I finally figured it out! This was such a fun weaving project! The rag rug loom is cheap and you don't have to build it. This is a great way to make scrap fabric rugs.

These round rugs were originally woven using the old metal wagon wheel circle. It was wrapped with padding and fabric strips that you could pin your warp strips to
No kidding!! I didn't know that! Super cool!
You have the VERY BEST SOUND on your video.
Thank You !
You speak absolutely perfectly.
Wow, thank you!
I do not know why a weaving video came thru, but I am truly happy it did. I am crafty in so many ways. I sew quilts and dresses so of course I immediately have on hand supplies ready to make this. Will be doing this as soon as I get over this cold I have. Thank you
Wonderful! So glad it came through - I love sewing as well!!
The advices from your trial and error help us greatly. Thank you so much!
Thank you!! There are always errors when crafting!!
I have been doing my own experiments with circular weaving. Preparation is key. Your video was so thoughtful and thorough. You did the work and shared the analysis and lessons of circular weaving on a removable loom/loop so generously. 😊 thank you.
Thank you!! Circle crafts have always been tricky for me!! Glad you liked the video!
Oh my goodness! I am so impressed with your knowledge and creativity! Thank you for sharing this ingenious pattern and method. I'm looking forward to trying this!
You are so welcome! Let me know how it goes!!
What Glynda Giles said
So much patience you have, which I don’t have, love the rug, beautiful
Thank you!!
Great project & so well presented! Love how you laid out that base, v clever. And thanks for being willing to show the prototype! It’s a process 🙂
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! It was a really fun project!!
I love the weaved rug. I love the colors of it.
Thank you!!!
Thank you !!! You do such a fantastic job with showing the steps of your weaving projects!!! I just found your channel because I couldn't sleep! I have always wanted to weave and this is a process and project I can do. I always thought it would involve a very fancy and very ,very expensive loom, that I could maybe rent for a few weeks, at 1,000+$ per week, or something like that, along with all types of high cost yards c and fabrics & other items for creating a rug, etcetera. I am thrilled and so excited to start! I just hope whoever ( your husband?) that maked your handmade loom, the one you used to make the one with greens, white, yellow, some with blue, the square "rag rug" for your powder room. I hope my husband is going to be happy to spend his Sunday afternoon watching how to build it, then making me one! I have so many fabric scraps and I don't know if I can wait until morning to start ripping the strips!!!!🥳 I hope you continue making these videos. You have a gift for teaching your craft, as well as your great talent at it.
Be well and happy,
Audri
WOW - you truly just made my day with your sweet words! Thank you. I hope you get a loom built soon, it is such a fun craft! Thanks again!
This was really great. Thank you for all the information and complete demonstration!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the tutorial. Love the rug!

Absolutely LOVE this!!! I'm gonna try one...hope it comes out as nice as yours did.
You can do it!
So inspiring! Thanks for sharing!
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing. Especially when the to tight of weaving and the bowl looking. These are beautiful.
You are so welcome!
Great job I have that big hoop and have never used it. You cracked me up.. use a lid, a plate, a cap!!! That's exactly how I create things but for some reason these young kids need a specific "tool" for everything. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You are so welcome! I have read you other words of encouragement on the other videos, I think we need to be friends!! No chance you live in Arizona?! 😃 I truly appreciate your comments, I am having a ton of fun making the videos and trying new projects! Thanks again!
That's a beautiful rug, great job!
Glad you like it!
I really like the idea one look. Thank you for your time and patience to make the pattern.

Thanks for such a great video💕 You explained everything so very well.
You are so welcome!
That’s wonderful! Kudos to you!!!
Thanks! Appreciate it!
That's lovely!! Very well done!!
Thank you very much!
Your finished rug and the prototype are both gorgeous colors! I think on the one you finished, I would sew the edge like you did but then add a bias binding to make it look neat and tidy. It's such a nice rug I think it deserves it. Thanks, I hope I can try this sometime.
Thanks for the tip -- great suggestion!!
Great video and a beautiful rug, thank you.
Thank you! 😊
Hi the rug turned out great, thanks for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
Lovely rug and informative video, thank you
Your welcome
Super cool project 👏👌 look bit difficult, but feel like trying 😘😊 Thank you so much for the nice Video Namste. 🙏
My pleasure 😊
If you pull weft tight you can make really cool rag baskets
I can totally see that! My prototype was close to basket status!
Thank you so much again 😀. I have made three "normal" ragrugs already and surely gonna try this too. Br. Mia
Wonderful! Have fun!!
Que genial tu trabajo, gracias por compartir.
¡De nada!
Thank you so much for not being ashamed of talking about a good foundation :) in scripture. I really like your videos as well. Just getting into weaving.
You are so welcome! I am having a ton of fun weaving Christmas presents!! Enjoy your projects!
This is really nice. Might have to try it. I would crochet a circle in the middle and then also crochet around the outer edge.
Great idea! Let me know how your project goes!!
I was thinking the same thing... i'm thinking maybe make the joined strips like she has shown us and just crochet the whole darn thing! lol! I think they make a huge crochet hook I've seen at Michaels that could be used. It would be no-sew too. This is very beautiful though!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I have not made one but many years ago I saw one made using a hula hoop using old tshirts. I am sure yours will be beautiful. Your color choice is perfect.
I thought of a hula hoop, but couldn't figure out how to make it work. I will have to look that up!
Wow very pretty!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very nice
Thanksalot ,loved it.
Thank you!!
Woooow😍
I loved it 😍
Creative and unique 😍
Thanks a lot 😊
Thank You very much❣️
You’re welcome 😊
I like the bowl effect! Would make a purfect cat bed/ basket.
OOH, that would be a great use!!
Great project. I have that same sewing machine. I. Love mine.
Thank you!
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Very beautyful!
Thank you very much!
This is really pretty n can be customized to any area!
Thanks!!
Amazing
Thanks!!
So beautiful!!! I can do this I think :-) Thank you
Thank you!!! You can do it!
Do you sell these? Can we make one together please?
Love your videos!!! Thank you for sharing. Easy to follow. Just an idea for your prototype rug...how about making it a pillow or wall hanging or hanging lamp with long fabric sides?
Great idea! I saved it, because I love the colors. I will have to give that a try!
Thanks
INTERESTING
A fun, inventive project! Thank you. 💕
Glad you like it!
Beautiful 🙏
Thank you
I like that a lot , the prototype I could see as a cushion top for a wooden rocking chair or even just a cushion to throw on the floor
Oh, those are great ideas!!
@@DIYOnTheHouse ,
Opportunities instead of mistakes , right ? ☺️
Bello!!!
Love it
thanks...I like...
Thanks!
I have a huge iron rim off of an antique farm wagon wheel for a loom. I'm eager to try weaving doing this by your method! This is entirely different than any instructions I've ever seen. This actually looks much more do able!! Thank you. Blessings!
That sounds super cool!! Curious - how large is the rim? Let me know how it goes!!
@@DIYOnTheHouse the rim is 48" in diameter-BIG! In order to do it like you did, I'll need to make the base enough larger to be able to tie it to the rim. It's going to be interesting. Your weaving technique is 'twining' where all my patterns are 'simple' one strand weaving. So I'm eager to do this!! Bet this will use up a LOT of fabric scraps!! ☺ Thank you, I've subscribed to your channel & am totally excited about your videos.
@@merryanneadair4451 OHHHH I want to see pictures!! Keep me posted!
@@merryanneadair4451 we just got the old round frame that my Aunts and Uncles used to make rugs. I kinda remember them making 2 1/2” strips and rolling them into balls. I’ll ask my cousins for advice. It will be a great winter project!
@@daisyanddawn after my grandfather retired he built a 2 harness rug loom & wove rugs for anyone who would bring fabric, old clothes & rags to weave with. I grew up helping grandma & mom tear those strips, sew them, trim them then roll into big balls!! Great memories!! Have fun with your loom!! It's a family treasure!! God bless!!
You are so intelligent
Great tutorial thank you. I was wondering about pinning and tucking the edge like you did but, avoiding the sewing machine all together and using a strip of rag and the existing slits to do a simple whip stitch to complete the edge. Would love to know what you, or others, think.
Oh, that might work! If you try it, email me some pictures if you can to diyonthehouse@gmail.com
I can see for the center circle making a yo yo out of fabric with a cloth button at its middle in a contrasting color and using fusible webbing to iron it in place. Am saving this video am looking forward to trying this, thank you.
Never thought of that!! Let me know if you try it and how it works!
That was my first thought, too! A fabric yo-yo center!
Prototype is beautiful too. I would use it like a decor tray.
Could make a good bowl for toys too!!
Que lindo diseño 💞👏👍🌟✨🇵🇪😇😻
Thank you so yous full
Our pleasure!
Дорогой соратник (ЦА) по творчеству! "mj вы талантливо сделали . Поклон за дерзание в творчестве. Город Самара.
Your proto type would make a awesome top to a floor cushion.
Great idea! I should come up with something to make out of it -- it took FOREVER to make!
Love it! Beautiful colors! What was kind was the black fabric?
It was a poly/cotton blend.
Thanks for the tutorial you made it look easy enough for me to try
You’re welcome 😊
Wow that was a great tutorial! I might do a tiny version just to practice and make some coasters before I try the rug.
That is a great idea! Or even a hotpad -- I love it!

I made a template on cardboard with several circles of different measurements. This I use with every round rug or wall hanging, if I want to have a perfect center. Zjen I warp with thread. And in the end I add the backing.
Oh, I like that!!! What did you weave with? Fabric? Then you hand sewn the backing on? Sounds exciting!
On the prototype: lay it in the bathtub and soak it with water. Take it out and lay flat on a couple of towels to absorb with water that will catch the drip. Then after a few hours move it to a warm place -- possibly outside in the sun. once it is fairly dry which may take a day or two place a large piece of plastic/garbage bag on top and then----place some weights on it such as books. This may do the trick.
Oh my - that is a great idea! Thanks!
Olá... Eu estou conhecendo seu canal agora e estou gostando muito das coisas que você ensina. Mas eu não entendo nada do que você diz. Você poderia colocar legenda em português Brasil? Obrigada. 🇧🇷👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I've looked everywhere for a loop as big as yours, with no luck at all. Do you know how I could get one. I loved your round rug and really want to try one. Take care. Elaine. x
We have seen them at thrift stores - so maybe if you have stores in your area you can look there??
Thanks for the great video! Could you use a hula hoop to weave a round rug?
I thought about that - but was stuck on how you would remove it from the hoop. I guess you could cut the loop. Also didn't know how much they flex. If you try it, let me know.
I was wondering about using a hula hoop as well but, wondered if it would be too flexible. Some hula hoops have a small length of plastic as a joiner, (l have one l threaded a shower curtain on to use as a camping privacy screen). It may be possible to pull one apart, cut a segment out of one end, rejoin it and make a sort of diy embroidery hoop. That would make it more rigid but I'm not sure if it would be rigid enough.
Can you share where to purchase the square box type of loom,or if your husband could sell a PFD of the square loom box like the one you used to make the white green & yellow rug. Thank you for sharing us how to make this beautiful rug!keep up the great work. ♥️
Ross has made all of our looms - here is a playlist of the weaving projects bit.ly/weaving_playlist - I am very fortunate that Ross can make these, it feeds my obsession!!
I would suggest using a sunburst pattern for "embroidering" the center with a wool needle pulling more scrap lengths through to cover the hole in the center, the same needle and scrap fabric could be used to bind the outer edge, as well. Pony makes good plastic needles for this with huge flexible eyes.
That's a great idea! I love that!!
Please if allowed can I ask what are the materials of making rugs like what the name of the ruller you use the cloth cutter you use and everything thank you
Sure! Here are some of the supplies I use:
Lip Edge Ruler: amzn.to/2wHyIsH
Fiskars Rotary Cutter: amzn.to/3dxWlEw
Fishars Cutting Mat: amzn.to/2UlBBZ8
Have you thought about tacking a 'Yo-Yo' fabric circle in the middle? And is there a way the outside edge can be used to completely finish the rug? Since there is so much fabric at the edge, you might be able to loosely 'French Braid' or twine the finished edge to match the style of the rest of the rug weaving.
WOW - those are GREAT suggestions! Love it, I will need to try those on my next project. Thanks for sharing!
I have an old metal wagon wheel rim that I am weaving a rag rug on. It is 48 inches across
That sounds soooo cool!! I would love to see pictures - diyonthehouse@gmail.com
Lovely rug. I would finish the edge with a binding made from matching fabric and then try to find a way of filling in the centre. Maybe some more of the fabric used to weave the rug rather than seeing the backing. Just me and my OCD!
That is a great idea!! Fun project for sure!
🌿💕🌿💕🌿🌾🦋🌾💕🌾🦋💕👑👑👍🖐I love your Work absolutely amazing keep it up 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
check out Amish toothbrush rug, Amish Knot rug. Simplify!
You're timing is perfect - I have been practicing that knot on an oval rug!! Such a cool technique!
Do you take the backing off for washing ?
No, I leave it on. Wash on delicate and line dry.
Ooh. I have a huge hula hoop that will work.
Oh, I would love to see pictures! diyonthehouse@gmail.com
What if you pulled the black fabric in the hoop taught as a drum? Then you'll have a flatter warp and avoid the bowl effect.
I had a tough time keeping it tight - I thought the same thing, but the fabric would loosen as I worked with it.
on the one that curves up... add a handle and make a basket to let it hold your balls of material.
GREAT idea! Thanks!
Great effort. Nice product. I don't see why you shouldn't go ahead and work in some sort of star or rose pattern into the middle of it so it is not blank....? Could be done at the start or the end, No?
I played around with it, I was worried it would make it too weak in the center. If you try something different, let me know!!
Do you prewash the material before cutting strips?
Not on most of it. Most of it was an old sheet that had been washed plenty.
It also depends on the fabric. If you're using old sheets that have been washed in hot water it's probably not necessary, but curtains and clothing probably ought to be washed in hot water to ensure no further shrinkage will take place when washing the rug.
Maybe to finished an each a fabric crochet or another decorated enhansing?
That would be cool!
Can i use a stiff inner facing instead of a woven one?
Of Course!!
Have you ever taken the step to sew the raw edges of the strips under to make the rug have no raw edges? How do you think that may impact the rug?
I didn't try that - it should work, it would probably make it a one-sided rug is all. I may have to try it and see how it works.
That looks great but what happens when you wash it? I'm currently persuading, or maybe bullying😸, my husband to make me a rug loom with the metal rods at the sides based on yours but the width will be adjustable (to make it narrower if required) and have rollers sticking out of each end to make longer rugs. I'll let you know how it goes. I've asked various friends if they have unwanted clothes, sheets, curtains etc and everyone seems to have taken stuff to the Red Cross bins last week😿. Maybe I'll cut up my husband's trousers if he doesn't make my loom soon!!!!!
Cutting up his trousers might some good leverage in getting a loom made!! 😅 I haven't washed the round rug yet. Here is a video on me washing the other rugs, they turned out great! ua-cam.com/video/zCDsES-AVmo/v-deo.html
Be sure to pre-wash all fabric before cutting it up. A great place to find materials is a local thrift store. Check to see if they have any specials or half off days, or damaged-beyond-repair bins. Can't hurt to ask!
Where can I get that Big Ring
Joanns and Hobby Lobby - or check on Amazon amzn.to/3oi4HKm
An idea for the sample rug that curved up… turn it into an ottoman or pouf.
I like it!
I follow your tutorial and made a round rug. I did not use the sewing machine to sew the edge. I weave round the edge with strip of cloth😄
GREAT idea! If you want to email me a picture I would love to see it! diyonthehouse@gmail.com. I love that idea!
