Kerosene Heater Cleaning Wick Trick

  • Here's how you can clean the deposits off your wick.
    I was shutting off my heater the wrong way lately. I was using the emergency shut off to shut down the heater but that shuts off the fuel burn swiftly and the wick has no time to burn itself out and this causes the carbon deposits to form on the wick. I was supposed to pull out my dial and turn the wick down into the housing to gradually extinguish the flame.
    This heater is circa 1990's when it was bought and it is the same wick I've used as I have never had to change it. Don't use your emergency shut off lever unless it is an emergency folks! I have burned countless tanks of treated diesel in this heater and it still performs perfectly.

    Just picked up a 10000 btu Radiant Kerosene heater. Last winter, here in the Catskills, we had power outage after power outage and nearly froze to death. Almost impossible to get anyone to put in a wood stove or an electrician up here with the building boom that's going on, so, I'm hoping this will do the trick. Kerosene is almost 60 bucks for a 5 gallon container at the cheapest big box store - Tractor Supply. I haven't checked out the local NY gas stations yet. Thanks for this video.

      This unit should keep an insulated 300 sq ft area nice and warm. I am so sorry to here about your heating woes. The woodstove is the way to go for reliable heat. If you can manage to get some firewood by yourself or get some cheap, you will be toasty warm all winter. An american gallon here at Canadian Tire is $33.00 and tax. I'd love to find 5 gallons for $60.00. My main source of heat in my home is wood heat. I did a few videos on my Drolet HT3000. I just had a heat pump installed and it is working well. I am told it won't drive up the power bill much. We will se how it goes this winter. It also cools in summer so that is a bonus.

    i have my Dad old kero sun heater i bought him maybe 40 years ago i think i've only used it once it's been out in the garage but i cleaned it up - looks almost new but when i lit it the carbon build up made it smoke big time so i ordered a new wick. well they say a Arctic Blast is headed our way even though were in Georgia USA and the south so this may be my fix till a new one arrives great video .

      @@sailawaybob Yes, I think your wick is fine. Get rid of the stale kerosene and make sure the new wick is saturated with new fuel. Fill the tank once drained and cland and let the wick soak up th fuel for about 30 minutes. It may take a bit for the old kerosene and water to dissipate and it should clear up. Bring the nit outside.
      the only other option is to remove the old wick and clean it and let dry. I think option one is the way to go.

      @@Tobinindustrial Yes, Andy, we use kerosene heaters, I have an appreciation for the warm, silent heat, and love the soft, radiant glow the heaters provide. I grew up with kero heaters. I even have a few Aladdin kerosene heaters ( from the 20's I think ) pasted down from my grandmother. Our home is in the Blueridge Mountains at about 2500 feet, winters are long and cold, and the house's primary heat is propane, very, very expensive. We would only use propane in an extreme emergency. However, the kero heaters make home life very comfortable at a much, much lower operating cost than propane gas.

    Growing up paraffin heaters were very popular here. You have to remember when it came to heating homes the U.K. was a long way behind the USA no central heating and poverty. I wouldn’t have thought diesel is appropriate fuel for this type of heater as it contains a lubricant for an engine injector pump it will burn dirty and smelly. I would use a premium low sulphur paraffin oil. I like this type of old heater but I don’t think they are very safe. I’m also a massive fan of the California orchard heaters. Good video! Been wanting to try diesel in mine. So many different opinions about it online..some say even with the alcohol added it will ruin the wick or that you need a special one. Others that the diesel fumes are far worse than the kerosene. Do you have a special wick, and have you been burning the diesel fuel in it for a long time?

      I am suing the original wick in this unit. I don't use it every day but it has burned many, many tanks of diesel conditioned fuel without any issues.

    2 Tablespoons of 99% isopropyl to 2.5 gallons of diesel is that correct? Want to make sure I have right ratio. Doing anything I can to combat the ridiculous price of kerosene. Thanks a million in advance. I just purchased the same model heater at an auction I took it apart to clean it and not meaning to pulled emergency shut off lever out all the way. I was trying to figure out how it went back on! Thank God I came across this video because it showed me how to put it back in correctly! I was stumped, lol Thanks again btw

      I have come to find out that diesel fuel has different blends depending on what part of the world you are in. I have had limited success in this whole process. Figuring out what blends are out there is not easy to understand and how it effects the burn blend amounts.
      I am happy that the video was helpful to you. Based on my limited understanding of this process, I cannot be of any more assistance other than expressing my finding and my results. It appears other people have varying results and so there must be other variables that are not being considered here.

    Others have advised using pliers to crush any deposits at the end of the wick, then brushing or blowing. I've tried it. Part of regular maintenance.

    • @Tobinindustrial
      @Tobinindustrial  2 роки тому

      Yes, indeed. the carbon buildup prevents the natural wicking of the fuel. Removing the wick and soaking it in isopropyl alcohol and then letting it air dry will help too. removing any water from the wick or tank is a good idea too

      @Tobinindustrial  3 роки тому +5

      @@johnmisrahi9922 Yes, I did use both at one time. I ran some tests and determined that you can wean the additives down to about 2 tablespoons per 10 liters. That being said, I am pretty sure if you double that amount, you will see a slight increase in performance. I have seen where some folks are adding much more than I am but I am trying to be a economic as I can about it. In fact, I have found a cheap source of 99% isopropyl alcohol that I could use a 1/2 of a bottle per 10 liters while still having a big cost saving. I have not tried it but I am told that the stove will perform even better. I don't want to muddy up the quasi science of it all but I may try it one day by adding half a bottle of 99% isopropyl alcohol and see what happens. Keep me posted on your findings if you don't mind.

      The particles typically flick out of th chamber. The wick makes a prettyntight seal in the chamber. If you remove the wick, you can do a better job by gently beating the wick to free up the material and allow for better fuelk wicking. This procedure I did was just for light cleaning. If your wick is getting bad it needs to be beat at edge to ge back better capillery action, trimmed and adjusted a biut higher (unpinned) or replaced.
