  • In this video we'll be taking a look at how I clean my Dyna-Glo WK24BK 23,800 BTU Indoor Kerosene Convection Heater! Cleaning your kerosene heater at least once a year is very important as it limits the chance of a dangerous fire and it also lowers carbon monoxide emitting from the heater as well as black smoke and kerosene smell.

    When I burned off my wick the unit burned for like 3 to 5 hours. Outside in the uncovered porch area which was rather windy, and the burning of the wick sent carbon hot fluff which some parts landed on the top of the chimney. This was carbon black type of material of unburned slightly oily carbon. The heater was refilled with K-! kerosene mixed with 1 ounce of 100-99 percent USP grade isopropyl alcohol. This high grade alcohol is totally anhydrous and the best you can buy. This trick was taught to me by an old timer who swears by this additive mix with the kerosene. THis will keep the burn ultra clean.and literally odor free. This additive really works PERIOD !! My heater does not have any soot inside the chimney of the unit. This is just remarkable stuff.
    The simple green you use works super. I use it outside my house to keep bugs and all kind of thing to stay away from my home. Also when it rains the aluminum siding stays super clean without pressure washing the exterior. This cleaner is just remarkable, PERIOD !!!
    What I am wondering is if you would make a stainless steel mesh chimney in the shape of a cylindrical shape on top of the inner side to side catalytic converter mesh flame guide ?? This I think would increase the heat output and reduce the amount of kero used with this heater. What do you thind Sir ?? Nice video and good down to earth maintenance information Sir.
    Peace vf.

      Very interesting tip on the additive! Thank you for sharing that. I think you're on to something regarding the mesh chimney. It seems to me that I've seen one that somewhat resembles this design. It was maybe around 20 years ago. I don't know how it would work, but I have thought to myself several times that there has to be a better and more efficient way of keeping, directing and distributing the heat.

      HOW MUCH ISOPROPYL TO AMOUNT OF KERO? MY HEATER IS SUPPOSED TO HOLD 1.9 GALLONS... BUT I GET 2.5 TO 3 FILLS OUT OF MY 2 GALLON CONTAINER. DO I JUST ADD IT TO THAT? BUT: HOW MUCH? THANKS!

      First of all, you are not suppose to use any additive. I chose to use the additive to keep the smell down. I use crystal clear K-1 Kerosene !! NO RED DYE, PERIOD !! A new wick beginning of the season. Made in Japan or England. THE HELL WITH THE CHINAMAN JUNK !!!! This is part one !!!
      Have a Happy New Year and hopefully more to come for me and you too. Peace vf@@dianalynntritch1138

      @@HeritageAndHarvest I started following you after watching your first kerosene heater preparedness video, wonder if this one will have so many views 🤔 I went for a butane cabinet heater in the end, really hard to get kero heaters here now. Yep... Just collecting together my seeds... First year with a greenhouse myself so a whole new chapter in growing 👍

    Yup. I’m down here in south Texas. We didn’t get snow, but we had a cold snap that took temperatures down to the mid-20’s. Not a winter nightmare, but our gas furnace broke down so our forced air heat is out. Been relying on a fireplace and a few space heaters.
    Last year (Feb. 2021) we were without electricity for 4 days. Temperatures crashed down to 15 F. I read a total of 175 people in Texas died of hypothermia (some in their own beds).

      I'm so glad you all haven't had those same conditions this year! What happened last year is so sad. We're so accustom to systems and infrastructure reliance that most of us just don't know how to take care of ourselves, our families, and our neighbors.

    Kerosene at my local Tractor Supply is $50 for a 5 gallon container. Yea, No, I’ve been using diesel to keep a hoop house warm. $10 a gallon compared to $4.15 for diesel. Wicks aren’t that expensive.

    • @HeritageAndHarvest
      @HeritageAndHarvest  10 місяців тому

      I get it. Kerosene at the pump is much more affordable than in the jugs at the stores, but overall kerosene has gone up in price to the point that it might not be worth it for some or even most people. Like most things, it just depends.

    Do they turn black everytime you use it...mine did in 4 hours...brand new

    • @HeritageAndHarvest
      @HeritageAndHarvest  Рік тому +1

      No. It shouldn't. It's most likely that the wick was set either too high or too low. The adjustment nob on these units isn't really to turn the heat up or down, but to adjust the reveal of the wick to it's perfect setting. If the flame is fluttering or if there is black smoke, then the knob needs to be turned and the wick adjusted.

    Looked like a good vid to me, Heck there aint to wrong way to do stuff with these heaters. They are literally just a huge lantern. FIrst time i did a dry burn and the wick was clean again i just scratched my head like, "how the heck did that work?"

    • @HeritageAndHarvest
      @HeritageAndHarvest  Рік тому

      It works!

    • @Inflec
      @Inflec Рік тому +1

      It worked because dry burning the wick forces the carbon that has built up on the top to be burned away leaving the wick mostly clean. You can improve this technique by taking a plastic bristle brush (like a toothbrush) to the exposed part of the wick and brush away any remaining carbon. When finished the cleaned wick should feel like soft felt to the touch. That's when you know the wick is in prime condition.

    I seriously hope you all don't use a kerosene heater, we were using one in our old house and it caught on fire, scared us to death. I hope you all are doing well, Jacob misses Anna.

    • @HeritageAndHarvest
      @HeritageAndHarvest  2 роки тому +4

      Hi, Sarah! I hope you all are doing well also! We do use a kerosene heater. I use it in the workshop to take the edge off these cold Michigan winters and we'd definitely use it indoors if there were a power outage during the winter. I'd rather have a wood burning stove in the house, but this is what we have for now. I really am sorry that happened to your family. It's not unheard of for them to catch fire, but safety is the reason for this video. People are using these all the time and if they're going to use them I want them to use them in a safe manner.

    • @SarahEA1
      @SarahEA1 2 роки тому +2

      @@HeritageAndHarvest we would love to have wood stove too. Right now we use propane heater, it great for us it heats our whole house and when electricity goes out we have that, and we use space heaters to knock the chill off, those can be bad too.

    • @totallyfrozen
      @totallyfrozen 2 роки тому +8

      If a kerosene heater is properly maintained and used correctly, they are very safe. They are more efficient than propane or wood. Just requires a little time and attention.
