    About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on UA-cam videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

Thank you for your video! yours was the first I found when searching what to do with my fireside leftovers, I couldn't bear to throw them in the garbage. I am so addicted to this powder spice now, I put it on everything! And, for the record, you are right that it's better to put it on the meat or fish you're cooking rather than adding it as a dry, raw powder after the fact like you did with the tacos, lol.

I thought it would be a shame to throw those veggies out so bravo for saving them and turning them into a useful spice. I also thought that putting the spice in a sauce would be much better than sprinkling it over something. I said out loud when you did that, ‘are you crazy?!’

Ok... I just finished straining the cider. Out of a fully packed half gallon jar I ended up with two full pints of fire cider. I was happy with that until I realized I could take the leftover veggies and run them thru my masticating juicer!!! I got TWO MORE full pints of fire cider!!!! Since the leftover veggies have been reduced tremendously, the leftover pulp will be dehydrated and used as a spice. My next round of cider will be significantly larger and the resulting pulp will be made into supplements after dehydration.
So if you're dehydrating your veggies without running them thru a juicer, you're missing out on extra fire cider juice! In my case, had I not run my pulp thru the masticating juicer, it would have been two extra pints. Four to six weeks is a long time to wait for the next batch. May as well squeeze it to the last drop.

Jason, I chuckled a little bit not going to lie when you bit into that taco! Definitely agree with your surmise that it would have been better with the protein cooked with the mixture.. usually that will form a more harmonious bond between things. Kudos to you guys for celebrating your bounty that God has produced. What a blessing for everyone to witness and emulate.

Jason- I am in awe that you can drink that Fire Tonic and try all those strong spices.
I drink apple cider vinegar - mixed in with something else, and do some herbs and spices - but you take it to another level! Lol
But keep going brother .. I’m sure you are healthier for it.😀

  • @StrawFamilyFarm

Question - I kind of figured it wouldn't be very flavorful Due to it being used for fermentation. I thought that fermenting would take all the good stuff out of it (as in flavor or Nutrition) and leave it in the cider. Am I right in thinking that there probably isn't much left in after the process? I compost mine as I really didn't think it would have any properties left. I don't even know if I am making sense but I just don't understand what the ingredients would have left to offer after fermentation ... trying to wrap my head around the Why and if of it all
