Major Payne may be a hardened war veteran trying very hard to settle back into civilian life but one thing is certain: he has a heart and he cares about his cadets like they’re his own children. Seeing that smile on Alex’s face and him saying he wants to win that trophy showed that he realized he had a support system with Major Payne all along and that he was safe.

I dont think maj payne is necessarily being overly hard. Sure he's beating the kids into shape using his marine methods, but everything he was doing was to instill the same sense of camaraderie, teamwork and mateship that makes a marine unit the force it is. Its just that in this very moment he also was defending one of his own men who was under imminent threat which is something the kids had not yet seen from him. All they knew up to that point was "marine dude is hard work and rules". They all added "will stand between them and the fire" to the list of paynes attributes after that

He never had been a family man, the military was most of what he knew, he didn't know how to deal with kids. Yet, he never once harbored any ill will toward them, never wanted to see them hurt. Given what he was there for, he wanted them to be the best they could, he was just trying to go about it in the only way he knew how. Dad took her and our younger sister to the house, rolled up the paper into a tight baton and waited for the dog. It came charging at Dad and he smacked it across the face, causing it to run off yelping. My grandpa told him, "I'm tired of your crap." So the drunk wanted to fight him. "Let's take this outside!" He tells my grandpa. "Alright, let's go." Ron Pearlman is known for a lot of his well i would say not nice roles as both in human and creature make up. The best leaders are those that instill confidence in you to build you up both mentally and physically so you will know what to do if and when they are no longer there. They teach you how to lead your own life but also how to work as a team and lead others if called to do so. Everything is passed onwards, it is the cycle of life.
