Rambo did go psycho by blowing up a gas station, a general store and cutting loose with an M60, spraying rounds everywhere. Totally unnecessary if the goal was to get even with the Sheriff, especially given his skill set.

It is also a lesson that sometimes you don't know who you're dealing with, Rambo is one such example because the Sheriff didn't know he was a ex Green Beret and elite soldier in Vietnam

I really like the writing for Teasle, the battle between his pride and reality is realistically human... The dude and his deputies just got smoked and he thinks he can still win if he just quadruples down...
In some ways this movie was ahead of its time. When Rambo talks about being in charge of multi million dollar equipment and then coming back to civilian life that hit deep.
Also deep, having numerous college degrees, previously having a Top Secret clearance, retired from the military, half enlisted, half officer time, Marine Corps first, Army second, multiple MOS', numerous different jobs, Sergeant and later a Captain, 2 combat deployments, tons of awards, can't get an entry-level job, even when jobs have now hiring signs on the door? Nobody can give me a straight answer. Underqualified, overqualified, who knows. Life is funny...same people who won't hire me or date me probably have "support the troops" bumper stickers and huge American flags in front of their big houses. Life is strange...

@@scott.moresh7 Society kicked me to the curb, as far as normal work goes, back in '08 at 43 years old. Overqualified for things I was more than willing to do, but it was like they knew I didn't NEED them, and they didn't like not having that power over me. They wanted a young guy, with a wife, kids, a mortgage and a new car. They needed someone they could leverage. I figured if they don't need me, that trail goes both ways. I started doing my own thing with some of the skills I have. The military experience is a bonus for everything. As far as dating goes, I had given up on finding a worthy one when I literally darn near fell on her. You've just got to figure a way to stay in the game, but you get to pick your position on the team, now. Anything goes, and uncle Sam only needs to know what we tell him. Time to go on the offense, so to speak. Keep Moving, brother, you'll find what you are looking for. Life seems so much sweeter now, too. I am as free as I can be, in what passes for these united States of America, these days. HooooAaaaaahhhhh!!! It ain't over, 'til it's over. Good luck to you and yours!

Whether on purpose or not this film highlighted PTSD that service members come back from deployment with. I am grateful it came out and made PTSD more well-known.

What makes a good actor is they can make you hate them and turn around in another movie and make you like them. Dennehy was likeable when he played Bufford Pusser in "A Real American Hero".
The thing is, it's hard for me to hate him. He's actually the good cop, trying to do his job. Just his pride keep getting in the way.

Dennedhy is certainly an amazing actor, but the novel also does a good job of making him sympathetic
Growing up in the military I met guys like John Rambo, and I learned some survival skills from them. Some edible plants, making weapons from items I found, how to track, how to hide when I wanted to, and how to make a shelter.
Col. Troutman's line "God didn't make Rambo, I made him" sounds so much like some of the Special Forces commanders that I met. They ALL had one or two members that the commanders considered their own, almost like children.
My partner caught a guy like that off duty once in Baltimore back in the early 90's. He was shop lifting from a Best Buy and the clerk chased him out as my partner was coming in. He watched as the shoplifter hit the ground, did a leg sweep on the clerk, and then elbow struck him unconscious in less than a second. He followed the guy until he hid in a shed in a backyard. He was holding it shut and the homeless guy tried to open it and he pistol whipped him back into the shed. When the local police got there, and got him out, they asked how he got the bloody head wound, and my partner said, "I hit him with my pistol. If you had seen what he did to that clerk, you would have, too." He looked homeless, but my partner came back from court a few months later one day, and said his lawyer had presented his army record to the Judge, and he was Special Forces and had served in Vietnam. The judge would have cut him some slack, but it turned out he had severely injured the clerk in that quick takedown, and the judge ended up sentencing him to a few years in prison on a strong arm robbery charge.
Honestly they should teach some of these skills in school in the event society goes to shit

I was just thinking this while watching. Same style of making the enemy understand the sheer task of just going toe to toe with the hero

What is kind of funny about this is that Richard was just coming off a role of being a gay man and because he was still in that mind set the way he was talking about Rambo came off as TOO gay. He had to reset himself before he could give off the correct vibe.

It was in fact a great movie but many veterans have been treated like Rambo was, sad part about it is... It still happens to this day. To all the Vietnam Veterans out there, welcome home! To all veterans and service members past and present, Thank you for your service!
There was some old vet at the VA, in his late 60s, who got belligerent with the pharmacists because they didn't have a renewed prescription for his heart medication. He stomped off in frustration, but was stopped by four cops. They didn't like his language. He didn't immediately back down and got himself a room in the hospital. They beat the crap out of him.
Rambo is just a movie. If a vet really went off the rails like this, they'd track him down and kill him quick.
Worst thing is when veterans are treated like shit by other veterans
I know one veteran that was treated so poorly, he left and has never returned.

@mm4350 I definitely agree. I once saw a homeless Vietnam vet in the bus yelling at some Vietnamese passengers and telling them to go back to Vietnam. These people were elderly so they were scared. This was back in 2001 before the towers in NY got hit.
Honestly, I saw Rocky first. I didn't think Sly could pull this movie off...boy, was I wrong.

It’s honestly amazing how easily civilians look down at war veterans, as if they know exactly what it’s like on the battlefield.
It's not being a civilian that is the reason some people look down at war veterans, it's being a special kind of stupid is the reason they think the way they do.
I still can't believe that Richard Crenna was hired at the very last minute and read the script on the plane on his way to shooting
his performance is incredible, I always loved everything about Trautman

But Stallone said that he practically re-wrote the entire film to revolve around Trautman and his ending involved Trautman (after killing Rambo) driving away in an army truck wearing Rambo’s bandanna.

I like how they portrayed Captain Kern. Calm, reasonable, disgusted when he learns that Rambo was mistreated (and that his hostility might have an actual reason behind it). The way he immediately swiveled his head to give Teasle a glare and kept it even as Teasle rationalized things was great.

The nation was still pretty raw from Vietnam when this was made. The final scene of Rambo breaking down is so emotional and relatable. Like Rocky, this movie paces itself building itself up. Stallone made - or starred - in two of the best movies of all time. You can question his acting ability but man did he deliver here. How can you have a dry eye at the end? Props.
If anyone questions Stallone's acting ability then they've got a screw loose. He should've gotten an Oscar for Rambo's speech at the end.
I was in elementary school in the mid-late '70s. I remember the lunch ladies having POW/MIA stickers on their clipboards. Now 54, it kind of boggles my mind to think that guys only 13 or 14 years older than me could've served in 'Nam.

The Sheriff's motivation was to catch Rambo and railroad a conviction so the truth never came out that he was the law breaker and oversaw a corrupt local police force.

This reminds me of how they rushed Kris Kristofferson into Payback because the original script was deemed too extreme for average movie audiences. The cinematic version of that film is vastly inferior to the Director's Cut, IMO.

My Dad said the same thing when he saw this in the movie with my Mom lol. The movie crowd (the loud ones) even said "shoot him" when Rambo had Sheriff Teasle on the ground during the final scenes. They were really into it. Love Brian Dennehy. His performance in Cocoon was a more likeable character.
Great stand up line
Sadly, I relate to this because I was that guy, the one who came to town as a vet, and even though I came back to my home town after my service, things had changed, and I was looked down on for what I did for the Army, in a way, this is a true story of many of my vet friends, who came back to a changed world, or a different opinion of them because they came back a little different. You can't make a man a warrior, and expect him to still live in your world.... regardless of the politics, you can't blame the warrior for what he's seen, blame the politician for making him see it. The warriors protect you and keep you safe, never forget that.
Richard Crena did such an EXCELLENT portrayal in this film! He was perfect.

If you were born in 1980 I don't think you would have watched this move when it was released. Also, I assume by saying 'real-time' you mean you watched the movie before it was dubbed 'classic' because watching a movie in actual real-time doesn't really make sense.
Timeless movie, Rambo later on became an icon despite his troubled past.
Rambo is the prime example of "you asked for it, now deal with it"
the introduction of trautman in the tent is the best part, as well as the part where he says "a good supply of body bags."

I was Air Rescue in the U.S. Air Force during the last part of Vietnam, and I had to put up with the same shit after I was discharged. Stop telling people I was a vet after a while.

Rest in peace, Richard Crenna - your Colonel Sam Troutman is the kind of guy most real soldiers would want to be their Colonel.
The level of acting in that particular scene certainly elevated First Blood above most action/drama films.Sylvester Stallones minimal dialogue as John Rambo also carved out a memorable character with expressions & a sad eye look that made us care about the situations enthrusted at him. Still the best one of all the films.
After Trautman gave the sheriff and all of us Rambo's incredible backstory. The franchise turned into a bunch of cash grab sequels. First Blood was so well made
Doesnt that always happen, there arent many movies with sequels out there, that held the quality of the first film.

You also have to realize knowing the fact is seeing. Reporting after it happens is different. Its not unreliable just not always the case, first of all nobody in media knows what Rambo is capable of.
Gosh, the casting in this movie is fricking great. Everybody nailed their roles perfectly.
Teasle is such a great character, I love how he’s written. He’s oblivious to Rambo’s skill, but he’s tenacious, focussed, seasoned, and cares about the community and his team. It would’ve been easy to write him as a one note hick sheriff (which he is on first impressions) but he has nuance and Brian “Boitano” Dennehy plays him to perfection!

What a load of crap. Nowadays every teenager UA-cam comment on a popular (by no means 'good') Netflix original goes along the line of: "this scene is the best bla bla". While the scene isn't bad, it's not perfect either. The same goes for this one.

Outstanding movie detailing what our veterans had to deal with coming back from Vietnam and trying to reintegrate into society. I know an awful lot of veterans who were grateful for this movie

Yeah he spoofs his own role in Hot Shots. Also in the final scene Trautman looks like he’s about to break down along with Rambo but you can see that he’s restraining himself because he knows he has to maintain a professional relationship with Rambo. Good acting by Crenna and he doesn’t even say a word.
I remember watching Richard Crenna in the TV show "The Real McCoys" (1957 - 1962). He was a good actor even back then. Yes! I'm THAT old - Born 1950 LOL

To me Rambo was always the first film that documented the struggles of PTSD amongst soldiers coming back home
He was actually based on MOH recipient Audie Murphy a WWII veteran who was in the 3rd Infantry Division. Like Rambo he also had PTSD that was unchecked

They used this legendary line in the recent MK game. "God didn't make Rambo, Trautman did".
Second newest. Sly gave the voice and everybody in MK treats Rambo with wise wariness. Not enough as they still fight him.
The cop doesnt come off as the guy who is gonna listen to the "prisoner" when he is being abused by other cops when he himself witnessed exactly what went on in the basement of the police station
No he doesnt. Attitude reflects leadership. Thats why Galt was allowed to act the way he did. Deep down..well maybe not so deep down..Teasle was the same as galt.
He seem like a relatively ok guy with a big inferiority complex. I think had he witnessed how they were treating Rambo, he would have stepped in but the fact that he said it didn't matter how mistreated he was, he "broke the law" is understandable, but screams of an officer more interested in maintaining his own perceived power than actually diffusing a situation.
And the Sheriff started it all, and then falsely arrested Rambo for vagrency. He needed it all hushed up. If the Army had sent a lawyer up there Rambo would probably have been let go. If Mitch testified, some officers would have been disciplined. But it is unlikely Teasel would ever feel the real consequences.
In the movie, when it was all over, I wonder if the town would re-elect Teadel?

This movie represents a golden era for movies, just a great time for them. The simple stories & scenes packed with intense dialogue, masterfully delivered. So many movies from this era were just like this and were amazing to watch. The crap Hollywood puts out now can't hold a candle to stuff like this scene.
Chinatown, The Godfather films, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Detail, Dog Day Afternoon and quite a few more....all made around then. Many were produced by the same guy....Richard Evans, until the cocaine caught up with him.....

Such an epic, timeless movie. Stallone is terribly underrated as an actor even today.
When you see even good amateurs try to make films, you realize just how good almost every Hollywood actor is. They are almost all very believable the great majority of the time. It's not as easy as it looks. I had the lead role in a made for tv film when I was 22..just out of college. We filmed for 9 weeks one year, then 6 the next...a great experience....

No. Where Stallone is underrated is as a writer. Stallone has created some magnificent characters and story lines during his career as a writer. He should have been nominated for writing this.
You can thank author David Morrell for writing First Blood and creating this great character and story. And you should read all of his books. He's a hell of a writer.
David Morrell’s novel was actually different from the final film and Rambo was actually a much darker character. In the climax of the novel he pretty much goes on a rampage and kills cops and civilians in the town. It wasn’t until Sylvester Stallone was hired that the film was reworked for Rambo to be more sympathetic.
@@tylertilwick6852 He was messed up. And he didn't get the help he needed. And the government had created him into a particular sort of entity and didn't have a plan to undo that creation. I think Morrell's character was sympathetic and possibly more realistic. In the end, Trautman blew his head off to end the rampage. He didn't want to, but he knew Rambo had went too far and couldn't be allowed to roam again.
rambo didn't survive. trautman blew rambo's brains out in the book.

First Blood is definitely a tragedy first and an action story second. Though the movie was altered I still feel the shades of the author's original intent.
It really is tragic that John Rambo had to go through all this just to get something to eat.

In the book Teasle is a Korean War veteran that felt his combat experience was a match for Rambo. Teasle is actually rather jealous in that Vietnam was highly publicized while he had his 'forgotten war' and had a chip on his shoulder because of it. His pride pretty much leveled the town he was sworn to protect.
I do love Captain Kern's "ASSHOLES!" and lead melting stare at Teasle's lame excuse for Rambo being mistreated. More than likely Captain Kern is a Vietnam veteran himself and is rightfully disgusted some backwoods deputies went on a power trip abusing a fellow veteran.
The body bag line gets me every time. Badass

That line gets me fuming, they only survived because of Rambo’s mercy.

Yep and that's how Hollywood rolls, makes cops out to be bad people, go read the book by David Morrell. In the book Teasle was the good guy and Rambo was the bad guy who was in bad psycho trip and had left/runway from a government hospital and Troutman wasn;t there to save him, he was there to kill him "By any means necessary and with Extreme Prejudice" which he did, he ambushed him and blew his head off after Rambo killed the killed Teasle, Morrell was mad as hell when he watched the movie and considered suing the Movie company because they turned everything sides from the book.
Everything about this movie is perfect. Even down to the reporter and his intro to to the report. "In this rugged terrain, possibly above the snow line, shrouded in mist... somewhere the fugitive John Rambo is hiding".
I don't quite get the snow line comment. The scene takes place in a camp with snow nearby. They are already above the snow line.
Brian Dennehy was perfect in every role he played. He is the bad, bigoted man we all love to hate but although I never had the pleasure of meeting him I can bet he was or could be the kindest and most gentle uncle a kid could ever meet.
It turns out that the Sheriff played beautifully by Denney was a disgruntled Korean Veteran! The Korean War did happen and many men lost their lives,PTSD and lifelong injuries. There was a draft .some volunteered. Hats off to this great movie, writers, director, producer & ALL the actors did a great job
In the background in his office you can see he earned the Purple Heart , Silver Star & Distinguished Service Cross .
which just goes to show how other vets saw the guys returning from Vietnam, my dad told me storied about getting spit on my other vets because they didn't see Vietnam as a real war and blamed the solders for losing.
To Korea vets, at Vietnam vets were acknowledged.
In real life, Brian Dennehy was in the Marines before he got into acting.

This is the reason why Col. Trautman is awesome. Although we never really got to see Rambo at his absolute best until the second movie, Trautman's words made you realize just how badass Rambo is. And even in the first and second sequel Trautman delivered the most memorable lines such as part II's "Oh you're the one who's making the mistake. Rambo." and Rambo III's "No. God would have mercy. He won't." and even if by some chance you've missed the previous films Trautman's warnings are good at reminding the audience you just don't mess with a guy like Rambo. RIP Richard Crenna.
So glad Kirk Douglas - originally cast as Col Samuel Trautman - parted company and Richard Crenna replaced him instead because his portrayal inadvertently adds humor (with touches of sarcasm), rumours that James Brolin was going to replace him in "Rambo" (2007), glad it never happened as Colonel Samuel Trautman died on 17th January 2003 - same day as Richard Crenna who played him.

I played tennis with a guys whose t partner co- starred with him in a certain show, and she complained to my friend about the alcohol she could always smell on Brian. Maybe that's why he was not a big star. But I think people in the business knew he was a top talent. He didn't really get well-known until middle age...hard to become a star then.
