The Reason Sean Strickland Spars So Hard

  • Sean Strickland knocked out a sparring partner in a recent viral video. I reviewed lots of sparring rounds of his including him sparring 3 on 1 and I think I understand why he is the way he is.

      The intensitiy depends on people. Even if you give advise to sparr technical (we do 2 min rounds) it gets harder and harder depending on people. In my opinion it depends also on the guys weights. My buddys and me (heavy weight) do much lighter than middle weight guys. I think thats because of heavy weight ones do knock out and others don`t

    The margin between what is considered light sparring and hard sparring thins the more you go up in skill level and career. I spent a lot of time as a paid sparring partner for pro boxers and mma guys. When your get used to defending from better and better guys you can take more casually. A great example of what looks hard but is fairly safe and light is the SIAM boxing guys. It looks super intense but they are doing a lot of little things to keep their partner safe while pushing the intensity.

    I think the biggest problem that people have is that Strickland posted this video on his personal Instagram, and seemed to take pride in the fact that he ko'd someone who is supposed to be his teammate and partner. He's never ever given off a vibe even remotely similar to that of a likeable, sane, and grounded person and that's why people (myself included), totally dislike the guy. He's overly proud of his violent tendencies and seems to give off the vibe of someone that will, at some point down the line, hurt someone outside the cage and/or kill them.

    This is a kind of conditioning we did a lot in Kyokushin, particularly for someone who was going to compete in a tournament or take a test. Since both were likely to involve back-to-back fights against a series of opponents, we'd simulate that in class by having the person fight a series of rounds with only seconds between them, cycling out their opponent with a series of fresh(er) ones.
    I have vivid memories of, in a test, getting exhausted to the point I couldn't do much about defending body shots, getting hit hard enough to fall to my knees, and being pushed to immediately stand back up and finish the round strong. And that's the crux of it: like with Sean, we weren't trying to permanently injure or KO each other in these situations. We were building a response to exhaustion and testing the limits of that in one another.
    It made particular sense in a competition format like Kyokushin, where a dominant performance can get you a decision victory after a single round, encouraging high-intensity from the get-go.

    • @Walletau
      @Walletau 2 роки тому +1

      Honestly different schools have different beliefs as far as head gear...I never wore it, because I do believe it encourages harder striking and further distances from what fight would be. I know Wonder Boy and others are big on it, but not everyone

    • @jayportland
      @jayportland 2 роки тому +1

      I wear my head gear when I spar all the time. I never go into it without it. Even when I spar in the kids classes. For me, it’s about mitigating nose bleeds only. I still get them but I get them less frequently which allows me to spend more time sparring instead of cleaning myself up and cleaning up the mats.
      But I don’t have a definitive response about the concussive mitigation. I have used a lot of different headgear and right now the Hyabusa is my favorite. It’s a little bit softer than most headgear so it absorbs impact a little more, but I agree with the comment about opponents getting encouraged to go slightly harder.
      I keep going back and forth on its efficacy but I know that for my nose bleeds, there is nothing better.

    Good vid. I agree that the roundhouse kick did not look all that hard; the other guy also did look exhausted and wasn’t keeping his hands up. At the same time, I would not say that just because we have video of Strickland sparring at different levels at different times shows that he is *always* in control of himself. It just shows that he is capable of controlling himself at least some of the time. If we had video of him remaining in control even when he felt really provoked, that would be more persuasive.
    In other words, it’s easy to be playful/go light/stay calibrated when you’re calm. The real test is whether you can do so when you’ve been provoked or when you’re angry or pissed off.

    Sean's definitely a bully and has made several statements about getting enjoyment from "beating on nerds in the gym".. He'll beat on weaker less experienced training partners because "it's good for them" but whines when a BJJ guy shows him why you don't make a certain mistake even though "it's good for him".

    I guess I can also explain my background, I have trained and been ranked (which I think doesn’t really matter) by professor Remy Presas, Wally Jay, Rick Ward, Norman Pedelahore, and many others, including my extensive training in in wrestling, etc etc, I love the things that I have learned from all of them and have always rejected the false knowledge and claims that are being monetized, that will continue to be my journey on this particular plane of existence.

    sure harder sparring is beneficial for fighters, but more than less sparring footage ive seen on sean strickland is him going ham, and it seems like his whole gym is this way so its not really his fault. He also has a mentality of not losing in sparring, which prompts him to go harder

    I disagree completely, dropped in at Jackson Winks and I sparred with a partner who said they wanted to specifically drill body shots and they kicked me In the head which knocked me out and left me with a TBI and it WAS NOT hard at all. The leg is just a big, heavy limb and if you swing it at someone's head with no control (he had no control with that kick) you can seriously hurt your partner

    I was rocked by a fairly light head kick once, just didn't see it coming and had a flash of light, my legs wobbled, got a headache etc...But we were ggoing 30%, just a very good setup from my partner who felt very bad about that afterward. ^^

    I tend to agree with you on this….except for your initial “either….or…” claim. There are many experienced (but non-cognitive/understanding) and knowledgeable (but non-practical haha) fighters/athletes who cannot assess film and/or teach. Like the 4.4/40 dad I knew, who only told his sons to run faster to run faster.

    And yeah Sean said Jiu Jitsu wasn’t his sport but additional context that you won’t sho for some reason shows that he was talking shit to Orlando saying he would beat his ass and a black belt in Jiu Jitsu doesn’t mean shit. Again you won’t add that context for whatever reason so yeah have fun with that lol.

      @@hard2hurt if it were training I’d agree. If Orlando turned his hips, I’d agree.
      It seemed more like a misunderstanding from Sean and Orlando. Sean often talks sheet dishonestly; many of us do that. Orlando didn’t know him. Sean was a visitor. He was caught with a no hipped torque against a lazy extraction of a weak underhook. It’s a check often used in Greco.

    As with most things in life, communication is so important. I went into a light sparring with the understanding that the rules were traditional karate tournament rules where someone calls point and you reset. They randomly decided to not do that and not tell me and just kept going, perhaps part of the test or it was just a mistake/misunderstanding and it was fine they took it super easy on me but I was confused. Communication beforehand is important SUPER important if at least one party decides to go hard.

    • @JoshAllenberg
      @JoshAllenberg 2 роки тому

      Same thing happened when I sparred with certain people, including my coach. I'll match the intensity of my partner. If they want to go hard, I'll go hard. But then they get mad at me for hitting them hard. Little do they know that even when I spar hard, I'm not using 70% of the tricks I would in a real fight. So even if they're getting hit hard, I'm still taking it easy on them.

    That kick was not as light and flimsy as you are trying to lead us to believe. He didn't "sling" that kick lightly as a front kick. It was a switch kick roundhouse with the hip turning into it. It wasn't fully turned simply because his kicking technique is a bit sloppy. He's better with his hands.
