    This is gold. Thank you. Once one understands lines of force the feet [and knee placement] of the opponent is more indicative of timing than the hands. At high levels it does not matter because we "anticipate" and "preempt" the energy of our opponent allowing us to close and finish in one quick movement.
    I've never heard Chu Shong Tin speak on these truths before but it doesn't surprise me because it is immediately evident he is tapping into the "idea" of Wing Chun. Amazing and insightful.
    Thank you.

      Cheers David. Actually there is a lot of footage of him talking about fighting but I just gotta get around to translating them cause they were taken at his house and he's obviously talking in Chinese.

      You can't. You can watch many of the Wing chun fights against muay thai, kick boxing, or BJJ. The moment you try to move in, you will get caught and either be KOed or taken down. Use the usual Wing chun footwork, but multiply it by 10 in terms of speed. Attack the blind side of the opponent and don't attack from the front cause the Wing chun stance will not have any advantage against the boxing stance in term of your reach.

    Amazing speech from CST Sifu, what he said at the end was so true and most of WC guys might not reach at that high level of WC.

    Master Chu Shong Tin gave awesome knowledge for fighting. What a true master! I wonder if he gave tips as well on how to handle takedowns and etc.

      He didn't share too much on that to be honest. hence why all the instructors at our school do grappling at MMA and BJJ schools just to get a feel for how to apply our method in those situations.

    it is good tactics, but it depends which opponent is more faster, efficient, fluid and flowing well and accurate. against counter puncher with good side or back step is quite hard to deal with also unless you have good defense while attacking.

      Yes, this is the theory and philosophy but to put into action involves many variables. Hence live practice and pressure testing is very important :)

    It looks like he's mimicking praying mantis when he speaks of missed opportunities. My sifu kinda pokes fun at praying mantis...if I am even right, is this common for wing Chun instruction? To use praying mantis as an example?

      Yes, Master Chu was the one of the most respected Wing CHun teachers ever and had many challenge fights in his time in the 50s and 60s in Hong Kong, as did Wong Shun Leung.

    That wouldn't work. Don't close the distance unless you have an advantage, like when your opponent commits a mistake. By looking at the enemy's stance and footwork, you will know exactly how the enemy will move. If you seriously can't wait to attack, move quickly to the blind side. Don't stand like a boxer. Stand like a Wing chun guy.

    • @MindfulWingChun
      @MindfulWingChun  2 роки тому

      Not sure which part of the video you're referring too? You definitely wouldn't rush in. That's not what he is meaning. You would only go forward when you are in your perfect range. In his own challenge fights in Hong Kong, he said he would slowly creep forward until he was in range for a very fast step and palm strike and that's what he did.
      Timing, Balance and connection to the opponent is a must.

    The only reason yip man was so highly regarded is that Kung fu is largely a big steaming pile of shit. So, by comparison, a style that is even half-way functional seems extraordinary. By the standards of today's fighters and far more practical combat styles, none of these guys would stand a chance. CST in his prime wouldn't stand a chance against even an average mma fighter today. None of them would. The Thais proved this, again and again, when Chinese fighters kept returning to have their asses handed to them. Traditional kung fu is little more than antiquated legacy of cultural mediocrity.

      Nope. It depends on how you apply the Wing Chun forms. You will see me applying exactly the same forms very differently. I simply don't fight like them. And I don't practice chi sau, but I use a lot of laap sau moves. Many boxers have very good footwork, so unless you can catch up with them using even better footwork, you will never be able to close the distance. Cham Kiu means "searching for a bridge" which means finding your way to close the distance and make contact with your opponent. So, I don't walk around like them. I use some kind of badminton footwork that allows me to mimic Cham Kiu moves but at 10x the speed attacking the blind side, not the front of the opponent. And Chi sau becomes totally useless if you can't close the distance anyway. Chu Sheong Tin is very good at manipulating and positioning of the joints of his body. I learned a lot from his videos a couple of years ago. I bet most of his disciples do not understand what he meant cause even Chu couldn't explain himself very clearly. But he is not a real fighter. To be a real fighter, you need to understand not just Wing Chung but all other Martial Arts. Then you can apply the Wing chun forms to deal with other Martial Arts. Wing chun is very efficient, just like boxing, where you have only a couple of moves. The only question is how you apply the moves. Different boxers box very differently. That's the beauty of Wing chun too. LOL
